View Full Version : patch face and a mesh body
snot_nose 10-08-2002, 03:07 AM Is there a good way to attach a patch face to a mesh body? should I convert the patch face to an edit mesh (or opposite)?

use step 1 or 2 (less geometry, less bulges)
for the surface modifier and then convert to editable poly
(is better than editable mesh)
then use poly tools to refine your model and
to fit the head to the torso
finally use mesh smooth
spline patches are quite useful for constructing a basic form, but i prefer polygons to build a whole character

the thing is that i'm going to do morph targets on my patch face, and from what i understood, patches are better for morph targets because of their handles + patches take less memory.
but i agree that edit poly (or mesh) is much more friendly then patches. I think it's going to be the last time i'm going to use patches. i'm tring to sort my patch buldges for a while now and my wireframe topology still looks pretty bad. i hope it won't affect too much on the morphing.
maybe i can use edit poly above the morph modifier and attach the head to the body?
why do you say that edit poly is better then mesh? what are the difference excpet the border option?

bad idea to merge head and body together---> you have to duplicate the WHOLE mesh, if you want to create morph targets
(morph targets depend on same mesh topology and polygon count)
i hope your character has clothes on, a sweater or something...
just put the head on the rest....
use the low-poly cage(with out mesh smooth) to create your morphtargets, then put an editable poly modifier (after tweaking the geometry) on it and THEN mesh smooth
the soft selection function is very cool for tweaking a face for some expressions ( i wish i have something similar to this in maya :P )
polys are more "solid" then editable meshes--> delete an edge in a mesh and you`ll have a hole
and there is a bundle of cool poly-tool-plug-ins, which are non available for meshes
and dont forget - a good face topolgy depends on your edges, try to place the edges similar to the muscles in your face
check out the various anatomy sources on the web or wire-frames of good characters
-puuuuuuuuuh-have to go back to work-good luck-
