Thanks for your time. I'm building a system (cpu, monitor, hardisk, keyboard, mouse, etc.) to continue practicing some 3D packages (demos) with the main goal of creating a good 3 minute demo reel for application. Any suggestions on parts for about $1000 budget?

I'd suggest a Mac Mini.

Otherwise you are going to spend all your time fighting viruses and Malware and never get anything done.

Besides, we all know that a Mac is the best computer for every situation and spiritual enlightenment will grace all who use it.

Not to mention that it comes with the ultimate single buttone mouse, which is far less complicated to use. It also increases production because you are never hunting for that pesky right mouse button.

It's also more holistic.........

A mini is a G4 no??? for 1000$ you can have a nice P4 3.2ghz with 2gig of RAM...
You just cant compare those setup! or a good Athlon too... (dont know about that...)

The G5 are greats but I will not advice anybody to buy a G4... render will be sooooo painfull... we talk about 3D here...

just my opinion...

there are few good deal on ebay you can upgrade yourself... adding more ram and better graphic card.

EDIT: Ho... and of course for virus, protect yourself installing AVG antivirus and Spybot (all freeware)... you should have no problem... but do it!... those spyware are really annoying!

Task casing w/ 300w
17" LCD

Athlon 64 3000 socket 939

I think you should be on buisness! they look good machines... which one i dont know cause im not yet a amd guy but if i consider im able to do everything im doing on my dual xeon on my old celeron 1.7... (except fast render of course... its why we have nights no?) you should have no problem to make a nickel Demo with that... 3d, after effects for compositing and premiere pro for sound and editing...

The 6600 is very nice... i think you will wannt the bigger screen... it help a lot... viewsonic have an excellent cheap flat black 21inch... if you can save a lil bit more... or find a used!

Sorry but those choices are awful.

First off ECS has a reputation for being cheap garbage. You have enough anti PC bias without adding fuel to it by buying the worst garbage available. Not to mention, it's socket 754 which is single channel and on it's way out.

Second board, besides being MSI which has somewhat shaky QC protocols, it uses an older, less feature rich chipset. You should be looking for boards with nForce4.

Asus A8N SLI Deluxe is a very nice board.

Not sure if there is a reason other than being "frugal" to get just a 3000+, however you want to make sure that CPU is a revision E CPU. Monarch just started selling "E" cores yesterday. Newegg has them as well. The E revision is a few tweaks and enhancements that make them very desirable.

Thanks a plenty. Will check out the recommendations and see if they're in stores here and for how much. How do you identify the Venice core on the box and/or on the cpu? What are your setups now btw (include brand and model)? If it's not too much hassle, what's amperage are in your 12v line in your PSU? What's the minimum 12v line amperage for Athlon 64s?

@MadMax

Seroius about the mac mini? ;)

anyway... You wanted system specs.. this is what I run

Dual Opteron 246
Tyan K8WE
2GB Ram
160 Gig Seagate SATA drive with NQC
Geforce 6800GT (going to get another to add to this soon..)

SilverStone ST65ZF PSU (650 Watt) This PSU is a split plane (4 12V lines)
12V1: 13-18A
12V2: 18A
12V3: 16A
12V4: 8-13A

Havnt had any trouble with the system. Most PSUs should be able to handle an Athlon64 no problem. However, most new motherboards are using the ATX 2.0 standard, so Make sure your PSU supports it. The Antec TruePower II, is a good PSU that has this standard, for example. I definately agree with MadMax on the system choices. Nforce4 is the way to go, and the Asus is a pretty good board.

Though, if mac is your thing, perhaps you should stick with a Mac. I know thats not goign to fit a $1000 budget if you want the more powerful systems tho... Its your choice.

No he wasn't. He was poking fun at the topic starter for bringing up the mac as the end all machine for 3d in a topic that asked which was better, a boxx or alienware system. A little childish but still funny.

You do realize that childish seems to be the norm around here right?

It's become increasingly clear. :) So much so that I've taken some childish things back out of the closet. ;) Check this out.

It's just a cheap $20 web cam that I used to make the images. The line across the side in the second photo is a reflection and not a scratch. :) The joy of all the wires hanging out the back of a pc. lol Isn't this much better then talking about Macs .... maybe not so much better then pc talk though.

Got a pic?

Right now mine is a stock TT01 chassis with 4WD. I want to do some upgrades in the near future. I use it more for drift driving around town. It's especially how it can be going backwards and do a 180 without changing direction of movement or speed.

Are you running gas or electric? Mines electric.

novadude

It runs on gas, an no I don't have any pics. I'll have to take it out to the track some time, but I'm too lazy to go get new batteries for the starter box or paint up a new body so it hasn't been run in a little over a year now. That combined with the hell of finding parts around here means I won't be running it much, which is a shame because it tops highway speeds (legal speeds that is :)) without any trouble.

Yeah ok, I'd have to agree with you that yours is a lot faster then mine. It also probably had a higher sticker price. :P That and since mines electric and my lease includes electricity I don't have to pay to operate it. :)
