just blocked out the basic composition. The scene is a schoolyard basketball court with agroup of kids picking players for their team. among the draft choices is a nerdy little kid and his/her b-ball playing robot. The team captains argue over who gets to/has to have the duo on their team...

uh, well this isnt REALLY line art...In digital, I tend to work in a painterly style.In this step, I chopped the frame down to aid in scale and started defining the robot as well as the kids in the foreground. It usually helps me to get one of the focal points finished enough to where I know it will look cool early on. That gives me inspiration and reassures me as I go along and try to work out the rest of the painting. I imagine the red-haired kid just picked the robot duo, and now the other captain is arguing back that his team got to have them last time or something like that...
