i've been using final render for some bit of time and i wonder if anyone has used it on short film (i know it has been used for commercials and film)
that's because i had the *good* idea of using gi in my short animation! wooooooow it was quite a pain to set up, quite a pain to render, yeah quite a pain. Plus i wasn't rendering at a really high res: 1024X436 and not always pushing the quality to the max: 1/1. I also found that the fRender engine gave me no help since it'd put artifacts every 0.5 seconds on the image.

This is not fR specific but consider that even ILM used 'fake' methods for GI stuff in EPII.
GI is nice but it still lacks tools to smoothly integrate it with the power of the old direct illumination models and it simply requires too much rendering power for today's hardware.
The only way is to somehow bake a GI solution for ridgid geometry (e.g buildings)and use fake stuff on moving/deforming objects (e.g. your character).

Yeah, there is no real way to integrate GI Renders in production, the render times are expensive and the artifacts are annoying, go to fake.

imho all you need is a plugin that emits photons from selected objects\polys, make sure your reflection settings are attuned, and your spec. is off.--- integration works like a charm.

refering to PIXAR site, the avarage render time for a frame in
Monster Inc. was about 3 hours, (rendering with render farm?)
& we know that they didn't use raytrace, GI & caustic, horrible!

yes but think how much layers they have in one frame to composite in postproduction! and the size of the frames ! and the fur! i think that 3 hours/frame its aceptable for that complexity.

that's ok?...just a simple calculation:
we have : 3 hours/frame --> 8 frames/day on single machine
85min x 60 (sec.) x 24 (fps) = 122400 frames total
122400 / 8 (frames/day) = 15300 days
15300 / 365 (# of days in a year) = 41 years! (1 render node)
by rendering with over 100 SUN super computers at pixar &
rendering 24 hours per day it takes near 6 months to render the
whole movie!! ;) i said it's HORRIBLE, not impossible or not acceptable!
