View Full Version : Flames

I've been testing out different methods of creating realistic fire/flames (mostly the kind you see in fiery explosions, like gas-stations that explode etc., checkout the bomb in Matrix) :buttrock: .

I feel that I'm using the wrong method mostly, and I could use some "guidance".

I'm able to create badly-looking flames, so no links to 3dcafe or similar please... I want comments and methods, not tutorials, but if you wanted to help me, thanks anyway....I've seen some amazing works, but due to ©, i'm not reposting, hehe..

So, any ideas?

Sounds like you need some sort of volumetric effect. Combustion that ships with max is pretty poor so I'd avoid using it if possible. You should take a look at Afterburn and Pyrocluster. Both of these plugins will allow you to pull off the type of effects that you're attempting realistically.

These look kinda weird, but hopefully you get the idea.

while the 2 plugins he mentioned are great dont over look Pheonix 1.5 for some nice flames

Yes, Phoenix can't be beat for flames (www.chaoticdimension.com) but the original post was about fireballs, something it's not really designed for.

Thanks, all your posts were really helpfull.
I was looking only for something like the picture BrandonD posted, but all the links and packages you posted looks promissing. I've had a go at Afterburn for max2.5, but never used it for flames, only clouds.

Anyway, thanks....

y not use can xplosions. It render fast and looks good too if applied correctly. What i'm saying is use plates for animated xplosion footages. There is one that comes in the second cd.

my 2 cents.

OT: Hey Brandon, did you happen to try to re-render that gasoline explosion in the shipping version of Brazil? Just wondering if/what the time change would be on something unusual like that =)

Not yet, but I'd like to. I've been so busy for the last year that I didn't even get any time to test Brazil. I'm looking forward to taking the next month off to do some personal projects and Brazil is on the list.

Maybe some one could explain BrandonD's first post to me; Is that a Brazil-standard-scene, Afterburn-scene or...?
If I'm not misjudging the scene (or the image name), has he used brazil and afterburn to render and light the scene? What material has he used for this? It's a bloody amazing explosion/combustion :surprised .

Thanks.

not sure but i would love to get hold of that scene so i can see how that was done

i have afterburn but was unable to recreate that with it so maybe it is brazil...

Hi

If you want to use afterburn, www.3dluvr.com under the art zone > maxed out section has several comprehensive tutorials by Allan Mckay.

Check them out they are really good.

Hi

There are a few more tuts there now regarding the plugin, and i must say that it should be up to you to actually expand and play with it as he shows you what to do with it, i don't think he would reveal all his secrets.

Surely you can achieve that type of stuff with it.

So if vell decides to use the plugin i think it would be a good place to start thats all.

yeah i know that
doesnt matter though all i was saying is i would like to see that brazil file
i have already been tinkering with afterburn to find a good effect and am sorda close but still so far off

That's ClusterBomb image was from early last year when I was still working at Blur. Steve came over and asked me to test Brazil's GI with volumetrics, so I made an explosion with Afterburn and the Explode daemon. That scene was never complete, but it did what it was supposed to do - prove that volumetrics could illuminate the scene properly.

mind telling me what you did for the spray setup(spray/spacewarps)??

i sorda got the hang of afterburn but cant get my spray to creat that much of a dome
instead it looks more like a stream of fire no matter what i do

Well, actually that may seem a bit misleading. There's less than 50 particles making up the fire in that shot. AB does the rest by building a spherical volume around each particle.

for rel?? less than 50..jesus LOL i must really be screwing up with afterburn then

any tips?

When you register Afterburn, you get access to several more example files, two of which explain how to do explosion/fire effects. I'll cover this in detail later on down the road when I get particlefx.com up and running. In the meantime there is no simple way to explain it other than it's the same technique you'd use for clouds, but instead you use the Explode deamon to illuminate the volumetrics radially over their lifetime based on several parameters.

Just to mention it...Cebas has a lite version of PolyCluster that's free....
