View Full Version : How to texture a furry animal ?
Indigo 10-07-2002, 09:48 PM I got a problem. :annoyed:
I want to texture a rat ( ), and I'm having problem with making the fur.
Is there some "trick" to make fur ? Has anyone done something like that?
I was thinking with some bump map or something, but I have no idea how to achieve this.
Does anyone have a clue/idea/tutorial ?
p.s. the animal won't be animated, and I'm using 3dMax 4

Well one simple solution would be to use Shag:Fur from Digimation. But it costs money so maybe it isn't a such good idea.
But u could try http://www.scriptspot.com for some free scripts for doing hair/fur on the rat. Try searchin for Hair and u should find some scripts
I think bumping is kinda hard to use when u want a fur like effect.
Well gl with the Fur on the Rat
Hope the links are of some use

I have Shag:FUR but it just doesn't do what I would like it to do.. (maybe because I don't know how to use it the way it should be used :hmm: , or it just ain't THAT good .. he he he)
I'll try with them scripts to see what will happen....
btw. if you saw the Ice Age, how did they make the Mammoth or sabertooth fur ???..... ??????...????

Well Shag:Fur is hard to get an nice result with. U just gotta work hard on it to make it look nice.
Yeah i have seen IceAge....great movie !
I don't know really how they made the fur . Put i guess Maya was used so it probly something pure maya.
But fur n hair can be made of lets say plains with pacity maps that u make in photoshop.

Click the link to get an idea on how to use opacity maps.
I can't think of any other good solution right now but i'll post if i come up with something.
btw do u have any wip image of the rat to show ?
gl on the fur

here's the picture of the rat/mouse :)
it ain't perfection (as a matter of fact it ain't even good lookin' ) but I like the way it turned out since I had no references, and it is also my very first subdiv model.
It has a lot of mistakes, I know.
enough of complaints, here's the picture

Hi Indigo
Is this model for the mousetrap competition in 3DLuvr? :)

Most animators use one of the two techniques namely, "card system" and "volumetric rendering of particles" to create furs.
In "Ice Age", they used the card system technique.

Yeah, the mouse was for the 3dluvr competition, but he won't make it  ... can you explain these two techniques you mentioned "card system" & "volumetric rendering of particles" ?

This is what I know...
"volumetric rendering of particles"...
Some of you might know that particle systems can be used to model not only fire, clouds and rain, but also grass and trees as well. The difference between these two is that the latter one models the whole life cycle of the particles. Hair and furs are created using this analogy.
As for "card system"...
To create fur, thousands of little card panels are placed onto the surface of the object (i.e. a mouse in your case). Picture of furs are then mapped onto each of them. The texture map is then overlaid by opacity maps that makes the surface transparent wherever there isn't a picture of a fur.
I hope this helps Indigo...
p.s. I was going to enter that competition, but I got exams at the moment... :annoyed:
