It might be a reality after all.

Respected entertainment news source The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that several new machines will be unveiled at this year's E3 Expo in Los Angeles in May.

According to a report, Microsoft is planning to announce the Xbox (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) Version 1.5, an enhanced console (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) with video-storage support. It also says that a PlayStation 2 (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) recorder linked to TiVo technology may be unveiled.

Furthermore, THR claims that a portable version of Nintendo's (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) GameCube (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) will be shown. "A portable GameCube device would bring next-generation graphics to the portable market - a market dominated by Nintendo with no competition from Sony or Microsoft."

Xbox 2 and a GameCube successor have been confirmed by their respective manufacturers for some time now. Even Sony has spoken, albeit in riddled tongues, about what might make up the PlayStation (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=4172&ngb2=oxy&ngb2=oxy#) 3. Something about spaceship technology and a thousand supercomputers delivered in a machine smaller than a Chewit.

Well Nintendo is supposedly working on ANOTHER portable system, aren't they? (this time, one that is actually powerful enough to compete with the PSP, as oppposed to the lame-duck DS)

If they made it GameCube compatible, that would be a VERY smart thing... but knowing how these companies work, you know it wouldn't be able to read GC discs and instead would require you to buy all new games. From a technical perspective, I really don't see any reason thay they couldn't actually built a portable system that was GC compatible - all the GC's chips should be able to be trasnfered to a portable system fairly easily.

If they make it so that it can play ALL Gameboy games going all the way back to Mario land PLUS Gamecube games (one slot for cartridge and one for discs). Plus mini DVD movies/mp3s? WOW!

I'd buy it over a PSP.

ya if they can get full out backwards compatibility as in (like you said)

gb
gba
ds
gc
+
minidisc support (movies/mp3/etc)
+
perhaps built in ecard reader? :D

anyways ya that would be some clever stuff and would sell insanely well I think.

But you also have to remember that giving 2 more portables into the market, plus the 3 big-gen consoles is going to seriously confuse consumers..

so by 2006 the line up could be

PS3
PSP

XBOX360
XBOXportable?

Revolution
DS
GBnext
GCportable?

Honestly.. thats pretty crazy..

God, I have never thought about that until now, but ya that is 8 consoles… that’s way too many systems to by. I guess that it will become more and more common for people to just (unfortunately) choose a side and stick with it…
EX: The Xbox people will stick with Microsoft products, the Sony people will stick with the Sony products… ect…

yup too true, I know for myself I'm sticking with sony :D

I got the PS1, PS2, and next I will get the PS3 :) (still dont know bout the psp yet though)

the only bad thing is, when the ps3 comes out I just may wait till the second or third line of them ship, because both my ps1 and ps2 went to hell, ps1 with the spinner broken, and ps2 with the dre's :D

yep, I am a Microsoft man myself, but I have played the PSP (with ridge racers) and I have to say that it is a fairly good device, and don’t get me started on the screen... Its gorgeous!

But I have not yet decide if I am going to make the plunge and buy it... With so many recent rumors about a handheld portable from Microsoft, I will most likely just wait.

Look at how many people are really interested in this idea! But I guess that means that Nintendo will never make it then. We all know that Nintendo seems to NOT do the things that seem most logical and wanted:sad: Maybe we'll get lucky this time.....i'm not really holding my breath, i've held my breath too many times for the big N and been disapointed

I think Nintendo is started to listen to its consumer base. I'm betting on it making a big comeback.

But you know to be honest what I would like to see is some kind of black market system that plays them all.

Anyone got a link for that? :D

Heh. Too bad it's old, the timing's good. Nintendo's talking about making the successor to the Game Boy. The media for the GameCube sure lends itself to it.

I figure now is as good as time as any to spread a rumor I heard. A couple of weeks ago somebody on Slashdot was babbling about how he was close to somebody working on it, and he kept saying the Revolution is a portable Game Cube. Though I think that's pretty much ridiculous at this point, the idea of the next Game Boy being a portable Game Cube isn't too much out of the realm of reality.

I would normally have given this a "yeah, right", but now that the PSP is out...

^^ Well in terms of engineering, making the GC portable is really not that crazy of an idea... and like you mentioned, the GC's media is very convenient for a portable format. (anyone know how big the GC discs are? 3 inches?) Also the processing power could probably fairly "easily" be turned from the home unit to a small portable unit. And I think there would be a very large demand for such a unit, espesially since it would already have a decent sized game library from day one - hell, even I would consider buying one.

I think the biggest issue would be Nintendo itself. Not sure if they are the type of company that would do something like that.
