CGTalk - Mysterious ZSpheres

Ugh, I hope I don't offend with what may possibly be a dumb question, but if you take a look at this dino modeled (http://206.145.80.239/zbc/showthread.php?t=20372) with ZSpheres, there's these mysterious ninja gray spheres on the outside of the mesh. What are those mysterious spheres called and how can I create them? Oh, and what do they do?

Those are influence/weight spheres. The pull the mesh in whatever direction the point in relation to how big/small and how near/far they are. To create them I believe you alt-click on the trunk between the terminating z sphere and the z sphere it is growing from. There's a pretty good demo in the ZB2 help interface as well as the practical guide.
