How come my 'donut' looks different when rendered ? Not only the colour seems to be different it also looks like the lighning is.

Looks like the ambient, incandacence or both are high for the material. Push the slider to black and render again. That should work!

Move your point light away slightly or drop the intensity of it. The work space is never a true reflection of what your model will look like when its rendered especially lighting and texturing.

For a more accurate read of you image- hit the number "7" in maya, and turn on Shading>High Quality Rendering (look for shading in any Perspective or Orthagraphic view- or use the Hotbox- second row from the top of the Hotbox). Check out the help file on this by going to the Shading> High Quality Rendering Menu and hitting Help (upper right hand corner of all menus)> Help on High Quality Rendering. Maya puts these help menus all over the place and are a great way of learning all kind of neat crap. You need a newer graphics card to support the high quality rendering- but it can show a pretty accurate look of lighting... also- just hitting 7 gives a pretty good indication. The real time render in Maya is like a game render- its quality is highly limited so that it play back at real time.
