View Full Version : How should I cool my comp?

Hey everyone, just over a month I upgraded to the following machine:

Athlon 64 3200+
2 GB Ram (2- 1GB sticks)
GeForce 6600 GT
150 GB Seagate SATA

So I was wondering and have been mulling over the possibilities of cooling this machine. Right now it doesn't run at too high of temperatures (35-40 C) but I haven't had the time to render our high poly scenes lately. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on how I should cool this computer, fans vs. watercool, and what is worth it and not worth it. Right now I just have the base fans on there, (i.e. powersupply, vid card, processor) plus a bigger fan on the back.

My price range can vary also, since obviously watercooling is better but expensive. Would this option even be worth it?

Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks everyone!

your temps are not going to go too high rendering. around 40-42c is the average on all my stuff, temps don't really get much higher even when rendering. You will be well below any thermal threshold, and well below any need for concern.

However there are options if you just have to have something fancy for looks.

i envy you i really do lol. my dually temps wer like 48/52, on a cold day! summer it was 57/59, renders threw it into the 60s, and well my dually isnt alive anymore.

However i was working on a watercooling system, for DIRT cheap, im talking about even making the waterblocks out of 6$ in parts, NO MILLING. but i dont think you even need that.

BTW ify ou wanna know about the watercooling hit me up.

that was your OLD system right? a64's are quite cool running, even with a stock HSF.

The temps that your CPU is running is just fine. But if

you insist, you should stick with good'ol fan cooling.

I would recommend Zalman copper heatsink and fan. Oh,

don't forget thermal paste!

Okay, I'll let you in on a little secret...shhh..............

Thermaltake (http://thermaltake.com/coolers/comboCool/cl-p0015tower102/cl-p0015tower102.htm)

I bought a couple of these puppies.

Not for cooling needs really. I have a side window, and a shitload of Blue LED fans. It LOOKED cool in the case.

Got it for show, nothing more. The stock fan worked just fine, but it just didn't look cool :)

u could be a true paranoid nut and lap the heatsink first

The temps on your CPU seem fine. You should

just stick with good'ol fan cooling. Try Zalman

copper heat sink and fan. That should be enough to

do the job. Oh, and don't forget the thermal paste!

I but a big fan near my PC while uncovered......This will cool everything.

the easy way is to install big fans 12cm inside the tower for fresh air and install a nice big heatsing with a 12cm fan on it for the cpu. the hard way is to search over the internet and find the extreme solution that works for you(watrcoolin, peltiers, etc).
take a look www.overclockers.com (http://www.overclockers.com)
