View Full Version : poster and alien design
marcolago 05-03-2005, 10:20 PM Hi!
This is my first post here and I would receive your suggestions and critiques on a work I made and on a second work I'm doing in these days.
The first work is a poster for a videogame, the title is in italian an sound like:
The Terrific Menace form Invaders from Audio Galaxy.
The game is an "old-style graphic adventure".
The image is here: http://marcolago.com/illustrazioni/hires/ltm.jpg
What do you thick about tecnique and composition?
The composition does not satisfied me completely...
The second image is a portrait of an alien. One of the three painted on the background of the poster.
The image is here: http://marcolago.com/misc/cgtalk/alieno.jpg
and here is the "bluesheet": http://www.genereavventura.com/dev/grafica/_showroom/bluesheet.jpg
just to understand the anatomy :)
Please tell me what do you think and suggest me how to obtain a cool skin for the alien.
Thanks to all (and sorry for my english)

I think that the smaller yellow words in the bottom left corner should be made thicker..right now they're very thin and dont' fit the style I think.
The composition isn't that bad from what I can tell, but my eyes are always drawn to that lower left corner..perhaps even change those yellow letters to a light blue? Or perhaps darken the left corner/bottom border area. Try playing around with different small things like that and see what happens.

I Try!
The caracter is "the official genereAvventura's" caracter bu I think that make it bold should not be a problem.
Make more dark the lower left corner is a good idea.
Thank you!

the guys legs look a little short to me. plus i think it would be a good idea to make a cover image represet more of what the story is about without having to read the title. i cant read the title, and i have a confused idea as to what the story is about. not bad tho, i quite like the colouring and lighting.

uhm... fot the short legs question:
I've painted them from a photo reference of myself in that position... so probably I have short legs :P eh eh eh
I suppose that the pose is not a standard runnig pose but is like a cartoon pose, moreover the shadow is too near to the caracter and false the perspective.
for the other question I can say that I would to make a cover just like Monkey Island, Day of the tentacle and similar old games, where the people was attracted by the mistery of the scene and by the "beauty" of the cover, but the game will have a design deeply different from the cover.
Just as reference, this is the cover of the firs monkey island: http://www.ecards.cz/pictures/m/o/monkey_island_cover.jpg
and we all know how the graphic design of the game is :P
I will make some modification to the image as soon as possible ad I re-post it for other critiques

Ok... I've done the changes suggested...
The yellow text nows is thicker (and also the URL bottom the text is more readable IMHO)
The background behind the yellow text is darker and I have to say that this make more deeper the image
I also removed the shadow under the guy to improve the sense of runnig and made a little color correctio to make the look of the sheen more "warm"
here is the lores, click on it to view the hires:

and post critiques and suggestion... again :)
The poster size is 35 x 50 cm (13.8 x 19.7 inches) at 300 dpi

ciao lago , nice stuff , looks good i noticed that the light on that robot looks like is coming from the left whille it seems like is coming from the right on the guy
also the robot has a shadow on the floor while the guy doesnt
legs look short but i think it a matter of perspective here ,perhaps you shoud make the upper body a little smaller so it would look like the viewer is watching from below
well thats my 2cents :)
buon lavoro.
