View Full Version : Favorite Plugins
Cover Slide 04-29-2005, 03:02 AM Well, I know that there are many plugins available for MAX, and while all of them are functional, I would like to know some of your guys' favorites, like ones you've used to make some really cool effects, or ones that you just cannot live without. These can be simple as one of Blur's materials, or as complex as CAT or Afterburn. But I'd rather hear about plugins that are not too well-known. Thanks for your time.

Afterburn - Sitni Sati - must have if you do anything with particles
Pflow Tool Box - Oleg - a most valuable tool extension for particles in Max
Composite Mode - Michael Spaw - great for creating cool shaders
Color Correct - Cuneyt Ozdas - very useful for coloring your shaders
Better Wind - Grant Adams - an improvement on the much outdated wind Space Warp
Brazil R/S - Splutterfishes - need I say more
Brazil Buddy - Nathan Farriss - great tool for speeding up your Brazil workflow
Anything by Blur
just to name a few... :)

Texporter - I'm still not completely sure why this one hasn't been built right into Max yet, but it's pretty essential.
Afterburn - Hard to learn, but great plugin.
PFlow Tools - It's worth is just for the Lock/Bond operator.

lightmesh - puts omnis on every nth vert of an object
texporter - get those flat mesh out of max and into photoshop
brad nobles' rig - with this rig (http://www.brad-noble.com/) and Paul Neale's attribute holder, animation is fun!

Warp texture ("WarpTexture distorts one texture with another texture")
supernoise (like noise, but cooler.....)
simcloth
random walk (cool spacewarp by blur studios)
object texture by Peter Watje
Vray
Meshtools (mostly redundant these days, but it still has useful tools like tighten/relax and outline)
Freehand tools (draws splines and stuff on the surface of objects)
blur scripts such as wire jumble
Yay plugins!

Greeble! - a must have (and also well known) - creates panels on the objects' surface. Helps you create geometry like a complex city or simply a star wars-like ship. (also used it in my 3d still for the wood planks). Just google for it.
Legolizer - by cthulu (hope I spelled that right) - transforms your objects into lego! Real cool.
To get it, do a forum search for legolizer.

scripts rather than a plugins but Time in Motion Scripts (http://www.time-in-motion.com/) by Paul Hormis (of Blur/Blizzard cloth sim fame). Essential scripts if you're doing cloth sim (Conform Wrap is great).

my favorite plugin is:
not final render
That's about it. We purchased it, used it a couple times, crashed a ton, and then we abandoned it. We basically purchased it because we wanted to be able to use the files that an outsource guy was using. We should have just told him to not use it.
nPower, for serious now, is actually the plugin that I'm swearing by. Definitely worth the money. It's really the only way to get nurbs into max. Anyone who says otherwise isn't a serious nurbs modeler.

i love final render, mostly because of the lightning fast and good GI.
Can't say anything bad about the stability... its rocksolid :wip:
I loved hypermatter, but unfortunately this isnt available anymore since Max 2.5

if so, then Plug-O-Matic rocks.
i've built up a library of custom primatives that i use on a more-than-daily basis. things from quad based basic primitave shapes, all the way to 0-level bodyparts for character creation.
but of course, Puppetshop is super high on my list.

I'm surprised not to see "Ghost Painter" by Cebas on the list.
