Hi all!

Ive been inspired by so many artists here 2d and 3d so i gave my butt a kick and get a wacom.
Ive been also reading theories about color and how to get the form right in 2d painting and put it to a practice here....

I trace the form from the photograph but i didnt use the color picker since i want to practice in getting my own palette....(if thats the correct way to say and do it.) And the color mix on the base of the speaker is not that good.

I place a piece of paper on top of my wacom to get the paper texture....wacom surface is way too slippery for me.

Stroke and color practice...hehehe

i hope i can get comments from the gurus from this site. :)

I think you are already quite good at drawing digitally... good mixing of colors, and nice strokes for a first.
Also good color choices, and great that you are trying to pick colors manually :D

I like it.. do some more.. perhaps try to not trace, and leave out the "lineart" that comes when you trace. Just define the shapes only with color and shadow :D

Thank you Swoop....its an encouragement to me...
I jumped to do an update as soon as I read your reply!:D

Yeap there is a universe can be done about my stroke...if i were to leave the 'lineart' on, it'll be ugly....maybe i'll post it when i gets a lil' bit bettah...ehhehe
Thats y i have to put a paper over my wacom coz its like doing it on paper instead of 'skating' on the tablet with ur pen! :p

Here's some update....trying my hand on detailing...se how far my patience can get me:p

I dont know why i posted this. just ignore

Its a color practice that i did. I trying out hue, saturation and value.

And on the other pic, ive sketched out the basic colors for my composition...But how do you determine the number of values in the pic like some people have done?

I guess i hafta start with doing it in B&W before moving to colors, as most artists here starts with.

Understanding how to get the form by playing with values before getting to hue....hehehe

O well...

A tutorial from Craig Mullins sets me off....

I started with dark value....working through midtones....then higher values.....
very good exercise to eccentuate the form in 2d painting....

Still so much to learn abt colors.

I wanna try my color toning out to i sketch and color it by refering to the original photo....but ive learned not to use the color picker.

I'll try to acquire the hues and values myself.

Well here goes....

Alot of correction on the anatomy but in the end still its two different person with two different body built. the original girl just touching gently the shoes but the sketch is really pulling her heels and she got obviously longer neck than the original...

...but im skipping that part coz this i wanna try coloring....

2B pencil on copy paper....approx 1 hour

This is the original gal...

I love model shots coz the lighting resembles a painting so much ....a kind of composition style that i like, one properly positioned light source...accentuate the form and all.

Maranello go right ahead posting, this is a forum, it's healthy to get your thoughts somewhere past the front of your own mind or you own computer. I'm fine with what you're learning and sharing with us, I'm seeing improvements. Just try to spend as much time as you feel is deserved for each study and you've got yourself in a healthy pattern developing.

Keep on going!

Some progress....painting the dark tones first......then some midtones....

I try not to follow the form n lighthing too much....since the my sketch is way off the original anyway...Im trying to learn shadow and light first...eheheh

Ah after so long i finally got time to get back to this one.....I did a little detailing on her and i put my understanding on color and values to test....I dont want to carry too much similarities to the original photo coz i want to have my own value, palette on the painting....

Im a newbie so be easy on me....:D

Yeap....i couldnt agree more....skin tone looks dead....

Here are some minor updates....the waist line looks humungous on the previous ones....so i trimmed it down....and added a pink hue to the skin....

i dunno if the wacom works with photoshop but why you dont set the basment color on that art and the you just use some tools to make it more clearer.

Anyway if you just used the wacom its pretty accurate for now.

Yeah doode...i get wut u mean....I actually started with the dark values that has been set as the base....then working up to mid values and then high values.... In term of cleanliness, i think i need more practice...like any other stuff lol!!

Im just using the standard brush and playing with opacity and pressure sensitivity. I think its not time for me to use custom brush yet.

Do i get you right, man?

TryForce
05-29-2005, 01:42 PM
well i think you understood me half.

i didnt meaned anything with brushes at all. I mean... why you just dont place the basecolors on this art and then u use in Photoshop Blur/sharp/dodge/burn and staff.

thats what i mean.

I don't like using that way as i find you have less control over the colour. I prefer doing it colour by colour , i find it to be much more fun but more time consuming.

TryForce
05-29-2005, 01:56 PM
well im a lazy guy so i dislike to make me everything harder then i could do it.
also its not wrong to do color by color. But you can finish if faster with the blur tool... you can use a normal color and then a 25% darker color... then use blur tool and you will have a great result instead to place each color itself and then get a "artistic" view.

hmm i sort of like the painterly look that you had going before...however, i know you're still working but if the rest is gonna look like this you should try smoothing it out more then.

Hey guys, thanks a bunch for the feedbacks!! I really appreciate it!:D

TryForce - Ok now i get what u mean finally. Yeap...actually i just tried that out (laying the base colors and blur them out to mix them) ...and i kinna like the effect but its a bit flat coz i love to see, well almost, the stroke (well not evrywhere....) ..like an artistic filter is PS.:wise:
Blue demo - Yess!! Fun! thats why we do this rite!?:bounce:

A minor update....

We all know all this while there is something wrong with the arm......the elbow location is not aligned with the inner elbow...so i fixed that and some shading issues also on the arm.

I liked working on the chest area because it is interesting mixing colors there to indicate greenish illumination coming from the shirt. It makes a painting alot more lively (i think) if you include some illumination...it also characterise the material property of the shirt as well.....as only shiny or glossy material can reflect color like that (i think).....

An puny update on the chest area and a bit detailing there as well....Got rid of the boring and gloomy BG and leave it white and let my imagination go wild....hmmmm...wut can be done.....http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/shrug.gif

Nazirull
05-31-2005, 03:56 AM
I think so. More contrast this way compared to the gloomy one earlier..hmmm...thinking of an outdoor scene, or a fantasy one...but...anyway....back to it later...

great lips...eyes are a bit large...but who cares, I shouldn't be talking...I think you need to work in more cool colors and brown/yellow/peaches...I prolly already told you about enayla's skin tut...it hasn't quite worked for me yet but *shrugs*...and don't worry about the 6 hrs...sometimes it takes me that long too, just to think of something to draw x.x;;

can you explain how you did the lips?

ceresz
06-07-2005, 09:40 PM
yep yep, nice lips, the rest is nice to but i got to say you did the lips the best.

Nazirull
06-08-2005, 02:21 PM
I think the lips alone is great....looking at the face as a whole...u see a concave, moonlike face...with a squashed nose...(i hate to do noses...maybe manga influence, again..lol).

Thanks for liking them guys! im flattered by ur support.

This is how i did the lips...

http://img82.echo.cx/img82/8828/facelips1jz.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

First I just sploched around that lips area to get a nice shape. Use a lusher, red color than the skin.

When you finally got the shape, u need to play with the form of the lips. On mine, I put a shade of purple (thanks, Enayla) as shading at the upper lips (3)to indicate its depth and the light is coming from above.

I kept the tones of the lower lips as it was ..or did i made it lighter. Anyway...u can just play and undo if it sucks. And since the light is coming from above, and if you want to make your lips looks shiny, naturally, do a highlight with a bright color (2)....the stroke of it should follow the crooks (i dunno wut to call it) on your lips.

Then I gave a little dark line in between the lips to accentuate depth further....(1)

Finally, I created highlights at (4) to make the whole lips pop out a little bit more while keeping (5) dark coz its below the nose....( i hate doing nose...yeah i told you before already.)

and of course,

Linda Bergkvist (http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery) and check the 'thoughts on skintones' and since we are on it 'lip tutorial' (you can just purge all the things ive written above....sucks  ) and 'nose tutorial'.

move the bottom half a bit up, or the nose will be too long IMO. i think the eyes themselves are a bit too large still, but it has that deepset look that is very attractive! (i have nothing actually against large eyes) with lovely blue eyes like that, she should have a different color eyeshadow or at least eye shading! either way, 1000000000x better than i can do - this will turn out very nicely. do you do art normally or study it?

Nazirull

Yeap I agree with you. But too lazy to do that. (What a useless ****** am i??)
Thanks for the compliments hpslashluvr....i think you are doing better than me at being consistant...I am not....can seem to stick with one sketch and ***** finish it! ehehheh...

Still so much to learn........

What color you think would suit as the eyeshadow?

Ive never studied art in my life (formally that is). But i study it as a subject when im online and when im out at the bookstores. Ive been pasteling on sugarpapers drawing people and stuff...thats all. now im going digital coz u really doesnt have to buy colors and papers...

it sort of looks more like a man now. not a man man, but like one of those adrogynous (sp?) ppls that you can't tell...i think it may be the brows. also the brows would be lighter imo if the hair was so fair. maybe you are watching anime too but her chin is awfully pointy...maybe you didn't change it but it looks that way.

Nazirull

A small update....but Ive learn some tricks creating custom brush from one of Enayla's tutorials. Man, looking for her tutorials are like a treasure hunt....its everywhere! But it has been fun and I think an added knowledge about the brush is important in my painting vocabulary.

Here is that link to Enayla's brush tut (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=239810&page=1&pp=15).

Loulu79

Harsh ones you say...okay....

*The blonde haired girl needs a nose. Go away from the anime style a bit...and be brave to ventrue into that realm a bit (yes, most anime styles have noseless characters).
*Same blonde haired girl needs redness around the corners of the cornea...
*Hair....like everything else...has layers that make it more realistic. Therefore I suggest more various blonde locks in her hair...the ones closest to the scalp dark...the ones hitting light, lighter...and a few darker blond and lighter blond...Why don't you look at real life photos of models with blond hair and see for yourself.

Now the other pict...I can't crit on the face because she doesn't have one yet...but...I challenge you to make it as realistic as possible...You have that potential.

Good luck.

I bought the d'artiste book on matte painting...i found it very inspiring indeed and have been practicing since. Especially the tutorials by Dylan Cole. He's technique and workflow is very easy to pick up and understand, even for a guy that have a basic Photoshop knowledge. He explains the reason behind most of his actions that makes u understand better why are you doing things when youre finally doing it.

So here goes....one of many to come...i hope

Always being tempted to do this piece from my sketches earlier. I think i getting comfortable with coloring and using my graphire3. This is due to huge amount of reading posts in CGtalk and tips from experts all around. Im really owe alot to you guys. To be able to do this although its not much means alot to me. Thanks.

I am planning to finish up this piece (like wut i said about my other works). Achilles has always intrigues me as a mythical figure. In this painting, im trying to show Achilles and his quest for immortality. As he realises the impenetrable wall of Troy is not easy to breach. But his graps on his spears are not easing down. He is going for it...immortality.

No ref..around 3 hours.

Edit: Please mind the anatomical imperfections since this is just a stroke and color practice...thank you.

hpslash....thank your for dropping by......Yup...the leg is a teeny bit long....and here are some gesture studies i made...rather backwards tho...(Sorry Rebeccak):D

But Ive found the dynamics of the pose i guess...C n c is always welcomed. And i sorta like flip it coz the previous Achilles was left-handed....I dunno which one is correct but the right hand would be ok...i guess...

Nazirull

hpslashluvr - Yeah....the dead center look is intentional and i think only goes to gate..but Achilles is slightly off center. His body curve and the swing of his arms is pointing away and into the composition....i counter that with the curve from the splashing waves.

This curves vs the monolithic, dead-center gate of troy i think can create a subtle contrast..i hope.
My real intention is to come up with 'iconic' type of composition. Thanks!

sh@ke - Hey man...great to see you dropping by and dont just drop by!...drop some precious tips!!

i sort of liked the colors in the first one better but i know you're going for a stormy look...but the new one just needs some light parts too...maybe a part in the clouds or lighting.

somehow achilles looks funny just standing there so close to the water, almost like he's gonna fall off. but i can't really say that you should change the pose...maybe you just need to break up the monotony of the rocks with some moss or littler rocks/sand - but of course those are details and you haven't done that yet.

nooooooooooooooooooooooo!! i liked the stormy look better...it seems more suited for the oceany theme. maybe mix it and make it sort of dawn-y looking. mostly i think you're just missing the wet look to those rocks in the foreground.

BrutalMonk
01-15-2006, 12:54 PM
To be honest, i must say I better luv the blue-ish concept, it has a bit nicer atmosphere.
About the concept i think if you add a few pixel to the upper part, to accent the height of the gate would be cool. And maybe the rocky part of the picture is too long, the half would be enough...

But yours the decision! Keep it up!

Loulu79
01-15-2006, 03:12 PM
Achilles look as if .... he's not standing...I think he's....on the verge of ...of...of....of...um..."pushing off...to the next move."

You know...like he's between mid-air...and standing. It's like the camera shot him in this awkward motion.

Either you have motion blur to give us that hint...which will be one of your finishing touches...or give him a stronger...more obvious pose...

I like it so far...and you're just putting the basic necessities first...before you put a lot of detail. That's very smart...now I should do that to mine....when I get that chance.

Darn! :banghead:

01-16-2006, 05:36 PM
zng-Y - Thanks friend! Ive moved Achilles up to center abit...thats y he lost his footing on the rocks and looks akward...other reason is i havent really found his real pose yet....Cant work on it yet.....arrghhh..!

Rebeccak - OMG....Rebeccak?? On my thread?? Inviting me personally to join the OFDW??? Of course I'll join! Err....depends...on the Master Copy......my girlfriend forbids me from painting nude women....

hpslashluvr - Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss!! I finally change it back to the stormy look with abit of hue and saturation adjustment....Personally i like this updated version too...like you said it suits the oceany theme...and i think i gives more color contrast between the foreground and the background....More comments n tips please!:bounce:

Brutal Monk - Good to see you here, friend....i remember you for your early encouragement on this thread....:) I agree with you totally....the sky seems to be squashed into the picture....few pixies wont be enough i guess...i need to rethink the framing....Thank you the comments! More please!:bounce:

Loulu79 - Whoa...i think thatd be kewl....capturing an in-between-move in a 2d painting...neah....i rather do a still....a motion blur would look too comicy...perhaps. But who knows....i might accidently try it and find it to be ok! I dont plan these things so i 'll never know!!

Keep ye snail moving Loulu79! Im anxious to drop a line in ur post!:bounce:

Yup...thats intentional...the gates of Troy is a static so-called stage for this scene and i want the only moving thing is Achilles and Hector (yup...that small guy i added on the mid-right rock)

Quick! to your thread and update before u become a full-flesh snail!!

This is an update.....(obviously)...I detailed and color corrected the rocks further....put a wet look to it....repair the splash.....move hector...reduce the fog near the middle line....tab achilles a tad to the left....stretch the sky....change the overall mood....and add detail to hector and move him....

Hope you guys are enjoying this...more to come!!

make the rocks more jaggedy!!! i stilll don't really get a wet look offa the rocks but really that is something that you'll prolly work on later.

i prolly wouldn't even have noticed the guy on the rocks (hector?) without you mentioning it. maybe make him just a wee bit more noticeable.

hpslashluvr - I think makin the rocks more jaggedy on the foreground might take away the focus from Achilles....I intend to emphasize more on his heels since it is his weakest part.

I read the myth that said the Gods wants to make him an immortal and dip him in the river Styx.....but the Gods forgotten his heels because they held him by it. So only his heels in mortal and i wanna capture this.

Does the rocks looks wet now? :D

I dunno where to put HEctor honestly...we'll just see....:)

But here goes....the fishy creatures in the foreground is the tetrapods, the first fish that develop a hand-like limb on the journey to the land. The evolution goes from there (depicted by the bluish neon lines) to a form of a modern man in a conductors' suite, orchestrating destruction to its own evolution journey.

Hey Nazirull
just seen your thread, great stuff, but I have to say I think you've strayed a bit from your original intent. You might want to get back and focus on your line and colour rather than trying to produce more final pieces.
I only say this because the idea is a great one, full of discipline and artistic merit. Well done.

Nazirull, your dedication and effort are to be commended. I thought you might be one of the "serious ones" from your first post about getting your Wacom.

You have one major drawing flaw which was evident from your first piece, and is evident through today, that slows your progress, and hinders your development. No matter how good you become, this one poor technique will keep you that little bit from being better. It is like choosing to walk hunched over and stooped, rather than tall and confident. It is the making of short, hesitant, unsure, strokes to create your outlines and shapes. I saw it in your first tracings.

Even now, you are creating some very precise shapes, but spending so much more time and effort "chicken scratching" them into existence, rather than drawing a simple smooth line with one stroke.

The last statement is the reason you need to put a piece of paper over your Wacom ~ to slow you down. You need to learn to draw faster, instead. That is the digital freedom that awaits you, the ability to confidently make a very quick, yet very accurate line to define whatever you want it to. That same skill will allow you to paint Shapes with 2-3 strokes that will be fluid and dynamic, conveying not only the shape, but the personality of the artist.

SEE the shapes as you paint. Paint your shapes with as few strokes as possible. Think simplify. Paint the largest shapes of color first, as shapes, not strokes. Then work to paint the smaller shapes with one stroke, not three or four. At first, you may find your perspective to be thrown off, with shapes too close together, or too far apart, but your eye will start to observe the shapes better, and perspective will improve.

If you can just scratch less and stroke more, you will find your speed and accuracy will improve by leaps and bounds. You have a really nice style to your work, with a kind of Art Nouveau feel to it, even the spaceships. I think if you can get your strokes to match your style, you will see some great works.

Great advice.

I DO hesitate alot. Even with traditional media (pencils and pen) i tend to alot of strokes to get the desired shape.

I tried putting paper on my wacom last time. I dont know why i quit that. Time to put it on again.

More practice time!

Thank you for your insights on my work and to thread the pages.

No paper. Learn to draw FREE, and fast, and be confident of the long, gliding strokes you will make!!! You will be hesitant at first, your strokes won't be too smooth or even at first. That's okay. You will NEVER improve until AFTER you get past the sketchy, hesitant phase.

I WAX my plastic overlay, and buff my stylus tips to make them glide over the Wacom with as little resistance as possible.

Oh...If thats the case, then that means over these years my strokes are not improving! Im getting no better even without the paper. I was thinking with paper, it can slow me down and produce more confident and sure strokes! lol

I'll keep on doing it without then....looks like i have to do more practice.

Great updates, great progress, you seem to be loosing that "chicken scratch" flaw Cybr was talking about. Seeing many bold and unhindered strokes with these new ones...keep it up! Btw, how exactly are you kicking your own ass...cause i'd like to know for myself =)

Nazirull
08-06-2008, 04:11 AM
Rabid1 - Thanks man...if CybrGfx didnt point out that 'chicken scratch' issue, (i still have that by the way). I wouldve wondered wut the hell is wrong (amongst other things) with my sketches.

Its pretty easy to kick ur own arse....sketch it, print it, stick it nicely to a wall and give it ur best shot. LOL
M kidding...well i looked back thru the pages of my thread and thought that i shouldve been further with it. Many progress were hold back by procrastination n laziness, although i have everything and adequatly equipped. So there should be no excuse not to produce.

A kid, a magazine vendor nearby my place had this passion that drive me forward. He is a poor kid and over these years i never fail to see him do sketches of his favourite chinese comics...and pretty damn good and consistant with it. And he had only scrap paper and a ball pen! So wut excuse do I, the one with the wacom and licensed sofware, and all the resources in the world within reach, have not to produce? Or at least try my best to? None...there shouldnt be...so thats how.

Abt the piece above, I think the hesitance is still there in my strokes...u can see that. I refered to movie screen capture and use grids for easy refs. And I do feel a little bit constrained with the grid restriction....Its like plotting, rather than being natural with ur hand-eye coordination, which is wut i supposed to do...
Plus, my brush and color selection thru out the stages of the painting is still all over the place. I think im giving it a second try.

Thats another thing im lacking. I hate to comeback to my piece and do it again...i simply hate it but i think in order to improve i just have to do it.

Thanks Rabid1 for dropping by...see at DSF!

NR43
08-06-2008, 07:12 AM
Well, perhaps you're not gonna like what I write now, but I must do so:

Stop using grids!

I know that you are now probably thinking "wtf" but I think at this point, where you have a decent understanding of light, color and value composition and all that, this grid is holding you back.

Yes, your sketches will look a lot less accurate.
And yes, it will feel like you are dropping 10 levels back and you will feel bad about it in the beginning

But accuracy isn't the most important thing, it is actually not more important than SCHWUNG (or FLOW).

About 2 years ago I stopped using grids and I can tell you that once you start seeing progress in accuracy, the feeling is AMAZING! I felt really FREE and liberated.
Try it, resist going back to using the grid if you're not doing a commissioned piece where accuracy is demanded) and you should get the same feeling after a while

Keep inspiring!

Nazirull
08-06-2008, 08:14 AM
Please DO write more stuff that i dont like abt my stuff here please! Only by that, i will know where i can improve! :scream:

Lol...honestly i didnt know why i used grid last nite. Probably because theres a grid brush in Matthias brush pack...lol. I have NEVER used grids before...EVER, for the same reason that uve pointed out, spot on.

Unless something that requires accuracy....but i cant think of any? An exact likeliness in portraits perhaps? That would be downright boring though. I would like to do my version of someone if they ask me to do their portraits...like, how Picasso would draw George W Bush?? :scream:

Great work man! Although I might want to add to you that you need to practise more on the basics, anatomy/perspective...
You kinda started right in with color and some random things before starting with only cubes, spheres, perspectives...
