Hi, which is better for 3D: a 17" LCD with 16ms, 170 degree view angle, 1280 x 1024 native resolution or a 19" CRT with 1600 x 1200 @76Hz maximum resolution, 1280 x 1024 native resolution, .25 dot pitch? Will there be distortions on this screen sizes and resolutions, for example when you draw a circle will it slightly become oval?

CRTs are still technically better, though some feel the LCDs have a more "pleasing" look, though that's debatable.

I don't think a spherical shadow-mask CRT would make any difference to the accuracy of your drawings. Most decent CRTs these days are flat, anyway. Sony's patent on the flat Trinitron tube has expired, so lots of generic manufacturers are making them now days.

The only difference I find between an LCD and a CRT is that the colors on an LCD aren't as 'true'.

I prefer a crt, but I have to admit, those diamond screen lcd's look pretty nice! :D

After having 2 x 21" Sony Trinitron CRTs sitting on my desk for the better part of a year I'd say go with LCDs with a normal aspect ratio unless you really want the colour reproduction and more flexible resolutions of CRT.

The CRT's look lovely, but they take up a boat load of space, weigh an absolute ton and need to be de-guassed and calibrated every now and again. I realise this is completely subjective, but often that's what it comes down too :D

As for the one's you've mentioned, you pretty much always want to run the LCD at the native resolution, so go for one with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, otherwise you're work will be elongated when viewed elsewhere. It surprises me the number of people that run at weird resolutions unknowingly.

Also, in addition to what people said above, what is your price range? I shopped around for a while on this same debate and what I found was that often times, you have to spend over 400 dollars to get a "decent" LCD.

If you can't afford that much, then CRT's can obviously be found for a lot cheaper value. I just bought a refurbished 21" for around 150. So for the price (and if you have room) you could purchase 2 21" CRTs for the price of a decent 17" LCD.

Just something to think about. :)

Thanks. I wish I had more budget, lol for two monitors but I can either just have one LCD or a 19" CRT and maybe use an old 14" monitor for menus and reading manuals of 3D softwares I plan to practice. They are not really for graphics work, the 17" LCD is about $280 and the 19" CRT is about $170. The LCD seems to check out well with 16ms and 70 degree view angle (I have no idea if this is good enough angle), TCO99 certified among other certifications, on the CRT it does look good too with refresh rate, with 1600 x 1200 75Hz but I dunno if .25 dot pitch is sharp enough. I'm also worried for distortions on both these monitors, It's sad if circles look oval coz' they're not the right aspect ratios for their screen size. I like that the CRT has a higher resolution but will that be readable and easy to in at that resolution on a 19"

On color reproduction, how much does an LCD deviate from the colors it should be? Is it very significant for a $280 LCD? Any percentages on this deviation?

But if you were to choose now, after researching and all that, it's good to decide on what the conscience or our guts is saying, where will you be happy to invest in doing 3D: the 17" LCD or the 19" CRT?

Well i have a 19" CRT at home and 2 19" LCD's at Work.

My view on this subject matter:

Overall make sure you get a good brand that has been used by others that say they like it. There is a big difference in a good CRT and/or good LCD and an OK CRT and/or OK LCD.
Note on colors, i love the way my colors look on my 19" CRT at home. At work my two LCD are different one is an OK LCD and the other is a good LCD. The OK LCD i don't like the colors at all. The good LCD the colors are just as good as my CRT. But then you get into shadeing of colors. When colors go from one color to the next LCD's have problem showing this so it looks blocking, CRTs would show a nice fade from one color to the other.
The bad thing about LCDs are that some come with and/or get dead pixels. And most warrenty will not replace the LCD untill you have at least 8 dead pixels. CRT do not have this problem.
Space, I would not have room at work for two CRT so the LCD's are great because i get two screens. IF you don't have much room you want to get the LCD.

Another note, Why do you not want to run the CRT at 1200x1024? I can do a 1600x1200 on my 19" but i don't like it because i can't see the text. I would recomend a 21" if you want 1600x1200.

Hope this helps some

im looking at 3 PC 17" CRTs on my mac here, and my bros got a 21" mac CRT on his PC. lol weird combo yes, but thats not the point. I like the CRT color much more than LCd. sure CRTs can strain, and LCDs are nicer on my eyes, but ive watched a fish screen saver on an LCD...its absoloutely terrble! especially movement! ...that only matters to me because i work alot with video.

i say do the CRTs. Honestly right now i kinda wish i had 3 LCDs ...but thats only because i have no room on my desk, and the temps from the monitors raise my room temps HUGE! i actually thought about cutting a hole in my wall so theyd sit back farhter lol

Hi, thanks. Is there a significant difference on the colors if you use a DVI connection against the usual Sub-D 15 pin connection? If you use a Sub-d to DVI adapter that usually comes with the card, would that be a true DVI connection?

Also, should I stay away from LCD with just thousands of colors vs. 16.2M colors? What should be the view angle of LCD for working with 3D?
