View Full Version : Moving points around (workflow question)

Hi !

I don’t know if a solution for this already exists but is there a workflow plugin or suggestion for improving the efficiency of following typical, everyday modeling situation?

When dragging points around in a model, points very often share one of the same X,Y or Z-axis positions as a neighboring point. In the following example, the bottom-right point needs to be moved to the same X-axis position as the top-left, currently selected point.

By copying the World-X-axis value of the top point and then pasting it onto the corresponding X-axis value of the bottom-right point, it pops neatly into the same World X-axis position as the one above. Ok, so far so good.
However doing this for hundreds of points in a complex scene can take time, especially when using the old Ctrl-C – Ctrl-V technique. This also forces you to keep one hand on your keyboard at all times.

It would be great if the coordinate window could be enhanced with a temporary copy / paste memory bank feature allowing any of the three X,Y,Z world-coordinates of one point to be copied and stored. The stored coordinate could then quickly be pasted over / onto the X,Y,Z coordinate of your choosing on the next next point who’s position you want to affect.

Something like this…

Any thoughts..?

Have you tried Fabian's CPPP?
CPPP = copy past point position. It should help your workflow!

Hi Ed,

I tied CPPP but it doesn't really do the trick because it copies all three X,Y,Z coordinates, placing the target point at the identical location as the source point.
Thanks for the tip though. :)

Have you checked out the Entagma AlignPoints plugin?

http://www.entagma.org/

This lets you "grab" a specific vert, (which copies it's location) and then lets you select one or more verts and have them align either on x, y, or z. (Or any combination of those):

You still have to select the axis you want to align to, but at least you don't have to keep copying and pasting.

Woah.....
Thanks Eric!
This is the best one sofar.
Got it docked next to the coordinates window now.
