Monthly character animation comp / learning tool , there are no prizes as such in this competition , instead , if you are the monthly winner , your wining peice goes into the gallery of winners .
The group uses yahoo groups as a message board or you can choose to be on the mailing list .
The monthly entrants are voted on by members , most voted for entrant is the winner.
Post your work for crit , crit others works , some big names get about on the board , Rob Starr , Keith Lango , Jason Taylor .
An absolute must if you take your character animation seriously, one of the best communities / groups out there for animators today .
Ben .
I recommend the 'Digital Character Animation' series of books by George Maestri. Very helpful book and its not program specific either.

The Posetool plug-in by Simo Sokerov
Animator's Posetool or PoseTool for short is a 3dsMax utility plugin inspired by Steve Johnson's script anipose. PoseTool's purpose is to improve the character animation in Max. It gives you a unique combination of features that helps you bring your characters to life. PoseTool is not a complicated character animation system like Ch.Studio or CAT. It works with your own objects. PoseTool is simple and offers you a creativity and big pleasure of animating.

I've always been curious about this book "The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Ollie Johnston". I've heard from more than one source that this is the Animation Bible but I have never seen it at a store.
I kinda want to see it before laying down $$$$ for it.
JBarrett
03-07-2005, 02:31 AM
Yeah, that's a standard in the animation industry. The reason you don't see it in stores is because it's been out of print for a long time, and is kinda difficult to locate. Don't quote me on this, but I think I heard some rumor about it coming back into print again. It's been a while since I heard/read that, though, and I can't recall where the info came from. Could just be from my imagination for all I know. At any rate, it's well worth it if you can track one down.

Seeing that this is mainly a 3D website/Forum, I guess the concepts of the book still apply to 3D as a medium (At least judging from what you've and the other people are saying).
I did see the book available online.
What the hell....I'll take the plunge and I'll buy it this weekend.

this is a great resource thread.
but everything is sort of jumping back and forth, and up and down.
is there a site that sort of has papers, or tuts on basic stuff, then give suggested exercises,
then talk about intermediate stuff, then suggested exercise for those, then advanced, and suggested exercise for that?
http://www.anticz.com/anticz.htm is a nice example of what i mean.

I found a really cool parkour site with tons of videos of different moves for reference.
http://www.urbanfreeflow.com/fundamentals/fundamentals.htm
The great thing about it is that they shoot from all different angles so you can see exactly what is going on. I think it is supposed to be for people to actually practice parkour, but they are just awsome for animation reference.
I'll post the dash vault that I am working on later tonight to get some feedback on it.

I'd like to get some ideas of how you all go about finding voice clips for lip sync. I don't watch a lot of movies, and I've used moviewavs.com a few times. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks.

Animation is all the rage on the web and is becoming more popular every day. Before you even begin to create animations, there are several important aesthetic issues to take into account. To elaborate, a single animation on a web page will overwhelm all static images, so placement is important.
Before you place a finished animation on your site, be aware that if you have more than one animation on a single page, the effect can overwhelm the viewer and turn them off, rather than draw them in. Also, animations that cycle endlessly can quickly become annoying. Design your animation with a finite number of loops, so that it eventually stops.
Once you've decided to create an animated sequence, you need to start with the fundamentals.

thanks for the useful tidbit...I've always wondered what effect animation would have on a sites appeal and overall appearance.

This is a great thread!
I'm part of an awesome Character Animation Community - Animation Salvation (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams)
It has some members who are big names in animation, and it's geared towards creating connections between animators from all ranks and regions! Imagine Facebook for Animators, plus a Video section similar to YouTube (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams/video.html), an "Animation Education (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams/animation_education)" section, a forum to get advice and critiques called the Mentorium (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams/mentorium/), regular Animation Events (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams/month/) (including some live events), and even a Jobs Section (http://www.animationsalvation.com/ams/jobs.html) (this will be filling up as word spreads).
Come on in and create your own account, and it's all free!
I hope to see you in there.

Greetings for 2012
Forgive me the birdy pun, but this free tutorial from character animation tutor Alex Williams, teaches you how to animate an avian flap cycle.
Following on from part one, where Alex showed you how to animate the bird flapping its wings,
http://www.escapestudios.co.uk/november-free-tutorial-animate-a-bird-and-make-it-fly-part-1/
He now shows us how to add personality, make it fly on a believable motion path, light and render it, all the while keeping your workflow simple!
http://www.escapestudios.co.uk/january-free-tutorial-how-to-animate-a-bird-flap-part-2/
I hope you find this tutorial useful and would love to see your results should you wish to upload the shot Online.
Happy animating!
thanks
