Good work Heber. Modeling is looking really sharp there. imho, the contrast and saturation of your characters need to be increased by a little bit. They don't seem to stand out much with the background you have. Nothing that ae can't fix though. Just my 2 cent's worth. Best of luck in getting a job. :)

thanks to sheepfactory and the mods for the plug! :)

pum: thanks herb! youve been there for me all along , through all the struggles hehe , thanks man, now time to celebrate and move on , :)

fabian: another good friend , you have improved far beyond what i expected and you have a bright future as well , just keep practicing . I dont have to tell you to work hard you already do , remind me alot of myself. Doubting alot , working hard but in the end it pays off. Send me your reel in 2 months buddy , go hamster.

rider : hey john , your work is looking great as well , very promising at this point . keep it up.
thanks for the stars.

jamesdong: thanks james, your demo looks great btw , best of luck in your career and remember to play safe. ive heard the stories.....well from you... :)

stun: thanks sam. awesome sheeps you build hehe , best wishes.

chanchito: gracias cabron? do i know you man hehe ,

kwak: thanks kolby, i been inspired by the best and continue to do so , i hope this year i can continue to push to make better models.

dom: i agree about the contrast , it doesnt pop out enough but that may be due to my lighting , on my first character on my reel i must have lit the thing 5x times it was very frustrating in the end i was happy with that one but i did try and tweak it a bit. thanks for the crit. best of luck dom.

webhead: thanks man glad you like it.

ryan3d:hey mr, lim ! was a bit intimidating having you in a term before me and im sure we all felt the same. but in the end it was a good experience! maybe we can go moose hunting in edmonton as you said. see ya around.

Hi Heber !

I was expecting your reel... I was curious how the treeguy turned out.

Personaly i would like to see some stronger highlights on all your models. A better spec map would help, especialy on the barbarian. Also, i don't really get the sss sensation from him(more visible on the body). Your lowpoly model isn't that lowpoly at 8+ k. I think you wasted too many triangles on those things oh his back and the belts. You could've got better results with less tris, an opacity map and a more detailed normal map in that area.

Some things you might want to consider when modelling for lowpoly:
-triangles are not the enemy ;)
-when you have 3 vertices on the same line(colinears), eliminate the one from the midle. Use vertices only where you get a better result on your sihouette.

Overall you have a good reel(goes into the inspiration folder :) ).

Good luck on your job hunt( i'm sure you'll find something good ).

Hey man,
congrats on finishing your reel I know thats a major landmark and good luck in the industry...
I loved that blend facial rig, very cool, wish I could find sometning like that for max...

Question,
I'm a little new to using zbrush to detail objects.....any advice on exporting models and importing them to zbrush..
I tried exporting my mesh to an .obj format an importing it to zbrush but it came in all garbled with verts spiking off in every direction...any advice would be helpful..
once again great job!!!

Looks great, but one common mistake I think people make with demo reels is that they should name the file

heber_alvarado.mov

Otherwise studios and the like end up with a bunch of files all called

demo_reel.mov

or other generic names which don't really relate back to the artist.

Heber

dantheman: hey thanks dan , you should post your reel as well i keep telling your gf how good it is and congrats to the both of you on being finalists for the EA competition

dmonk: glad you like it man! thanks

nubian: ah jeez how did i miss that! thanks for pointing it out now that you mention it , it bugs me alittle ill see about fxing that thanks man.

jdsb: thanks jdsb for anyone to say that i inspire is an honor , i love your t720 you are a mechanical genius.

nikudy: thank you very much for the thourough crits on that, my spec maps are something i struggled with or "shading" on my characters but i am working to improve those things, i learned alot from making this demo and i hope to improve upon it this year with my new work.

vivec: thanks viv, nice avatar btw ;)

blacknull: pierre man , i am glad to have friends like you dude, i wish you the very best in your career. Say hi to the rest for me.

ngarte: hey adrian , thanks for the comments . how is singapore these days man? ill say hi to larry and magic like you always ask me to hehe

sinnic: lee? the audio guy , cool to see your taking an interest in 3d...but can you please remove that pic...i apreciate it but please remove it . its very distracting thanks.

losttogether: hey ally, glad to have you in my class, And glad i could of been of some help to you , like i tell you . You have so much potential ...maybe you just dont know it. Your work is also solid and i cant wait to see it on here as well. All the best for you.

Titan: I dont have too much experience with max, ive mainly used xsi and maya, but your problems sounds like an exporting issue , i know in xsi if you import a obj it comes with an extra node called "user normals" we usually delete it and mesh looks fine. YOu might want to check out some of the .obj export options and try diff settings...hope that was of some help.

riki: very good point. i will rename it as soon as i get to my computer.

gkaine: hey joe nah no worries dude, best of luck with vfs.

ravix: hey armando, yup im glad to be done now those vfs couches can be used by someone else hehe. best of luck

mireneye: ah man thanks for pointing that out , i totally missed that hehe those latenights sometimes you dont notice stuff like that.

noryx: hi thanks for the nice comments, i have been doing 3d for about 2 years, 1 st year was just trying a bit of everything and enjoying it all , then i enrolled into vfs and decided i wanted to model and texture. But i have a passion for other venus in cg as well just i decided to focus on this specifically

rani: thanks! you are an inspiration to us all rani , you dont realize how much i love your animation hehe keep in touch buddy. ohhh i also noticed you place finalist in the EA competition...congrats! the 20thousand dollars is yours!

voldron: thanks , i used zbrush/xsi/maya/afterfx/photoshop and a bit of deepaint for seams.

m_m_35: hmm sorry i couldnt say , i guess it varies depending on where you work and what company it is.

loocas: thanks loocas , your work is constantly improving , cant wait to see your new stuff.

slickster: never been in the industry, before vfs i attended another school where i dabbled in a few different things art related.

serinth: thanks , i have nothing but recomendations for the school...and no they didnt pay me to say that

04-24-2005, 06:59 PM
looks pretty good. i liked the face animation on your first character. I wish you had a central model that was more complex though, and antilus' axe needs a better metal shader with some blood on it (seeing as hes got blood all over his body). Should be no problem getting a job at a respectable games company.

on second look the axe seems to be bone. nevermind that.

Your reel does a good job of showing off your ability to create textures by hand, and model. I wasn't sure if you were orienting your reel at the game arena or broadcast/film, as the models look a bit heavy for low poly environments. If you are shooting for games, then I would put the poly count down like you did for the normal mapped Warg. The materials on your models look good if you're shooting for games but you should study the specular and gloss of the materials if your are going for non-realtime content. They are a bit too uniform giving the models an overall plastic look. Also there doesn't seem to be any reflections in your materials, even a basic reflection map would help sell them a bit more. If you tweek / break up the spec. and add in some simple reflections it would take your reel to the next level.

Again great designs, and modeling!

Good luck, and keep posting you have some great content!

I really love this reel, but the way that the music just blatently stops at the end was kind of strange. No fade? lol, anyway, i really must say that i'm impressed by the models, but i think the cuts and bruises on the textures are what sold it. the blood was awsome!
did you use any photo refs? or did the glossy shine get painted on with everything else?

bartek: thanks bartek! your a kickass animator as well ! cant wait to see your demo

formoso: hey ehren, i want to see your reel again , your class was one of the strongest vfx ive seen in a while.

gaetano: by hand painted i meant i had painted all the textures in photoshop with a wacom tablet over using mostly photographs and manipulating them.

h20rat: thanks for the crits, and i also agree about reflections and specularity , it something i need to work on.

mireneye: well i have a few in mind, but the one i really wanted to work for seems to have taken interest hehe.

dipan: added it on my vfs account check first page. glad you like it.

breoniks: hey buddy , glad i could meet another hard working individual , you have great skills and im sure you will get to where you want to go , take it easy tyler. keep in touch.

mgard: hey ho suck moon, i looked at some of your new animations..great work man. wheres eggy? i want to see some new anims with him.

dusk: yeah the music thing is bugging me but ive learned my lesson :)
ah that was alot of fun to work on but i did have to look at gruesome and gory things that i wouldnt rather see but it helped.

tom: hey man , haha moses . now i remember , i see your budy judas too often .

FrontPage! Congrats!

You know I love your work so I don’t have too much to say. It's great to finally see your reel completed. You worked hard and it definitely shows. I want to animate those chains on Balthar and I see some good face shapes I would love to work with. I enjoyed watching his slider test. Awesome Reel… Can't wait to hear where you finally decide to work. Hope I get a chance to work with you in the states someday. Best of Luck… Not that you need it.

thats some good work you have there, the troll model there is especially good....
i would like to say how amazing it is that even after all these years since i went to vfs that the most popular theme in every class is medieval muscle men with axes, or knights with the odd orc or samurai dude thrown in!

.:ZRDwD:.
04-25-2005, 02:02 PM
Heck... I don't even need to see the reel to be impressed by you, Heb. Great stuff.

But, big question:
I am having issues playing the viddy. Saying Quicktime doesn't recognize it. Tried other proggies and they are saying the same thing. Something about a VFR or VMR error. I can play all my other QT reels but this.

Any suggestions? I now have TWO copies from two source links, and both do the same thing. I don't want to try here at work... they are too behind on codecs.

Nice modeling. My only concern is that your reel looks strikingly similar to Herbert Lowis' VFS reel that was plugged here last week. Both included stellar modeling, but in the end they are indistuingishable in presentation.

Finally, i'm done downloading! That's a huge file for a 2 minute and a half.mov, what compressor are you using, you'd normally want it as small of a file size as possible w/o comprimising video quality too much when submitting to companies.

Well, a double congrats to you and herbert for making front page, i think both of your modeling pieces are my favorite in your class. It's good that you presented the troll first, he is definitely the best piece. However, the shaders and textures could've been improved in all your models. Seeing the color map, it still looks blurry and not detailed enough. The specularity could've been enhanced to make your models look even more believable, using a relection map definitely helps. The lighting could've been tweaked as well to enhance the mood and drama for the characters. Usually i would tone down some lights or strengthen other lights to draw the viewer's eye on only the best detail on the character the most.

Good luck with finding a job and in your future endeavors.

2 Thumbs up =D

I gotta agree the presentation is samiliar a bit, but i gotta admit the timing is good - you gave each model one cycle of each pass, and showed quite a few well-detailed solid models, the futuristic combat guy really kicked ass, and the rigging of the troll is something else, keep it up and good luck in your hunts :)

Some of the best work I've seen. I just can;t believe somebody is out there who doesn;t like your texture mapping skills. As far as I'm concerned it's top notch. In fact, I'm jealous. Anyhew I'm creating a creature and I want it to be as close to your trolls texturing. Would you mind if I hit you up for some pointers later???
