View Full Version : Net Render
arseniq 04-23-2005, 04:36 AM as everybody know rendering an animation takes too much time.. i discovered the net render with big hopes for helping me.. I don't know english very very well but i understand that backburner2 splits the task to network computers from 3ds7's manual. I set up the connection between my other computer on lan. Everything seems ok but the backburner doesnt split the task to computers, it is randomly assigning one of the pcs at the beginning and rendering the whole movie with it. I want to think that this is my mistake otherwise what does this backburner standing for?
any idea?

As far as I know backburner and Max's internal renderer only work to send out individual frames... You can't use it to render fragments of an image. It's one of the features of brazil, and you might be able to split the frame up among the net machines with mental ray... But I'm no expert on that.

Yep it's your fault ;)
Backburner is the net renderer, and it will break animations up and send them off to different computers for rendering. So it's a configuration issue on your end, which isn't suprising because it's bit tricky to setup.
The only thing i can suggest is that you don't render to video files, render a sequence of images (tga or png are usually good choices). I seem to remember there being problems with rendering video over several machines.

When you go to render your scene, and the net render dialogue pops up, make sure that you check the "use all servers" option. Also, make sure you've started the 'server' process on all of your render machines, and double-check with the manager to make sure they're all registering properly. Even if they do register just fine, you might still have problems if you haven't properly configured your firewall (I'm just assuming you have one running).
Also, to further what antrent is saying, Backburner can't use multiple PCs when rendering to a video format, so be sure to render everything as an image sequence.
To use a render farm, you must output a frame sequence in a still-image file format; for example, a series of BMP files. You cannot render animated file formats such as AVI, MOV, and FLC to multiple systems. You must render animated files to a single system. When rendering to an animated file format, the Use All Servers check box in the Network Job Assignment dialog is unavailable.

Wroung. It renders fragments just fine (the "split scan lines" option).

)AIs it possible to compile said bitmaps/whatever image files as a compound video file afterwards?
Nevermind, just figured it out myself. That's progress for you.

thanks for your interest..
As i tried to mention in first post there is nothing wrong with the connection, i was trying to render an avi file :) working with image files works fine..
And, a little searching with google i discovered that it is possible to create a movie from image sequences with a free tool called VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org)
