hahha, awesome !
ha ha that's funny....
if the animation and lighting was a little slicker it would have been awsome.
But a great spoof.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone...I'm certainly no animator and wouldn't pretend to approach Embassy's standards.
I was just desperate to actually follow through on a project from start to finish (My hard drive is littered with half-baked schemes!) So on friday 15th I started building the 2CV. Finished it on saturday then videoed my bro and his mates dancing. I animated it on the sunday (all day, 16 hours) and on monday built the carpark and city. I then tweaked for two days and by Thursday night was rendering...a solid week of render time on two PCs later it was pretty much there and I began compositing.
But to be honest, as long as it brought a smile to your face I'm happy...a chuckle is a bonus! If an animation or image isn't stimulating in some way...what's the point? The 2CV may be derivative but I prefer to see it as an affectionate homage to both the Embassy ad, and the old faithful Deux Chevaux!

Great parody idea and execution..I agree the dancing could be better, but for that kind of schedule the whole thing is really outstanding.
The ending is the stroke of genius though..awesomeness :D

Very cool looking! :)
It's impressive that you pulled this off so fast.
But....
It would be alot more interesting and I think more people would like it if you had chosen a different song, a different setting and maybe something other than dancing. When I watched it first I kinda thought it was a ripoff! The animation could use work but you probably didn't have access to mocap like TheEmbassy did. Don't get me wrong, I think it's very well done but I would have liked it 200% more if it was an original idea. I'm assuming you wanted to go in this direction since it's a citroen and TheEmbassy's is also a citroen.
Here's the original: http://www.theembassyvfx.com/citroen.html

Mechalex,
You really earn some respect here. It may not be perfect, but for a one-man-job this is really awesome. I know professionals that would love to see previz work done by one guy in one week with that quality...

Notice how I realized it was a parody? Guess not...:scream:
Let's not start a flame war, I'm entitled to my opinion. And I clearly said I liked it! ;)

Sure, I'm just trying to point out that it's kinda strange to criticize it harshly for being derivative or a ripoff when the entire point of its existence in the first place is to BE 'a version of' that original commercial, shot for shot. If it was a different car, a different scene, a different song, and not dancing, then it'd be..some random transforming car. :)
Anyway.

It's not my intention to criticize it harshly, so if I did, I apologize! :D

And i agree, the ending is spot on, you kindof expect something to happen, when it did I burst out laughing.
Top job

Thanks guys, you're making me blush...in fairness it was a hard week's work, between 9 and 12 hours a day (plus one 16) so more like a fortnight's work I guess. But I had to keep some paying work ticking over in the meantime...
I deliberately chose to emulate the original in every way but for the car, to emphasise the parody...as my housemate (JoeBananas) suggested, I could have covered the track on accordion and had the 2CV parked in a quiet, rural French town square (think Chocolat) wearing a beret and dancing a traditional Gallic jig (whatever that might be!) but I felt it would be too far removed from the original and dilute the pastiche. (And be a whole lot more work too!)
But I appreciate the comments and agree entirely with the criticism...I'm really glad the finale makes people laugh...even proper 2CV enthusiasts have responded positively!

DON'T MAKE THE DANCING BETTER. If anything it should have been worse... There is no way the old grand daddy of automobiles, the 2CV, would be 'bustin' moves like the new one.
Its dancing should illustrate its age, with the crash as the climax.
Top stuff though. A little 'new and shiny' looking but for the schedule and the man power, bloody ace.

That video alone should be a demo reel that would get you into any cg job. It's class.
OMG! i dind't expect that. :) It's even better then the previous one. But i geuss that it isn't a official commercial?

oooooooopsie. I was misinformed. I read the 'new citreon commercial' and thought it was the original studio that did it. I was like "uhh.. why'd they rehash the original commercial then junk their car?"

Thanks again for all the compliments, and for the critiques too. I'm new to the board (been honestly too terrified to play with the big kids!) though have seen some of the great stuff before, I'm really blown away by Mushroom God's Masai woman, the eyes are so vivid!
I've updated my website to add a few frames from the Pal version There's a link in the first news item to it if anyone's interested...

That's awesome, really funny parody and pretty well done as well. I'll bet that will make a nice demo reel piece!
that vid was awesome. at first i was just impressed with the animation and video editing until it did the midair transform and smash! nearly sprayed the keyboard with toothpaste
my one tiny (tiny) little crit are the arms. with just a wheel on each, they look very thin and short compared to the rest of the body. though there isn't much car body to go around, so i'll shush about it

The dancing animation is great. It looks really labored, which fits the theme of using the 2CV instead of the newer models perfectly. The end cracked me up too. Wonder what Citroen makes of this one. :D

Just a quick update: The 2CV has topped a million and a half hits, and those are just the ones I know about. Citroen UK's legal department got in touch but they were an amicable bunch and, let's face it, I did use their logo. They also deemed the tagline 'Zero technology' a tad derogatory so I removed it. They seemed happy with that though I informed them the original version was still 'out there' and there was nothing I could do about it. But I'm just relieved they didn't just send in the ninja lawyers to cut me to ribbons!
I was also asked to do some work for a London-based virals company who, after completion, claimed I agreed it was a freebie...this wasn't made obvious to me initially.
I've learned a valuable, if obvious lesson...Never trust anyone in advertising! Oh, and Lawyers are nicer than Ad men...plus they don't pretend to be your best friend. ;)
