View Full Version : Texturing video tutorial

Texturing is my weakness and I think it would be sweet if there was a video that just goes through the process. I think it would be nice to get some tips and tricks from a texturing pro. I guess I'm talking more about Hi-Res stuff as opposed to game models.

So with that said, is somebody willing to make a video of the process? Like a full walk through of a character, or at least a partial character. I don't really understand the blending process between textures (arm to torso blend... etc.) so that would be nice to see.

Plus there isn't a single video like that yet.

I made this a poll to see what kind of demand there is for a video of this type.

Absolutely. Some tutorials address UVW mapping but they are always for something like a low-poly spaceship. It has to be advanced character mapping, with max 5 UVW tools (including Relax tool) and address blend materials, different approaches to creating multisubobject materials and so on. Address morph method and also an alternative method of using modifiers and turning them off after unwrap UVW is in place. I guess it's too much to ask.

I can't imagine anyone honestly not wanting a tutorial showing this sort of thing.

Coming from a game/lowpoly background I have in my blood the need to utilize each texture as efficiently as possible :) Pah to multiple UVW's and blending, hoooraay for hours upon hours of manual unwrapping and tweaking :)

If noone steps up and makes with the video-tutorial, you can always sit back and experiment. Unwrap a primitive.. I properly mapped and unwrapped a box back when I had to learn the whole texture thing, to me it was surprisingly helpful :) But as you say, you're looking for high-poly texturing-stuff, so ah well.

I, too, would like to see such a video, though idunno if anyone can be assed to make it. At least I'd imagine a video of an entire character could take quite the time and effort to make..

Hmm,

I think you guys should explain how to make good materials from scratch in the material editor like a nice chrome/wood/metal one...I mean, where else can I learn how to make these cool materials? Did you guys just mess around until you got the hang of it?

Yeah... That would be awesome

What I meant about the blending process was the process of fixing the seams between textures. Sorry, the way I said it before was confusing.

Anyone? :D

I actually find video-tuts more difficult to follow and awkward to learn from than good old-fashioned text-and-picture jobbies, but as I don't have the time to create either I guess it doesn't much matter what I think :)

Well it could just be the upper body or even part of the upper body (arm, torso, head).
And it's really no effort at all. I make videos all the time. You just start the capture device (camtasia) and work like normal. You can capture and playback at any rate you like.

xilica: noooo, that's a different thread :D :D
Just open some materials and read the books. Open some tutorials and look at some of the materials in those too. Pay attention to whats goin on.

Iain: :( Just start the thing and do a normal job. That way you don't have to take time off specifically for it.

I'd love to, but it's so rare I actually do any personal work these days I don't much fancy working in Hypercam/Camtasia induced slug-o-vision (maybe once I get around to upgrading my PC...)

i'll be awaiting the mate/lass that will help us non-texturers become slightly better at it :D

There is one at Wolf Blade (http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/zedaxis/). Click on Learn and look for Part 2: UVW Mapping. It's been awhile since I've seen it. If I remember correctly, it's a low-poly head and helmet. What I do remember is that he pretty much does it all with Map UVW and Unwrap UVW with no manual unwrapping of the mesh.

sorry for clogging this thread...

Visualboo, what do you mean read the books?

are there any books out there for making sweet materials?

and what do you mean a different thread? are you talking about that tutorial thread at the top?

Stroker: Thanks. I'm looking for some Hi-Res stuff tho.

xilica: The... books that came with Max. :)

and what do you mean a different thread? are you talking about that tutorial thread at the top?
naa... I was just trying to keep this thread focused

I would like to step in and say I too would love to see something like this crop up here. It seems all the texturing practice I get in 3DS Max is placing pavement bitmaps onto roadways, YOHOOOOO. I really would like to see a video tut on how to texture the upper half of a high rez human model like you guys are suggesting. Start to finish. And don't zoom past any tidbits we all need to complete good texturing on our models. Like all you are saying, it might be too much to ask but I for one would find this info very valuable. Hope it happens.

Perhaps you forgot to mention that you might have to wait three days before you can download anything.

It's free though so i suppose it's fine.

You just said some key words that are bad in this thread.... "Quake3-Level Design"

Nothing against game anything, I'm just not looking for that stuff.

Well.. I can inform you all. That I will have some tutorials on my new upcomming website in 1-2 months.... and offcause I'll do some video tutorials on texturing.

I'm going to learn a freind of mine, how to texture, with these video tutorials. So whene they are done I'll post them.

Here is one trick that I recorded yesterday.
It shows the blendtrick with the Vertex Color, in this example I used it for adding dust in cornors of the walls.

(Iain McFadzen: Well it is mutch faster to do a video tutorial then a text one IMO. But it doesn't have comments etc. :( )

Enjoy :bounce:

I donno if this will help but i'll shoot away.

I'm sure am no guru in anything max at the moment (going through the 3rd round on the manuals only) but it just help me supplement my flame and inferno work.

Ok, i bought a dvd version of dv garage tutorial on texturing which i think is pretty good. It help explain the finer point in what to lookout for in all things be it a crate box, road or wall fissures. It will explain in detail on how to maximize the usage of the small square texture in our texturing prosess. btw, they are more towards 3d universe (software) but the tutorial is good for all software.

site : http://www.dvgarage.com/

then there is Michel Roger's heavenly tutorial on how to UVW. It is the best that my know of. :)
