I would like to have the character mesh to be displayed as a wireframe and the bones I'm working on as shaded. How can this be achieved?

apply a material to your mesh and check "Wire"

what i do is use the "see-through" property on and "display edges"

the 'see-through' is intrinsic to objects while 'display edges' is a viewport property

iv'e personalized my hotkeys and forgot the default, sorry

Well, it's a high poly model and see-through slows the viewport down (Quadro 750 xgl, maxtreme). I am not sure about wireframe material since the model is fully textured and I'm not sure I can do that without any consequences. Can I?

Yes. No consequences.
The UVW and Mat IDs will remain the same (at least that's how it works for me).
When done, just change the material back.

Thanks, that looks just like I want it to, I set self-illumination of the wire to 100 and made it thin. Any other techniques are appreciated
