a friend installed sp2 on his xp pro so that he could connect a hdv camera(needed in order to run premiere pro 1.5.1). since then, whenever he tries to capture to an external maxtor firewire hd he gets a lot of dropped frames. since an hd through firewire runs in the same speed as an internal(ide, not sata) id say the problem lies with sp2. i say this because ive heard that because of the new 1394 drivers installed by sp2, there is a drop of speed of the port from 400 to about 100. anyone knows if this is true, and if so what should be done?
thanks

I dont have a problem capturing to external HD I use both maxtor and WD. The problem i do have is several times I get the dreaded windows delayed write failed. This happens a lot more with my laptop and external HDD than with desktop and external HDD. I also found that if I dont daisy chain the firewire drives, I dont get as many wdwf messages. I still get that with one drive, but the other hasnt gone offline since hooking it up directly to the firewire port on the laptop.

Not sure if this is of much use to you, but I sure would like to find out more about getting consistent performance from external firewire drives.

This is true yes, SP2 fluffs up the firewire speed

Man I had so many problems with SP2, reinstalled my comp 2 times just trying to get things to work like they did before and still no go. Now I still haven’t done the SP2 upgrade, but isn’t just a bunch of security upgrades? Like if you already have a decent firewall and antivirus software there’s no reason for it?
