never happened to me. try before converting to edit-poly, put an extrude modifier with amount=0 then convert it to edit poly.

It could be that the tiny area of pinching at the lower part of the D is causing a spline issue and therefore not converting. Have you checked to see if all points at that location are closed/welded etc.?
Before converting to edit-poly, put an extrude modifier with amount=0 then convert it to edit poly.
Only if you want coincident faces!
Try attaching the text to a rectangle you create from the view (front for eg), then delete the rectangle and try again. This resets the transform. Also sometimes you just have to break up the text string and attach after meshing.

usually those shite freeware typefaces are made poorly.....
When you convert to poly and things disappear means there is a vert overlapping a segment. So in your case whatever letter is causing you a problem covert it to a spline and fix any overlapping. Typically I do all my type work in illustrator first and then bring it to max. It just insures that you won't run into little problems like that not to mention you can kern properly in illustrator. Hope that helps.

alright, i think i know what you're saying about it over lapping.
but now i have another question about the text. when i do try to convert it to an edible poly. there is no back side to the text.
This is what i have for the front:

but the back isn't solid:

how can I fix this???

You could try adding a cap holes modifier or use a 2 sided material.

no, neither work.
Anyone else have an idea?

in e-poly use a border selection to select the back open part of the letter, and then cap, I have done it in the past, not sure why it wouldn't work for you..
You must have extruded at some point, converting a spline to a mesh would give you a flat result.
What about just using an extrude modifier? Did you try capping at the edit poly border level?
