View Full Version : edit mesh vs edit poly
simps 05-05-2005, 01:51 AM This might be a stupid topic but I'm wondering what the big differences for game art is with editable mesh and poly. I'd like to know the advantages and disadvantages for each. Which do you guys prefer? I prefer modeling with poly but I noticed you can't extrude splines for things such as hair or tree detail like you can with edit mesh. What's the general concensus in the game world?

balled characters ? ;)
Yes it is a stupid discussion, just decide for yourself. Use WHAT you think is best, try out, learn just make the best out of everything.
sure you can do edgeextrudes in editable Poly, you just have to prepare your model right ;)
you can't do an edgeextrude with a closed model, thats right, but you could split one Edge to open it and the extrude hair, or whatever you want... i defintaley like epoly mor, 'cause it is more flexible and the modellingtools are way better...

Edit poly seems to be more forgiving on mistakes by giving you something of a "preview" for welding verts and the like. I'm speaking from Max 5 experience mostly here, but I find edit mesh enjoys spewing out all kinds of fun bugs when doing more complex editing, like cutting polys. Seems like Edit Poly is more stable, but I haven't given it much of a run, only started checking it out more in depth recently, I mostly prefer edit mesh.

I think this is an interesting question, cos' I know a fair Artists that love the Edit Poly tool in 3dsMax, and then me included prefer Edit Mesh...but it's weird but in XSI I love the polygon tools very, very powerful, and just as good to use, I like both tho'...sorry to derail sligtly tho'....but yep...I prefer Edit Mesh in 3dsMax...:)

Max 7 finally has an edit poly modifier. It can preserve texture UV's when vertex editing a textured object.
many of the newer features (Max 6 & 7) were only available in third party plugins (meshtools, cs polytools)...
Also the dege loop, connect, and ring optioins are really helpful.
Edit poly is definitely my prefered choice now, though I do have to switch to edit mesh now and then to make edges visable- why they didn't include this into edit poly is beyond me. I suppose it will be a new feature in Max 8
select two vertices and use connect :)
and then use the meshtools funktion edge turn to rotate it :)

I use both. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I switch back and forth between mesh and poly, a lot quicker to work with epoly tho.
