Nice to see you back in the cgtalk forums, Supernekosan! (super cat person?)
Always enjoy looking at your modeling, I learn quite a bit.
Only crit I have is the chest is a little narrow and small but it does match your concept though.

because that is awsome!! and there is not much to say against it??
the only thing is that orcs are not very advanced, so you might consider making the straps that hang down leather instead of metal.... just a suggestion.
can't wait for the rest of the Orc.

yeah, the pec is looking better. It's definately more defined. You did a nice job on the smoothing groups. Maybe a wire post would be nice. Good luck!
Also, I think the armpit area needs to receed in more, it's a little too thick.

OOOooh!!! nice!!
I like the progress that you have made... he looks really mean!
Are you going to model a weapon for him? like a double sided battle axe?
Anyway for the crits.
His back muscles look really good except for the muscle that wraps around to the front from the side [look up the Mr. Olympia contest, they have really good pics of muscles]
The middle of his back has too big of a dip in it :)
Love the nose!!

Heyya. Lookin pretty cool. I just started fooling around with zbrush as well and its pretty neat. Lately I've been hearing so much talk about normal maps. I've been wondering what are they exactly and how do they work. Any idea where I can read more about it or is there a simple explanation?

sorry Mrdes the normal map seem just a litle to hard to explaine with my level of english!! but in short it can make your low rez look like a hi rez!!...ouep!! its doing almost the same as bump map...but whit another feture...it add angle...so the light can work more efficiently with the model and creat a beter illusion!!well actualy to paint a bump map its only white and blak(grayscale)...but a normal is more like light blu..is neutral..red is from top.....ho men i dont remamber...gota rechek evriting!!sorry i dont tink i ame de best persone to explaine it to you!!!lol!!but i did undertand it!!...sorry!!!

That's cool. I like the shapes and forms you are going with. Just make sure you do some color seperation or make the head a different hue of green than body. Personally, I would go with a light pink on areas of his head, seeing he's a pig and all. A good test is too view your character from a distance. I like characters that have distinctive colors that separate head, body, arms, etc. Sometimes, I get lost in the details, but it can become too much, you know what I mean? You can place warm colors in areas you want to pop forward and cool ones you want to pull back.
Glad you think texturing is the best part. I wish I thought so too, but it's very demanding of me. I struggle with color which is why I work in greyscale, although it often doesn't yeild the same results as painting well with color right away.

I like number 2. Perhaps blend more past his neck. Don't forget to paint in some really dark areas to really get some depth in it.
Looks great. Really like how you paint. Kinda sloppy, but it's a style.

It's not so bad to start with diffuse map, it's just that it'll give you a different look. I'm not really to into normal mapping, however, you can use Zbrush to give you more acurate shadows in your color/diffuse map which I am researching now. :) The cool thing about Zspheres is once you get the hang of the strange Zbrush interface, it's pretty easy to model. Still getting used to it myself. It's weird, but fun :) This is my first attempt (http://www.rodbrett.com/Snap1.jpg).
Model looks good so far, but where are his clothes? Will he be naked? Would really like to know about how you paint the textures, in particular, what brushes you use to smudge the initial shading. It's really nice.
Hey dpizzle: Supernekosan uses this method of modeling that's very similar to one of my teachers. It's the "edge extrude" method that saves lots of time if you are really good at it. You basically "pull out" the profile of the model instead of "cutting up" a box/cylinder. Because max doesn't really have a "split poly" tool with a whole lot of control other than "connect edges" (at least not that I know of), this may be an easier method to model, although it's difficult for me cause you can't block out the whole thing. :)

Looking nice and clean. The lightmap is nice. I especially like the inner reflected cool light on the brow. Depending on how much detail you are going to sculpt, you may still have to do some handpainting, although if you're going with the normal map, you won't have to paint too many faked shadows, if any. Zbrush isn't all that hard once you get your head around the interface. If you decide to use it, you can get some really excellent skin effects with the sculpting tools and projection master. I've been practicing it all month. There's a practicle guide that is really helpful right here:
http://206.145.80.239/zbc/showthread.php?t=3471 (http://206.145.80.239/zbc/showthread.php?t=3471)
You have to register to download it but registration is free, similar to cgtalk.
Good luck. I admire your persistence. To do the entire texture map again from scratch takes a lot. :)

Hey Super,
He's looking good. Nice back / lower back, and a great butt! (My girlfriend wants to know what I'm looking at... it's a model... really...) I think his upper arms could do with some more definition between the bicepts and tricepts, and that his abs could do with some detailing. The abs you'll probably get through texturing, but I think you'll need to look at the geometry in the upper arms. Can you post a wire?
Great to see an orc that doesn't look like evry other freakin' orc. Peter Jackson has a lot to answer for...
Keep it coming

BTW: That really is a very nice butt ;)

Ok , so i ended up changing idea, once again , I won't do a hi resolution version for the normal map in max , but in z brush , cause its faster and the result seems to be better . So here is a test , to start , the hi resolution for what i did so far ,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/supernekosan/hirez.jpg
and the low res , to which i added a mesh smoot to 1 for a better quality
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/supernekosan/normtonorm.jpg
+ a test of normal map on the original mesh 3000 tri with normal map.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/supernekosan/lowpolynosmoot.jpg
With all that , i came to realise that it was useless to model all the muscles,
cause it would complicate things to make a high res and harder to put the normal map on the model , without seeing the defaults. Next time ,
I will model less , to park the shadow and finish with the normal map

i dont understand why you are doing both the old style of texturing with extremely dark shadowing and a nomral map ? .. the normal map means that you dont have to do as much work with shadows i thin kthat the dark parts are too dark and the spec map is bump way to high.. maybe try defining the texture a bit more look at some skin pores and stuff. btw i absolutely love the high res and the modeling but it seems like hes a bit heavier and bigger than ur concept ?

Might be too late but I think the proportions are off. The upper trapezius muscles look much too small. They dont really look nearly as buff as the deltoids and the rest of the arms. The middle traps are huge and then they just go upwards into the upper traps and get really tiny in comparison. And the torso looks really short. To me his hips look like theyre connected to the torso even higher than where the rib cage ends. I think changing these things would help out the character a lot.

franklyn- ^^ tanx a lot you were right...you see its my first time doing a normal maped model so i kind of make the texture..the same way as always...but it seem...it was beter to work on the skin texture..more than help..the modeling with darker area...here how the skin is looking now...tanx again! i tink its a lot beter

not bad man, very detailed normal mapping ;).
however I have 2 crits the skin shouldn't be pinkish, this really through's off the howl thing and I think you should scrap the background leave it grey or black the one you have looks kinda tacky ( sorry ) maybe why don't you try a 3 light with shadow approach this does wonders with normal mapping. just keep Messing with the lamps basicaly, find just that right look.
anyway nice work, be looking for updates :)
