I am not a Maya User but I have an issue here that is troubling me.

We have a student worker that is enrolled in the Visual Arts department at our University(Texas A&M) they have sun stations set up to render to a main server for their projects. All is fine. :)

My manager hired him and told me to put together a box that would allow him to make an animation for us to present to a panel. Sortta like a WOW video to help them open their checkbooks for the next school year.

Here is what I put together.
3.4gig Intel with 2 Gig DDR Ram, Quadra Pro 3400 256Meg(PCI EXpress) video card, on windows XP, with purchased copy of Maya 6.5.

Now when he transfers his stuff to his portable hard drive and loads it up into the windows machine it locks up and he can't work on this project. When he loads generic scenes into maya they work fine and render in a snap. Just not his files that he has been working on in the Visual Studio's lab.

Anyone know of any tweeks to help the basic install of maya not do this, or do you all think it is related to some type of file data missing during the transfer from the High end Server to the XP Box we just built.

At this point the student worker won't even touch the new machine because he says that Maya isn't compatible with Windows XP. I toy with Lightwave and may end up using it as my personal workstation soon. LOL

Any hints....You Maya Experts!!

I doubt it's the new machine's fault, Maya works fine on XP just make sure to set the compatibility mode to W2K that's all you can do (plus usual stuff as working drivers etc), all other stuff is rather his job - to be sure all stuff he needs is transfered to the new computer properly.

Just a wild guess, would it help if you export the scenes to maya ascii, using the computer where the scene was created.
Or maybe if plugins are used in the scene are those installed on the new computer?
too many variables that I don't know of, sorry I couldnt help more.
