this will be the 1st time I have made a picture in PS ...I have been learning it for about 7 months now but mostly thru photomanips or making signatures so I have learned the basic tools but now I wish to learn to make my own art ....eventually. I have drawn about a dozen small pieces on Oekaki boards and I like the feed back and CnC soo here goes...
I have only just begun to color in around the eye area and until I get a tablet itll be even slower for me as I hate to draw with my mouse

This is really wonderful for a third attempt. Some perspective issues, however: the nostrils are unconvincing. I think if you look at your own nostrils in the mirror for a while you'll find that at this angle they look more like slits or teardrops than semicircles, and that the tip of the nose may partially obscure the nostril that's farthest away from the viewer. Also, the mouth looks like it's too far to the right and is somewhat "pasted on," that is, it doesn't follow the curve of the head. I think the right corner should be tilted down a little bit, or the left corner tilted up, and the top edge of the bottom lip should be curved more. What helps me with things like this is to look at myself in the mirror, in the same pose, and to try to imagine my face not as a face but as a series of abstract shapes.
With that said, the shading is coming along beautifully. The skin tone seems very fresh and lifelike. I think it would be nice to see some more subtle shadows. Keep it up!

hello there! :)
What you've got is a good start - my first thought though is that you should examine eyes more closely. They don't really come to little points at both sides the way you have them. The upper lid overlaps the lower ever so slightly. I get the impression by the eyes on the girl, that she's being seen straight on, but her nose seems to be seen slightly from the side. I think since the turn of the head seems apparent in the chin line, you should adjust the eyes to match the nose. Both the mouth and the right eye need to turn a little with the turn of the face. I'd say too, that the left side of her face (our right) could be a little wider - in order to pull her ear a little farther away from her features.
Keep goin' on it - that's pretty good for someone chasing around two kids!

tks soo much for the crit....hopefully later tonight or tomorrow Ill have some free time to try to make some adjustments and do more coloring ...thankfully I dont think itll be too hard to adjust any of the things mentioned ...LOL I think thats why I love digital art whereas I never took much interest in traditional art no mess no fuss and much easier to edit especially with layers

I agree with Nailati and BMunchausen on their critique. I'm not sure what kind of skin tone you're going after, but as it is now, it's too light in my opinion and doesn't look natural. I like to paint from dark to light. I think if you did that with the skin tone it'll give you some nice contrast with the skin. I made this real quick to show you. It's not that great but you get the idea.

Try to add a bit of perspective / volume to the face .. right now its looking like a flat surface ... curve it

Yes I am fair skinned. I do like your idea of coloring from dark to light I will definetely try that next time ...please keep in mind this is just a beginning Im sure as I go I will have some darker shadows....but not all people are dark skinned

Oh no, haha. I wasn't saying that your skin color coudn't be lighter. All I was saying is that you should paint from dark to light. The skin color I used is just a default skin tone.

Also, painting skin tones - I wouldn't rely on photographs for that. There are tutorials probably even on this site, about painting skin tones - skin is really translucent, and has different undertones depending on the person. Violet, green, red, yellow, etc...
There needs to be some indication of that, rather than just "out of the tube" looking peachy flesh tones, or the face usually ends up looking chalky. The skin tone will reflect everything around it, and the color will be altered by that as well. You're much better off working from life for a while before trying to paint from a photo, if you really want to learn to paint skin tone. Photos take so much information away. I mean, why bother just copying a photo exactly? A painting should hopefully, transcend the photo.

the sketch itself had a photo reference which was black and white but it looks nothing like original I guess I only used it as a loose guide...as for the coloring I am using no reference other then myself and tutorials....altho I am using shades that look normal to me...I only showed those skin tones from my picture because he said the skin tones was too light and looked unrealistic...I realise skin looks different depending on its surroundings and lighting
