I would be a better artist if I actually had time to create. Allow me to explain:
Currently I'm working on an animation for a major toy company (that's all the NDA will allow).http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Instead of giving us the time to actually spend the time modeling and all that pre-production stuff, they started the production late, but they didnt extend the final deadline. Naturally, they made severe changes which ended up in us starting the animation late. They want fast and cheap. It's obvious that you can have that, except you sacrifice quality. So we (me and the team of 7 others), are doing 44 minutes of animation in about 3.5 months.
I'll be honest. It's nothing that I would put on my demo (at least, not without extensive polishing), but it's not the worst animation either. It's basically just over a first pass animation. I really like the job and they allow us to be creative with it, but they didnt play it safe with about 4 primary characters and 5+ secondary characters. So it's pretty tight. We do, on average, about 6-15 seconds of "final" (term used loosely) animation a day.
Having said that...
Again, I really enjoy what I do, and I'm really happy that I get to animate everyday, but it's really hard to go home and work on your own stuff that you're trying to impress other companies with, when all you do during the week basically is "Rig Wiggle"... (I coined that phrase... Copyright me.)
So I ask... Is anyone else in this position? It's not bad by any means. It's just difficult coming up with the extra time to create your own stuff and create it well. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to whatever. I'm basically trying to spark discussion on how other people deal with their own animation. I hope this doesnt come across as complaining or whining, because it's not. It's just illustrating my original thought. Because animation takes time, and it really pays off when you have something that you can be proud of... About 90% of what my portfolio contains is college or post-college work. I have learned since then, I'm trying to apply to some new work... But you'll have that.http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
So, I go back to my original sentence. I would be a better artist/animator if I had more time to create... Animation rules, by the way.http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/bouncy.gif http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

hi,
this section is for Finished animation pieces - your post would probably be more appropriate in the General discussion forum

I am in this position. I just recently discovered 3D animation as a possilbility on my computer. I found Blender. I know it's not top of the line or state of the art, but its got me. I'm hooked. I can't stop thinking of everything I want to animate. It's like having your own movie studio on your PC. You are the director, the actor, the animator. The possiblities are endless, your imagination is the limit.
However, I am stuck. I hold down three jobs. The free time I do have I spend with my girl. I spare maybe a few hours a week to materialize my thoughts.
Another strike against me is that I'm a late bloomer. I just discovered the awesome power that is computer animation. You my friend animate everyday, get paid to animate everyday, and went to school to learn how to animate everyday.
That should inspire you enough to create and work on your own creations. And let us not forget the many who would kill to be in your shoes.
I feel your pain. Your stuck creating other people's shit. It sucks. I work at Wal-Mart for Christ sake. Not only do I create others people shit, I put up with it, market it, and sell it.
I would be a better artist if I had time to create. Wouldn't we all. Make time. So now, pull your head out of your ass and start animating some awesome shit for me to look at and get inspired by. :)
P.S. I've been without sleep for two days.
