View Full Version : Light emit from objects? Realistic trees? Luminous clouds?
MadSkillzMan 05-05-2005, 04:42 AM hey guys,, i moved from max. Yea i got alotta raz over prices, but this is via a student software program.
In max i fell in love w. a few plugins, Lightmesh, Tree factory, some mountain maker, a terra plugin (youd make a B&W image and it would create a mountain terra) afterburn (for the cloud) and thats about it.
I quickly said screw this i love C4D! I exported my last WIP, C4D opened it, allowed me to set the textures for the trees (bark and needles) they look so much better in c4d. But id like to know how to make even more? also how would i texture the leaves and then bark?
i know theres a terrain shader built in. i dont really like it though, anyone know what im talking about where you draw the B&W image?
Clouds, i have the pyrocluster plugin, is that where i need to go?
LIGHTMESH! is it at all possible to make light EMIT FROM an object? cast shadows, caustics, etc..
Yes im very muchly so a newb to C4D. but i really like it. so im sorry for all the Qs, any help is appreciated. i dont need IN DEPTH, i just usually need a pointer in the general direction and away i go.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Dear MadSkillzMan
As I see from your sentences and questions u are quite far into 3d. If u wanna do these same things in Cinema, please take heart to some of my advices.
1. U need to know and master the terminology and ways how C4d does thing, I think it is the first to master. Play with the app, try modeling, try creating simple shaders, try creating projected textures and UV mapped textures, try setting up lights, render settings, particles... Feel how C4d works. If u do it u'll get answers for some pf your questions.
2. For creating afterburn like volumentric effects, u need to dig into the particle systems found in C4D. It has two of this kind. The first one is the base particle system, the second one is the thinking particles module.
The base system is quite simple to set up, but do not wait complicated particle interactions, u can use it however for a bunch of effects. The second one is a more capable system wich uses a node based programming interface to make particle emission also for interactions, forces ...
3. For rendering particles there are a lot of techniques, u can use geometry as particles with adequate textures, shaders, but C4d contains a volumentric shading system Pyrocluster also, with it u can set up afterburn like renderings.
4. For clouds, I suggest u to use Ozone2 plugin from Eovia, it is very fast and produces realistic sky with clouds, volumentric effects.... But if u wanna fly trough clouds I think u have to use particle systems with mapped clody textures or pyrocluster.
5. For creating trees and plant u can use Xfrog or DPIT instante Nature, the are superb tools, not the one button and ready kind but u have every tool to create trees, plants, in some Lsystem style but interactively.
6. The terrain shader can be a starting point, but the point is to create layered shaders, which is very straightforward in Cinema. Try creating procedural-layered shaders. Also u can use DarkTree for creating superb shaders with a node based approach and a very intuitive interface.

Alright thank you. Sorry it was just kind of a shock to me at first, hafta relearn EVERYTHING and im working on a small indie film project, so i was just trying to get my abilites back.
However in playing with C4D i think i may have my first WIP for fun, actually im going to enter into a county fair for experimental art.
thanks for your advice!

Hi MadSkillzMan,
have a look at the video tutorials at http://www.c4dcafe.com (http://www.c4dcafe.com/)
They almost cover everything at a very basic and easy to understand level.
I think you'll enhance very fast with the knoweledge of these tutorials.
greets,
Michael

I think you'll make progress fast. Though rendering trees and clouds are never as fast as we would like!
You might look at the 3d attack magazine back issues for features you want to learn more about:
