Booyah! My first CGTalk animation session.

I'm still deciding which one to do. I have yet to do an animation with a heavy object so I'll probably do a strong man. (hours later) Strong man it is :) Hey, how come my thread title still has "Strong Man or Magician"? I thought I changed it.To Do List

I'll probably use the simpleGuy rig since you can scale and key the proportions.

Hmmm.... I don't think my idea is good enough. I like it, but after looking for some strongman acts like carrying 17 people, breaking chains, bending horseshoes, etc. I don't know what to do

just an idea , you can have that one weight that drop down bounce away like its made of rubber so it shows he was cheating with the weights. He then drops the rest and slowly exits the stage all embarrassed while you can have stuff like water bottles and stuff flying at him thrown by the audience.

Cause right now i dont get why he shrinks , or how he stays perfectly in balance when the weight balance shifts so much.

keep on thumbnailing , good start!

I like that idea sheep...I was trying to figure out what was going on in the thumbs and it just didn't read to me....I like the idea of him cheating though. Good job so far Siron!! Keep going:thumbsup:

Well I was thinking that the weights were really balloons and one of them pops. I didn't think of things being thrown at him for cheating, I like that idea. Thanks for the comments guys. I'll play around with other ideas of him cheating like your suggestion sheep. Another idea I have is have him juggle other people. Oh that'd be real fun! Have him juggle generi, IKjoe, lowman, etc. :D

Here's a little shot of my simpleStrongman :)

Good stuff you have going there.

Crits:

I think your strongman should be a weak man. If he's strong, why would he need to cheat!

Maybe it starts with him already having the weights over his head. He then sets the weights down after lifting, they hit some debris like little sharp rocks. This pops the weights, and the bar teeters back and forth till it settles. The audience throws stuff at him, so he grabs the pole and tries desperately to hide behind it.

Just suggestions, but it's great that you've started already. :applause:

Keep it up.

Thanks Ænvil. I was thinking of just making him look puny lifting "heavy" weights.

Just exploring more ideas. This time I'll have him juggle a couple of kids one handed and then the ringmaster comes in and yells at him.

http://sirron.skunkops.net/files/CGT_Session12_Thumbnail02.jpg

Man... I need to act this out to make sure the timing is right. I don't know if I can do this in 300 frames (12.5 seconds)

LOL

That's pretty good! You should have him fall on top of the kids in the last frame. He's not sure how to react to the ringmaster staring at him so he just drops on top.
Then the ringmaster lowers and shakes his head.

Just a suggestion.

Oh! I can have the ringmaster throw his cone (whatchamacallit, that thing that projects your voice) at the strongman knocking him out and then he falls on the kids :)

The old 'Bullhorn and the Pile of Kids' routine. Gets 'em everytime!

Great stuff. Love the idea of people getting juggled...

Just a thought, but maybe the kids could be clowns instead. They tend to get in trouble and muck around. And we all like to see them take falls - that way they could really get thrown around hurt and stuff but our sympathy would stay with the strong guy (not the poor kids).

Actually the last character thown could get thrown extra high and ages later come down on the ringmaster. Strong-guy left standing there all embaressed.

As I say, just a passing thought... :)

Ok, I just have to share this idea for a human cannonball act. :D

Someday I'll do it, but I want to do the strongman one first.

Lookin at that first set you posted when one side of the weight pops off, maybe he looks up at the weight with one side missing and the bar swings towards him and smacks him off of the screen.

That last post is crazy man...those poor dudes. It would be hilarious to see that one animated. I like where you are going with the strongman...I just wonder if that is too much happening in 12 seconds. I hope it can work out for you.

SirRon
05-07-2005, 04:44 AM
Yeah, it is a lot for 12 seconds. I acted it out (including throwing the bullhorn and falling on the kids which is unboarded) and it came out at 17 seconds. Taking out one of the flexing poses it's 14 seconds. I think I'll be able to make it work.

Anyway, here's the cast of my audition (probably spent more time on it than I needed heh)

Great poses! like the idea of using different rigs too - maybe you can give some feedback on the plus' and minus' of each them, when you're done...

Good stuff.. :)

SirRon

Thanks guys

steveblake: a review on the rigs after the session? sure :) I really like all of these rigs though, they all have their pros and cons.

Well here's a rough, pay no attention to the frame counter. I think I concentrated too much on the juggle and not enough on the posing. I think I'll redo it

Should I use constraints on the rigs when he's juggling them?

Ronan,

I think it's a good idea to go back and loko at your posing. Really focus on making strong poses with good silhouettes.
Also, when you juggle, you throw from hand to hand (usually) not throw and catch with the same hand.
Here is a reference video (it's a little tough to see since the webcam can't capture the movements quickly enough and there is lots of motion blur - but it may help.

Oooh on the contrary

One handed juggling (http://homepage.mac.com/abramr/juggling/tutorial/category/tricks/twoinoneoutside.html) :D

I've been learning how to juggle myself. You know... something to do during rendering heheh

Aenvil

It fits the character to juggle with just one hand.

For example,

Strong man lifts barbell with two hands. :)

Strong man lifts barbell with one hand.

Depends on the situation, But go with the one hand.

I did say "usually". ;)

I concede!

Your timing isn't working for the characters that are being juggled. they're both defying gravity. particualrly lowman. But hey, it's stepped, so it should be an easy fix.

either way, nice creative idea. keep at it.

Update
- still in stepped keys
- Got rid of some keyframes
- Refined poses
- colored some characters
- Did ringmaster's walk.

Those keys are looking good Ronan. They read much better than the first blocking phase. I like the shoulder reaction on the strongman when he drops the people.

My only suggestion at this stage is to have him toss Generi one more time in order to delay the effect the Ringmaster has when he yells. The SM keeps juggling one more round, giving the impression he is really concentrating on what he's doing.
Just a suggestion though - ;)

I'm thinking there isn't enough time to add an extra juggle....but maybe. I think that it looks good...I would just delay the shoulder shrugs a few more frames after the characters land...it'll keep the frame clean and let the actions register to the audience. Keep going:)

- Strongman Linear keys

ehhh.... :hmm:

The more I work on this the more I think I'm messing up. Looks like I need to speed up some things.

I'll probably have enough time to add another toss. But I'll keep working on this before I add stuff. Thanks for the comments guys :)
