Julez4001 10-04-2002, 11:25 PM Some ppl said taht having tris or quads is the general guide for converting polys to Subs but when i import obj files into maya for conversion ..its just gives me fits. Whats the other rule guide?

number of polys... you should be able to SubD an unsmoothed proxy, but if you try to SubD an already smoothed base object, you will likely run into trouble.

2 major problems with turning a poly object into a sub-d object. 1 is the number of polys both in input and in output (I know this sounds strange given the nature of maya's sub-d but apparently it is indeed important)
2 input geomotry MUST be manifold. (read the docs on what this means)
To help fix this first run a clean geometry by opening the options dialog and click the nonmanifold radio box. This should fix any manifold issues.
Second when you run a poly-Subd conversion open the tool dialog and up the number of polys (the default is 5000) I normally set it to 20,000 this generally gets even a relatively complex object into subd.
To help later on with rendering go to the attribute editor under the tessolation options and tweak the tesselation. I often set it to Adaptive and 2 with the default being 4. This will help if there are render errors as I have had occasions where the renderer belches out an error upon attempting to render complex sub-d objects because of tesselation. (I am learning to despise the Maya renderer because of crashes with high geometry scenes)
Hope this helps,
