View Full Version : Bloomin' stars

I am doing an animation of a space station floating above the earth. I am using the Bloom plugin to give it a nice halo on the specular points and it looks pretty good so far. The problem is that the star sphere in the background is also reacting to the Bloom. At the beginning of the shot, each star looks like a supernova. When the camera pans over to the station, the stars start to look normal.

Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to avoid it?

I'm guessing bloom is finding the brightest spots and blooming them. When the station comes into view, the stars are no longer the brightest spots and therefore are not "bloomed" (I'd need to read the documentation...it's been a while)

Anyway, I see that Bloom takes envelopes. you might just tweak the threshold or size manually so that it looks ok. dunno.

You will get the best results by rendering your star sphere (background) seperately. If you have a compositor such as DFX+ you can have total control of how the star glow behaves.

Use Corona instead of Bloom ...
Make the Special buffer on the station surface = 1 and in Corona make Impute threshold Special buffer , Threshold Mask Specular Shading (if u wanna make bloom on specular) or vise versa ...

Here is the example of using Bloom and Corona together (made in 2000 on LW [6])
