Snow Fox 04-24-2005, 03:52 AM Hi...
Can anyone give me a tip on how to make textures in photoshop using dirt maps, brushes, pics, and so on..I Couldn't find any clear tutorial and I'm just :banghead: I don't get what I want. I have seen 3d total tutorials but nothing. I make a mess when combining layers. Can anyone help me please..with tutorials instructions techniques WHATEVER....
My idea is to use them later in Max.

Im in the same boat as you. I really cant make realistic textures in PS for my models. I can model fine, but then when it comes to making the textures, that's when it makes my model look like crap.

in my experience, look others' texture first, than search stuff as much as you can.
composite in ps,more use layer composite,it's crucial.

It depends on what kind of textures you need.
Do you need some organic textures? Try taking a photo as a basis and working on from there. Don't have a photo? Try some stock photos you can find in many places, like stock.xchng (http://www.sxc.hu/).
And if you need more tutorials, ask Google, there are tons out there.
Here's an example: http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-tutorials/Textures-and-backgrounds

The Gnomon Workshop has an excellent texture library with some training on photocollage, they also have a Photoshop DVD that has some of that as well...depends on how serious ya are about learning it... good luck!

Some good stuff here (http://www.dvgarage.com), under the "Free Instruction" section. You need to register, but it's free.

it's funny how - when you're trying to do realistic images - the textures matter a lot of course, but the lighting and surface properties (bump + shininess) of your objects are just as important
(which is why this question is hard to answer - it's a complex issue)
