How would I go about getting nice blurry shadows, that arn't too dark, without fuzzing a shadow map?

area lights or use the "spinning light trick"

Deepends on the lighting situation. But you could light it with a skydome (Maybe HDR) and convert it into a "dome point light rig" with a plugin. Eki's I think. Then use one area light for your main shadow and light source. Or a Area for the Diffuse and a Distant for the spec.

Basicaly Area lights are soft shadowed and Shadow maped lights as well. Or A very large light source will give fuzzy shadows as long as the light rays are not paralel. IE Point lights in a grid format.
