View Full Version : New AMD dual core! Is this the ultimate CPU for Cinema 4D rendering?
mauves 04-25-2005, 10:10 AM Hello, just thought i'd share this with the forum. I didn't see this topic yet in the forum I think. Sorry if I'm doubleposting.
I was thinking to upgrade my Pentium 4 to a Xeon multi proc system. Doing a bit of research I stumbled on these benchmarks. I am amazed at these CB numbers! I might go the AMD dual core way.
Any thoughts?
cheers

whoa... cinebench score of 1000+... that definitely kicks my dual Xeon. Amazing.
According to pricewatch.com, the Opteron 275 costs $1305, which is not bad at all in my book. Any idea how much a mobo for it costs?

looks cool, just make sure it's cooling system is up to scratch.
AMD's are generally better and faster than Intels for the money, but have a tendency to overheat whilst rendering and hang or crash a fair bit.
where as Xeons are more expensive and not as eccenomical on the whole, but realy overheat and crash compaired to AMD's.
i run both and personally prefer a Xeon

Yes, this is the way to go, just wait a bit so the prices get a bit lower...

These days AMD are actually cooler than equal pentiums.
Xeons on the other hand are I guess more stable, but they are loud as hell if you use the default coolers (they are too small and the vent speed is to high). But getting a better cooling system is another problem couse Xeon motherboards tend to chuck dual CPUs very close together so you cant mount any standard coolers on them..

From what I've read they should work on a regular 64bit AMD socket, so not too expensive. You'd only need to update the bios and drivers. But don't take my word on it, I'm new to AMD and still quite new to the pc universum. I'm a mac guy who bought a pc for Cinema 4D.

From what I just read, you need a Socket 940 motherboard electrically capable of supporting an Opteron 2.4 Ghz, and a bios upgrade. If that's true (not my area of expertise either), that puts the cost of such a system at roughly:
$1305 for the Opteron 275 dual core
$250 or so for a suitable socket 940 mobo
am I seeing this right? $1,500 for a 1000 point CB score seems damn good. That's way faster than your average dual Xeon.

well if you read the specs this is not ONE amd cpu but TWO!
so this is 2 dualcore cpus! then i alos makes sense to have a 1000*CB.
but you can expect similar from a dual dualcore xeon. just that amd seems to be faster to release them, which is a plus for AMD:-)

I just had a chance to try a Dual Core Pentium EE 3.2 GHz. Performance in CINEMA was comparable to a dual Xeon 3 GHz. The AMDs should be a bit faster due to faster connections but in general dual core CPUs are realy made for 3D and CINEMA takes full advantage of it. Interestingly HT on the Pentium EE compensated completely for the usual dual factor (1.8), i got a factor of 2.12. With DC AMDs the factor will most likely be 1.8, just like with any dual system, but with a higher single performance to begin with.

yep. btw lllab, you are right. The review was a bit misleading in that it kept referring to 'the Opteron 275 system' in the benchmarks, when the test machine was in a fact a 2 x Opteron 275 dual core CPU.

still nice!
i cant wait to get one. but i think it is good to wait a liitle more, cause at the beginning the new stuff is ridiculous expensive.
guess i will go for the xeon though, most of my newer machines are intels, to keep them the same cpu style. and it will take some moths until we get dualcore xeons.
but as srek said dualcore is our friend:-)

Stability and heat shouldn't be a problem as long as you have a good enough cooling solution, no matter
which platform you choose.
