Great short! Some of the movements seemed a little robotic, but that aside I really liked it, modelling was top-notch and lip-sync was great (especially on "What the..?"). Some of the dust/smoke-clouds looked a little misplaced, e.g. the one where the big blue guy crashes through the wall, there's just this sphere of smoke. Might be better to have the smoke follow the debris or such.
Will you make a larger version of this available for download? And make a follow-up! :-)

very nice animation. Loads of nice movements and nice balance between the charcaters and the background.

thanks for all the comments guys ! :) yes, I have noticed a couple of unsatisfying parts, but did not have much time for it though. anyway, I will try to modify some of them, like the too unique smoke, some crunky animation, etc ..... Im the only one who's playing with this short, so might be slow :P
here are some more screen captures from it

nice animation, i love the lip synch while singing and fighting the robot...
the only thing that bothers me is when he's fighting the big guy, every move gets repeated at least once... but that's just to give you some criticism ;)

This would be so much fun to watch if you would work out the kinks. Things which bothered me most were the sniper dude's hair, the odd way the sound would cut out, the fact that when the light saber thingy failed I couldn't see why, and right after that when the light-saber wielding dude went flying the framerate was too slow.
The action in itself was pretty flipping cool.

05-08-2005, 04:28 AM
thanks a lot for the suggestments, yup, there's much of it still need to be tweaked. anyway, this is done in 5 months' free time, with free sound effects from internet. so, really sorry about that. will try an updated version soon. :)

thedoc, yup, I've done it all by myself, started from scratch. really enjoied the making of it, whole thing was done in Maya, rendered with mentalray ( but simple settings ) on my own 2 computers ( yeah, quite pain in the ass that the rendering time might take almost 40% of the whole process ). would like to share some experience when got more time :P

although I dont like fighting scenes too much (there is allready enough war in this world : ) I found this pretty decent animated. tight and snappy. think you can be proud of your work. congrats
Wonderful.
I like the "Moebius landscapes", the characters.
The camera positions and camera movements are perfect.
The composition work at the end is great.
5 stars from me.
I think you must EDIT the first post and add the link to the high
resolution because someone can miss it. What about trying divx
too to achieve a more small size?

05-09-2005, 05:19 PM
thanks Bao2, I've added the link to the original link with full sized version. anyway, that's over 140mb to download, could be for a while though. and still modifying some parts for an updated version .
well, the city, yeah. actually that came from a sad accident. I originally built a "Metal World" with detailed design and ruin style warehouses arround, but unfortuanetly I lost all the data including another robot character by a comuter HD crash one night. so I built this one in 2 hours, just by extruding faces randomly and using some deformers, quite cheap way :P

Very entertaining. My only complaint is the sound. The sound effects are very harsh and the music is totally undermixed or not even present when it could be... Basically, very neat but that took away a bit from my experience. Congrats!

Good stuff. Funny, the lightsabre running out of batteries and the way the bazooka rocket's wind pulls him.
How long did it take to make?
baiyusong
05-11-2005, 03:28 AM
2 or 3 hours everyday, and the whole process lasted about 5 months from the very start, included one computer crash losing a fully rigged character + a fully modeled metal city.

I know everyone is saying how great this is, but what's the point of the story? Why are people trying to kill him? Are all these characters in league with one another to destroy him? Why is the main character so happy at the beginning? Why does the girl barely miss him with the missle and end up in the main characters arms at the end. As much work as you had put in it, you ought to give a reason and a why to your story. You can dazzle us all you want with fighting moves but there's no point to it. Sorry, man. I hate to be Johnny Raincloud about it but somebody has to say it.
baiyusong
05-11-2005, 09:13 PM
hey aRTCy, thanks for your thought. actually exactly as you said, there's no serious point about the whole story at all. the reason why I made it is: few months ago I was making another personal short which tells about a middle-aged office man, who suffers a lot from the real cruel material world arround and gets insane. and I was bored of making such dark story like that, so suddenly wanna create something pure funny and action like, dont need anyone using brian to think about too deep about it, then this came out :P
so "dazzle people all I want with fighting moves" is probably the whole point of it :P just this world has been too much pressure, sadness and stress. so that's it
thanks !

I like the execution of this short, it`s nice fun piece, for pure entertainment. Animation could be smoother in places, some minor deformation issues on one or two characters but other wise really nice :)
InAction
05-15-2005, 04:23 PM
I really loved this piece. But I have to say that when he fought the big blueish guy, you overused the same animation on different camera angles too much. Replaying the same animation would have worked when he smashed the bike, but not through the whole fight. It just got irritating. Like some said, a little bit robotic movements but otherwise really good. I loved the lipsync at the 'monica, rita, etc' part.
I have to say that this was some huge inspiration for me who started animating seriously for the first time this evening.
Cheers, and good luck in the future mate.

hey, really thank you guys for so many suggestions and encouraging words :D
I've put on a new link of re-cut version to get rid of those too much repeated shots when REX's fighting with MEI ( the big muscle guy ), link also here:
http://louisl.com/TonyWhite/REX_480_newCUT.mov
sorry about bad not so good animation and some kind of rough rigging, could come from short time ( off work of 5 months ), and many characters invloved :P next time maybe only deal with less than 3 characters and concerntrate more to make it perfect
thanks so much again !:)

This is definatly awesome kick a$$ flick. Nice sense of entertainment. Love your dramatic plot, camera movements and angles. Got any tutorial or book you can recommend on camera movements and angles?
Just for a complete eye candy, can't really stop imagining how stunning your metal city would have looked, sorry dude on that. But if you wont mind, did love to see the flick done with your metal city (if you've got the time to rebuild).
Crit: The first bullet from the sniper didnt have any shadow on Rex's face, considering that the shattered pieces from his eye glasses all have shadows as they fly by in slow-mo, the bullet not having shadow stands out especially when its the object of focus on that close up. Everyother thing has been said. And considering your resources, especially Time. You ROCK.
This one goes down my collectors list

WOW - as someone here asked where did you learn about camera movement. It's pretty much spot on all the time. It's like you're watching a real movie - very nice...
I would get rid of the TONY 2005 in the corner and replace it with something more recognisable like a website or email address. If someone in a position to hire you stumbles on this video they're not gonna have much luck with typing TONY 2005 in Google.
any tips for camera movement for a noob? any books or tutorials on how to have a more dynamic camera movement ?
:applause: awesome work - again - Bravo !

Overall, I enjoyed watching this one very much. Don't know if this was mentioned, but some of the first punches thrown by the big guy look like they wouldn't have landed even if Rex didn't duck them out. Also, the bounce off the wall of the Assassin in red after being smacked by the big guy is not very realistic or convincing. Also, maybe you need a close-up of the big guys glasses being knocked off. I didn't know where Rex got another pair of glassess until I watched it again. One or two other small gliches, but overall -- well done!

Crit: The first bullet from the sniper didnt have any shadow on Rex's face,.....Sorry about that. I just noticed the shadow :applause:
webhead is right about the glasses. Took me about 3 passes to notice how Rex's new glasses got into the scene.
baiyusong
05-17-2005, 07:01 AM
yes, agree that I should put a close-up cut to show the sun glasses earlier for a clear telling. and about those pounches, I did design the moves with being sure his fist does reach REX's face or body, maybe because their body sizes' difference kind of big, makes this sorta fake. I should've exaggerated it more.
thanks for these valuable comments, some I've noticed myself :P well, hope my next short will be better , would like put more time on it, instead of 5 months. and will present a "real" story :D
cheers:beer:

I think you have placed the sound just when the image goes in time.
But there is a retard of one 0.1 seconds between image and sound
in real life. You see someone saying "A" and you hear it 0.1 seconds
after. So, perhaps you can try this idea for a better sound sync
perhaps in your next short. First you do all as usual but when the
short is finished edit the sound and append 0.1 seconds of silence
at the very first and then delete 0.1 seconds at the end of the wave.
Then link this new soundtrack to the movie.
0.1 is my favourite retard but you can try to choose your best.
Your short have very very smart ideas. One of my favourites is
the cameras always are moving.
The new version "recut" I think the battle with the blue guy is better
now with the just repetitions. Another thing I love is slow frame rate
to remark some scenes. I have watched this short many many times,
and I have learned a lot. Thanks!!!
baiyusong
05-20-2005, 01:21 AM
hey, thanks Bao for the reminder. actually I was aware of the sound sync problem when doing the lipsync animation for REX . actualy learned from making "Garfield", almost 2 frames earlier shape than the actual sound wave starts. I guess I just messed it up when doing the final cuts in Premiere, sorry for that ( noticed it too :P)
already started my next short, it would be a small one, and as test for better render tech

Very nice!
我一直也很想做一部以角色动作为主的动画片,看了您的作品,很受启发,谢谢
I really like this piece of work with sharp looking environmental details and models. The animation looked good though it can be improved to make it more fluid and the lip synch of the song can be made much better if the lip synch's timing does correspond to the song since it kind of fast. Other than that minor details, I give this a thumbs up! Great work!

This is a cool piece. One comment if I may, I felt like the protagonist was kind of stiff during the action sequence where he punches the pieces of concrete to knock back the stars. (could use some bend in the spline).
Anyhow, I enjoyed it. Peace.

Hey dude,
I remember I checked out this movie a while back when it was still on the "work in progress" forum hehe. I think its a seriously rocking piece, especially for the diversity of villains hehe - youve got them all! My only crit was that some of the sound effects you chose didnt suit the animation, some were very quiet or fuzzy and others were way too loud.
Other than that, top notch :buttrock:

By far one of the best of the best...
The one thing I would add is a camera view, of the main character from the Sniper's position. Very rarely, (if any) do you see two characters in the same shot, unless they're engaged in hand to hand combat.
I totally got lost in the story . . I REALLY LOVED IT!!! Well done. Great characters and a solid story too! As far as Critiques go, I will have to watch it again :D
