View Full Version : shag hair dynamics
hey all, ive got this little problem with a model im applying shag hair to ; when i try and use the dynamics to pose the hair or whatever, it is affected in the veiwport, but the render remains uneffected by the dynamics. its only on this model too, as it works fine on others. it just doesnt move on render. HELP! please.. ;)

Lemme guess, there's a meshsmooth involved somewhere, right? Much as I like ShagHair, it's dynamics utility sucks donkey balls. I'd suggest abandoning it forever and instead grabbing Simcloth (which is free) and using that to calculate your Shag dynamics. I've done this loads of times and it works really well.

If you select the ShagView object (the hair in the viewports) you'll notice it has several conversion options in the Modify Panel. One of them is "Convert To: Cloth Mesh". Pick that one, apply SimclothMod and, hey presto, your hair now acts like a cloth. Obviously you'll still need to tweek your cloth settings, and be warned that it'll calculate quite slowly for Simcloth (though still faster than Shag dynamics by my reckoning).
Taaaaaaaaadaaaaaaaaaaaa! :p

I salute you Iain! That is useful info.
ok, why does the meshsmooth kill it on this particular model? ive tryed it on a simple box with level 3 meshsmooth and hair only on selected faces and it is still affected by shag dynamics. what makes it tick?
hmm well it works if i dont make use of render iterations, and just have my machine slowing when its set to 2, which makes me have to display 18 k in viewport. yuk. thats plus all the other stuff. i think i'll set up the dynamics right first on meshsmooth 1 and when im happy with it i'll just switch to 2. oh, and this is pretty much my first time using shag hair, so does anyone know some good hair style tutorials? are ponytails possible?
