View Full Version : Dual core CPUs with mental ray....
Arcon 04-28-2005, 02:35 AM i just read in a review (see URL below) that MR will only use 2 cores total in a dual-core dual-cpu setup, because unlike software renderers its licencing is done on a per-core basis, not a per-cpu basis. so that would mean a dual-core dual-Opteron machine would only use 2 of 4 cores. however this is with MR for Max, what would this mean for Maya?

If you are or will be using Maya 6.5 it has the satellite feature which allows you to render out to other cpus. I think if you get complete its 2 and unlimited is 8. something like that so if that was the case you should be fine
But not to sure about earlier versions, im sure they will be addressing this soon, since the dual cores have only been out for a little over a week...
MadSkillzMan: haha where have you been... amd is already talking about qad cores in 2007. But they only people offering them right now is dell and alienware, don't know if you can just but one.
If you've got deep pockets.. you can get a Opteron 8xx dual core. Obviously the first few batches are going to OEMs like Boxx and HP, but i suspect come June or so, after the 2xx DCs come out you should be able to get one fairly easily..

just checked the alias site and it says satellite supports "2 additional CPUs" (which actually means two additional cores). so is the original MRfM licence for a dual cpu machine (which would mean 4 cores total for Complete like you say), or a single cpu machine?
i own 4.5 Complete but will upgrade to 6.5 Complete before June.

We’ve added support for a new form of network rendering called Satellite. It supplements the mental ray rendering capabilities in Maya with additional rendering power provided by the CPUs of other networked computers. 2 additional CPUs are included with Maya Complete, 8 with Maya Unlimited. That is on maya's web site. I just qouted 4 wrong that was my fault. So with complete you can use a total of 3 cpu's and with unlimited you can have 9 total. The way I read it is that 2 additional networked computers not chips but other like desktops... not current cpus you have, if thay did it based on cpus onyour mother board then all those dual xeon guys would have to get two licences ( right???, alas i still use single cpu, so you guys feel free to chime in). SO I think that you can use how ever many cpu's on your current Motherboard, but with satellite you can use other cpus on the network, distributed rendering... maybe be totally off in left field on that one but thats how I read it.

Hmm... using those satilite node licenses with PCs on a network. Do you guys think it's possible to just set up satilite rendering on the local PC and point it to the loopback 127.0.0.1 and use the remaining 2 cores? Assuming a dual DC Opteron setup.

That intersting idea... I really want to play around with it... but Im going to wait till summer to get 6.5 then we'll see.
Okay looking around on the alias site I found this http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=Mulit+cpu&sp-q-1=supKbEsMaya&sp-p-1=any&sp-x-1=collection&sp-a=sp100299fe&sp-t=supKbMaya_04&sp-p=all&sp-f=ISO-8859-1
You have to habe platnum membership to read it all but this part you can see
Solution:1. mental ray for Maya is designed to take advantage of up to 4 CPUs on a single workstation. If a customer has a 4...
So you should be fine even with dual dual core muahah.
If any has platinum membership read the article and let us know

You can always call support or email them and ask..........
saves a lot of speculation.

We just had Intel in to present their roadmap up to 2007, they said that most ISVs would be licencing "by the socket" rather than by the core.
