very nice looking, i like the material. especially the green ring.
my one crit. the leg on the left side (the closest one) there's a gap between the "thigh" and the "calf"...hehe...in other words there's no knee.
sorry, couldn't think of a better way to describe it.
:bounce:
very nice.

Thx aldog, your absolutely right about the gap, finished the modelling of the legs now and even rigged them ;)
As for the lens here's an update (unfinished)

THat's an excellent model of a lens. spot on.
I'm not sure if it fits the bot though.
seems a little...intrusive...i guess.
i could be that it's sticking out to far, or maybe the mat.
dunno.
I'm guessing the things above and below the lens are a light, and perhaps a motion sensor.
i like the look of those.
did you darken the metal material? it looks good.
brasco
04-23-2005, 09:36 PM
thx aldog,
Yeah lens is quite big on it i spose, will revise it and experiment, would a similar metal tex work u think?
yes I darkened the metal tex.
I'm pleased that u saw the two sensors as sensors, thought they were a bit too much like lenses, gonna change the tex for them to make it more obvious.
Cheers again.
Jon
PS: any1 know where i can host movie files for free?
aldog
04-23-2005, 09:59 PM
I think if you pulled the lens back a little (as in, into the body of the bot) then changed the tex to one that's slightly darker than the bot is. it might work out.
I'm glad your glad i saw the sensors as senors (heh)
if you ever did an animation of this - or perhaps even a still - you should make a red laser come out of the bottom sensor. perhpas one of those flat triangle shaped ones. i think that'd look mighty nifty.
excellent work genises

god that looks great.
the sticker looks kind of funny, but i don't know if it'd look good without it.

Hi :)
Added a flash but still needs loads of work to fit it. moved the optics around a bit to test a different combo, see what you all think.
I've rigged it, shown below, hopefully animateable(?) soon
@aldog thx again man. gone and taken that sticker off, might put a similar more subtle 1 on later

http://img235.echo.cx/img235/839/robot089ch.jpg
This is coming along nicely. My only crit so far, is that the rectangular flash does not fit the design of the bot that well...placement of it is fine, just needs to fit the contour of the rounded area that it's in. A rounded rectangle, where the top two corners are closer together than the bottom ones might look nice.

my thoughts exactly 3dg.
I can't think of anything to critique.
it's looking beautiful.
**edit**
ok, i guess i can think of one crit.
on the first picture you posted in the last post...you posted...
the leg that's the middle of the 3 visible legs is what my critique is regarding.
it seems that it's extended to far down, as if it's beginning to walk down a stair or something to that effect.
that's about it.
:banghead:
sorry if i'm confusing, i seem to be having a problem with...what's that called again...oh yah, TALKING.
...
**edit2**
hehe, i looked back up at the picture and decided that that looks like it's "sexy" leg. OW OW!!

I believe he is just showing that the legs have been rigged and are working.

Hi guys thx very much for the crits.
@3dg - i'll adjust the flash it is far too retrofit for the design :)
@aldog - hey man, 3dg's right the leg's just rigged and i think because the view obscures his footing it gives the illusion his leg is too low :)
thx again update soon.
PS. we're on rather different timescales (and i'm betting your weathers better than here!) so there might be a few updates by the time u see them so please feel free to crit all of them.

Thx _dd.
Here's an update just fixed the flash and it's tex, see what u guys think.
@aldog: lol ;P
I'm thinking of making the ribbed leg part plastic like as it would seem more believable what do u think?
http://img161.echo.cx/img161/106/robot095hj.jpg
this one makes the flash look detached but it's just higly reflective so sky is reflected
http://img104.echo.cx/img104/2535/robot100zg.jpg
say cheese! (omg that is cheese!! ;P) (ok maybe a little ott with the flash :))

aldog
04-25-2005, 07:47 PM
OMG that's marvelous.
the way it's lifting up that leg looks so life like. creepy!
i don't think making the legs look plastic would be believable, there's got to be quite an amount of weight inside the bot (for all the camera's needs) I think leaving it metal-esque as you have it looks good.
I was wondering though, in that last post did you change the tex on the side of the flash?
in your 2nd to last post you have a close up of the flash and it's a very shiny metal, i like that one alot.
I'm guessing it's the angle that the bot is at that makes it look less shiny. just was curious.
**edit**
oh geeze i'm blind, i noticed you did change the ribbed legging, it looks rubber, and i think that fits MUCH better, and is definitely believable, there's got to be some flex in the leg for maneuvering.
great job.

hehehe. can't wait to see it!!!:)
p.s. i love the 'robot-i-cusaloon-i' banner in the sketch & toon photo.
especially the green 'i's i'm just infatuated with that color, i want to lick it, i'm sure it'd taste just lovely!

Hi.
Does anyone know how the hell i can make this thing walk finding it really hard to visualise the leg movement, if anyone knows of a site that shows spider or insect leg movement it'd be great
Cheers

That's some fine modeling there! We'll have to get your critter and mine in a room sometime and see what develops :D :

Thanks Oberon, love ur critter i'm guessing it rolls around wich is great, and u possibly thought it out a little longer than me hence a more polished end result :D
Definitley have to get these two together!

Well, it is spherical, but I never actually meant for it to roll, per se. I did make a few attempts to get it to walk, but I could never get the action to look smooth (it resembled a dying spider with arthritis :D ), so I gave up. If you're curious, you can see my WIP thread here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=199675) and the final results here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=200942).
Lol at Aldog: I was actually making a pun about the camera, but I can see how things might be misconstrued....

Great toon render. Personal taste here, but what about keeping the noise on the ink lines to a minimum and go for a more sharp line with overshot instead to give it a sketch feel. The loose lines don't compliment the sharpness and tech nature IMHO.

First of all LOVE the work here! VERY nice!
QUESTION: how'd you get the nice, tight fillets on the details (like the 'inset' detail on the main body, all over the legs, etc.). Did you edge weight or add EXTREMELY small chamfers to the edges? I'm kinda nutso about being able to meshsmooth and have HIGHLY detailed areas as well - yer pretty dam good at it!! ;)

Jon
First off, start with your front legs & back legs. The front will move at the same time as the back, but only on one side. The left & right will move opposite each other. Then your middle legs move opposite the front & back of that side.
See HERE (http://www.life.uiuc.edu/delcomyn/RSSimAnimation.html) for a demo of what I am talking about...
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies!
@jabbermacy: the fillet is due to a tight (very slight) extrude then sub-d (hyperNURB) here's what i mean:
Before extrude:-
http://img8.echo.cx/img8/5553/fillet012kj.jpg
After extrude:
http://img11.echo.cx/img11/1259/fillet029tr.jpg
as you can see a much sharper edge is achieved, if this has made no sense just ask, i'll try and explain it better ;)
@MagnaDyne:- thank you so much for that it's going to help no end! will post stills of progress or anims if any1 knows of a free movie file host!!??? That animation is perfect thank you again

Hi again, managed to completely miss the other 2 replies! sorry
so @Oberon: isn't making something in your mind easy, then realising it's alot harder to realise! and any "coming together" might be amusing"! and great work on him/her/it! good threads :)
@duderender: i'll do another render with your idea of overshoot lines, i see exactly where you're coming from, i was going for a fairly styalised render, but your idea makes more sense! thanks.

I use Bizhat for all my webhosting needs.
i'm not sure exactly how you'd host the file. it'd probabally have to be an .mov that you would just have people go to and look at...(having other people download from bizhat seems to be a pain)

C4DGenesis: Absolutely. It's a rare day that something I start out to build actually sees the light of day. I almost never do an initial concept sketch, so things start to evolve as soon as I create that first cube and start slicing and dicing :D

I'm not much for visualizing, so I took your picture and made it into a little gif animation.
Looks VERY nice, obviously choppy (DUH) But very sultry :wise:

just did the top view. VERY NICE!

awesome aldog, i've never done animation before so it's like taking the first few steps (excuse the pun :P)
I've actually bought a domain, and webhosting so if i can get the damn thing to work i'll post links to test anims

Gawd this post is full of keen quips.
hope you get the movement up and walking soon :scream::scream::scream::scream::scream::scream:AHAHAHAHAHAA

I can post my mini-ani's if you'd like.

oh dear aldog it's come down to this! :scream:
anyways... do you think the character of the bot should be 1 of a remote controlled (human controlled) or have a mind of it's own?
I'm in the process of fine tuning the scurrying action, try and get something posted later
cheers
aldog
04-29-2005, 02:08 PM
I see it as an A.I. bot.
Especially with the laser it has.
I interpreted that as a guide for the beast.
