View Full Version : Character: Villiage Elder
PhilWesson 05-05-2005, 02:52 PM Posted this on the Spinquad forums as well...
So i've been working on some stuff for a webcomic (and possible animation later down the road) and here's my progress for the first issue's villiage elder:

Not particularly pleased with the beard, but we'll see how it looks when the model's done. Might change it later on.

Started out with him being a little pot-bellied, but I decided to change that because 1) i'm having trouble modeling it, and 2) it didn't make sense with the story (leader of a village of scavenging outcasts has a pot-belly? Maybe not...)
Anyways, sorry about not having AA on the second picture, C&C are welcome.

His head needs a lot of tweaking. I suggest you find a reference of an elder, (probably anime style since thats what you are after, i guess) and try fixing the proportions. The ears are way too big, and they don't look much like ears. His beard instead of pointy shapes could have subpatched clumps of hair (like a long inverted teardrops) which you can shape the beard with, and then tweak with the magnet tool and twist the ends so that they are a bit random and wavey.
Also his chest looks like a woman's chest especially because of the shading. Reduce his breasts to a minimum. He is an elder after all, he is not working out every day.
I hope you don't mind of the many suggestions. Practice makes perfect after all! :)

Dennik,
thanks for the thoughts. yeah, a lot of what is there is just there so I know where to put stuff later (the ears).
Never thought of the inverted teardrop idea, gonna give that a shot tonight.
As far as the chest, i think i need to find better reference... I just don't feel like looking at old man chests tonight.

Here's a small update.
Dennik, took your advice about the beard. Here are the results:

haha i agree with the assessment that it appears he has breasts. Cover him up with some clothes dammit =) I bet that will take care of the problem. I like the last update - his beard looks better and he looks a bit more dour.
