Even when you don't have questions yet, spend some time reading the Painter User Guide or Help > Help Topics. When you do have a question, first refer to the Painter User Guide or Help > Help Topics. If you don't understand Painter terminology well enough to find something in the documentation, it'll help to do the following:
Go to the Help menu and click Show Tool Tips (if it says Hide Tool Tips you don't need to click it as they're already enabled).
Then when you want to know what something is called, hold your cursor very still over that item until it's name is displayed. It can take a few seconds, especially if you let the cursor move at all.
Assuming you're using Painter IX -
For Cloning questions, read the following:
Painter IX Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Cloning and Tracing
To learn about the Painter IX Align to Path feature, read the following:
Painter IX > Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > Painting
On the right panel, click the link named "Marking the Canvas".
On the next page, scroll down and read the section named "Aligning Brush Strokes to Paths and Shapes".
