Dear NYC ACM SIGGRAPH Member,

I'm writing to give you a final reminder about two NYC ACM SIGGRAPH events scheduled for this week. Remember, details about all of our events can always be found on our web site at nyc.siggraph.org.
And while you’re checking out our web site, be sure to take a look at our MetroCAF 2005 Call For Participation. MetroCAF 2005 will premiere in NYC on Monday, September 26th, 2005 at FIT’s Haft Auditorium.This is the third year for NYC ACM SIGGRAPH’s Metropolitan Area College Computer Animation Festival and we’re expecting our biggest and best show ever! Tonight, Monday, May 2, we are proud to present “Hi-res vs. Lo-res Graphics: A Game Design Debate”, a panel being presented in cooperation with the NYC Chapter of the International Game Developers’ Association (IGDA). This event will be held from 7:00PM to 9:00PM at the New School University’s Tishman Auditorium at 66 West 12th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues – closer to 6th).
Since their earliest inception, the graphics of computer games have improved enormously--there's really no comparison between the blocks of color of an Atari 2600 game and the high poly-count models of a modern console or PC title. Yet the essential "look" of almost all games can be characterized as either Nintendo kid-friendly (bright, primary colors), or Quake down-n-dirty. As we begin to approach the cinematic quality visuals in games, can we expect a greater diversity in art styles and palettes in the games we play? And indeed, if cinematic quality visuals, for so long a holy grail of the field, become achievable, will games begin to turn away from realistic depictions of the world, as the art world did in the face of photography?
In short, the debate is HIGH-RES vs. LOW-RES graphics and how they impact game design and overall player satisfaction/suspension of belief. Bios for all currently scheduled presenters are available on our web site.
NYC ACM SIGGRAPH would like to thank the New School University / Parsons School of Design for their generous support of this event. Admission for this event is free to both NYC ACM SIGGRAPH Members and the general public.


Our second event this week is our popular “BYOA” series from 7:00PM to 9:00PM on Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at Phebe’s. We have settled on the first Wednesday of each month as the night for BYOA so please keep this in mind for the rest of the spring.
Phebe's is located at 359 Bowery at East 4th Street in the East Village. The back room has been renovated with more tables and chairs so it will be easier to eat something and give us more flexibility as far as letting people get as close to the TV as they want. And the whole AV system has been upgraded. There is now a brand new plasma TV with a new room sound system so that we'll be able to see (and hear) all your animations as they were meant to be. We had a great turnout last month so we hope that maybe you can join us this month.
Maybe it's a completed animation or maybe it's just some roughs you've got so far on the way to completion. Or some effects shots you're dying to show. Whatever it is, as long as it was produced on a computer and includes CGI we want to give you the opportunity to show it.
This is your chance to share what you've been working on with the rest of the NYC-area digital community - and to check out what others have been doing. Come and meet other animators, exchange tips and ideas, maybe even find a future collaborator. Bring a VHS tape or DVD and we'll play it. Beverages and food will be available for purchase. Admission for NYC ACM SIGGRAPH members and the general public is free.
