When you use extrude on an edge of a cube this will be your result.

Okie dokie but what if I didn't want it that wide, or maybe wanted it wider but not as long, No problem simply hold down CMD (CTRL on PC) whie you are extruding to control only the width of the extrude, and Shift to control the length. The best thing is you can do this anytime in the extrude, so you could extrude an edge and while pulling it out realize its not wide enough, press CMD (CTRL) and make it wider, then you realise the whole extrude nees tobe a little bigger, release CMD (CTRL) and keep extruding, then you realise its almost right but a little too long, press shift to shorten it a bit without affecting the width, and then release the mouse button and your extrude is finished. Man what control we have while modeling with edges eh.

Now some of you might be surprised with the result of the edge extrude, its a weird triangle rather than simply pulling out an edge like Arndt's Edge extrude plugin does.

This is for a safety reason. If you select an edge hold down ALT and then try extruding, what happens? it deselects your selection. Why is this? to prevent you from making an illegal poly. Whats that? I'll show you,
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/r8tips/ee3.jpg
this is what is considered an illegal mesh, we have three polies using the same mesh, no this is fine as is, but for subdivision, this is worse than any tri ever was. Look at the image on th right to see it subdivided, pretty ugly right, notice the gap between the sphere and the circle which are only joined at the points. not too pretty. So basically they put a safety measure in there.

You CAN still do edge extrudes on a model just like Arndt's edge extrude plugin. Simply make sure you are creating a legal mesh. like a cube with no top. Select an edge on top hold down alt and extrude, and there you go just lke Arnst's, but wait there is more, before releasing the extrude, release the alt key and now you can control the angle or basically rotate the extruded adge any angle around the original edge. Notice right now its snapping in fifteen degree incriments? no problem lower the snapping in the active tool dialogue.
