Texture painting tips:
- When painting organic textures, use soft edged brushes on low opacity.
- Avoid perfectly repeating patterns.
- Build up your tones gradually instead of splotching them onto the canvas.
- Use lots of variations of your tones instead of sticking to flat areas of the same colour.
- When painting bump maps, ease the areas around wrinkles, spots, etc with varying shades of gray instead of having harsh lines or dots on plain gray.
Shading tips:
- Use reflection mapping instead of specular mapping for highlights.
- Your lighting is essential in order for your shading to work.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head this late in the evening :)

Thanks for getting this going Leigh!!
Ok so since i started this i better add a few of my own.
When observing objects to texture from real life. Ask yourself why the colours are the way they are across the surface and what influences them. Try break everything down and then rebuild it slowly adding one subtle effect at a time. In 3D we have to build each effect to get the final result. So Observe Observe observe!!
Stay tuned more to come
