Hi, Bonjour!

Really good short. Really Pro modeling, textures and movements. I did not see the 3d in it. Or not much. It all pass well. I really like how you arrange the musical cues as well. It blend perfectly even if it's from different movies. It sounds like it was made for this.

I really enjoy this! Gratz hope you get the front page.

Bon travail! Vous méritez les applaudissements :)

I can't believe there's only 3 replies on this, and not even a rating. Great story, I really got into it and hoped that little guy could run away!

Extremely nice animation.

My only crit is that it starts up a bit like its in the middle of a animation, like it has a middle and a end, but no beginning...BUT, I can see that maybe you wanted to grab peoples attention straight off or get to the complicated character animation straight off as well......and it does exactly that.....it grabs and keeps your attention from the very start and continues to so through the entire 5 minutes. This alone is a hard task, to keep the viewers attention.

Cinematography is also very nice, lovely depth of field going on.

I gotto agree with elfling bard, i was impresed at how you'd used all them bits form film scores, it didn't come off as that at all.

thx 2 all of u guys.

i'm an other part of the NOX Team. I really enjoy u enjoy watchin our short movie !

Lord Dowswell : I just wonder "how do you know???" because actually the first plan of the movie, introducing the baby monster and the insect, never rendered. this is the "cursed plan" of the movie. we made the animation and we have the 3dsmax file but it never wanted to render....

keep givin us your opinion about the movie.
and the trailer too.

This was very very good  no crits ;) It has the quality of Ice Age, The Mummy, and Dinosaur!
This should really be on the front page :D

Good film, very well edited.

Great Models, great textures and great lighting. Animation is good overall but IMHO has one or 2 bits where it seems a bit unbeleiveable, such as when the little guy get flung into the rocks. He hit that with so much force it should have made him splat!

I also agree with Lord Dowswell, the film has no start. I'd seriously reccomend rendring it as it does seem a bit incomplete in its current state.

Good stuff :)

I think people are going to hate me for being honest about my feelings but here goes...

It looked pretty cool at first, modelling is awesome and texturing except maybe for the lava flow at the end it gave me the feeling of a totally different style to the rest of it. Rendering... again looks great, there are a few places where the lighting seems strange and objects don`t fit in with the rest... like they have an obvious different lighting set up. Animation is what I`m going to hit hard on, movements didn`t feel realistic for such animals, sense of weight was not very good... I think for me the worst part was where the big mommy monster jumps across a crevase that the much smaller one did with relative ease. Her pose, mid jump, looked so human that it made me cringe... alot of other movement seemed too human aswell all through out. Obvious ideas were taken from various movies... Ice Age, The Mummy, Dinosaur, it`s cool to use ideas from other movies that you may have liked but this seemed too much to me.

Great for a student movie, on technical skill you made an awesome team, I just feel the story was a little lacking, animation could have been kicked up a notch.

Just my 2 cents of opinion. :)

04-25-2005, 10:24 PM
thank you very much for your opinion.

we had 8 month to complete the whole project strarting from scratch to the final version of the film. At a certain point we had to make choices in term of animation in order to gain time, and not sacrifice to much of the rendering process. This may explain why some of the animation are not quite as finished as some others.

We wanted to make a hollywood type movie, sorry if some you found too many reference to exiting movies. It was not the purpose and not our goal.
Hopefully you ll enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Cheers

I thought it was great! Although the millions of spiders at the end was a little too random for my liking, the lighting was great, and the tension/pacing was also well done.

Great job on finally getting it completed

That was excellent IMO. I am not a technical guy liek alot of the people here (yet hopefully) so speaking from a strictly "wow that was great to watch" view point....amazing work there, I can't wait to see if you guys produce antoher short sometime in the future, awesome stuff there.

This needs front page attention. I mean, come on. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the majority of animation on CGtalk is sub par at best. This blows it out of the water.

Truly inspirational. Every now and then something small like this comes out and gets me excited to continue perusing my own short film endeavors.

The best of luck with future projects!

that was very well done!
i remember seeing the trailer a few months back , only critique i have is at times i feel like the character are not standing on the ground, like they are missing a contact shadow or something.
Other than that superb work! i can see all the hard work that was put into this. Hope this gets plugged its definite front page material! :)

Man you superinfocom-ers just keep getting better! For the style that you were aiming for and the length of the piece I think you've really done a great job. The animation actually felt pretty good to me, i believed in the weight of the characters, and I kind of liked the food chain story, basic but then it did what it needed to support the action. Only crit is that you could have done with more dust in places, that would have added a lot in the impacts of footsteps and rocks falling. It isn't too late to go back and put some in ;)

Front page imo

Thought the story was dreadfully dull, still. The CG is stunning, I just don't like the movie itself.

supinfocom rocks ... all the stuff coming from this school really has a very high standard, must be a great place to study.

really enjoyed the movie alot. when i saw the still image i thought it will be a very creepy and bloody flic. the more i was suprised by the great ambient, modelling and even animation. the last could have been improved in some parts, still there was a lot going on and i think you did the job pretty pretty good.

so please any moderator stick this baby to front page. for my taste there are far too many "sketch of the week" and photoshop beauties up there, animation gets totaly undersupported ... just my two cents.

Reminds me of a cross between Walking with Dinosoars, A land before time and some TV show about killer bees. Great work overall. Music fits very well with the action on screen. A amazing peice that I would love to see a full langth movie about.

front page issue

i really think this one should go to front page. i also tried to report it to a moderator, but they took away the function that was a button in the old cgtalk interface. how to you do this now? send a PM to one of the moderators. or do they decide this on their owns.

hope a mod is passing by here or someone can tell how to proceed

this really makes me sad ... i wrote to 5 moderators yesterday to stick this to front page, and today i find this scorpion thing up there. i like the scorpionanimation, no question good anim. still it is a unrednered playblast of one testsequence ... i really would have prefered to see this piece up there, but as this was the animation-frontpage-issue of the month and now it will be time for another 20 "sketch off the week" thingies, i give up.

Veeeery nice work on this guys. I love the part were the little one is stuck in the hole. Big Tension there. The view were his... bottom moves and the stones react is impressive! Also the camera move afterwards.
What i don't really like is the end though. You had my emotions at this point. I cared about the little one. He survived the whole Chasing sequence just to get killed by some Spiders in the end?!? Doh! Don't waste that precious emotion of the viewer like that. (Although the jumping Spider really got me... :applause:)

When you guys invest some time in a nice story and deeper characters you will score big time! Definately keep it up guys. :buttrock:

technically very well done! plus great designs for the monsters, got to give you that :)

the story was pretty good too, the only thing that (somehow) bothers me is how the story goes from 'cute little monster' to 'nature is cruel'. I can't put my finger on it, but it's probably the cuteness of the little guy and the harsh ending of the short...

overall great work, give me more :)

great short guys, there's a bit of linearity, and some part where nothing really happens, good twist at the end but maybe you could have found something really more interresting..
There's definitly really kickass moments of pure action, and good editing.
Too bad there is not enough strong storytelling behind it, but hey.. you did fine!!

As you have surely experimented it, when it comes to production, you have no more time to think and twick errors and mistakes.. that`s why preproduction is the most dramatically important part of the work.. what i can see here is that you work really hard on storyboards or animatic stuff, but you didnt try to push your base story (from my point of view)

I know guys that it's a bit frustrating to get critics from here to there, but it's good to keep them in mind and adress them in your next work...
bon allez on arrete la les critiques, c'est vraiment un tres bon travail ;)
Bravo et encore, tres bon boulot, keep it up!

Not frustrating at all! That's the reason why we posted it here, to get critics. This is what makes you progress!
For the base story I agree with all of you we didn' t spend much time on it. We spend an awfull lot of time on the design of the creatures and on the animatik .
Next time will be better, I hope.

Really great usage of Camera and Music.

Regarding to the credits you used scores from various movies and mixed them, is this right? Really good work.

The animation was appropriate to tell the story.
Maybe write a story/making of how you did it, the process, i think this would be interessting.

Congradulations!

Great animation, editing, use of music and sound-FX, etc...I really enjoyed watching it

I looked around your site for more info about you guys (just 4 of you right?), I am interested to hear more, for example who was responsible for what. Did you guys have specific roles in the production?
Seems like a ton of work to accomplish in 8 months.

Sorry if I missed it somehow. The credits seemed kinda general to me.

Will you continue to work together?

dioxide
05-07-2005, 09:20 PM
I dont think it was a great use of Sound at all. It misses that boom at times when the dinosaur hits the other, which is important. Otherwise this is a bestestest animation ever.

Fantastic work guys (and gals?)!!

Love it.

My crits, if any would be these:

1) Agree that contact shadows were missing a lot, giving things a "hovery" feel

2) I'm suprised noone else caught this: WAY too much depth-of-field...makes everything look like a minature.

3) Minor nitpick; I would have liked to see some more specularity in the renderers, like a wet glittery layer on the creatures, like moisture... they looked a bit.... matte... dull.... flat... somehow.

My QUESTION is: What tools did you use? Animated in? Renderer?

Again, these comments are just DETAILS and it's fantastic.

I was most impressed w. the dynamic work on the crumbling rock stuff and the cave-in of the ceiling, having myself done a very similar shot in Revelations (http://revelations.master-zap.com) which came out nowhere near as cool...!

On one hand, you do have good taste in your choice of music and it is pretty well-integrated into the movie. I also thought the cinematography was well-thought, especially two shots: 1, when the young creature first wakes up after falling through the floor while fleeing the first beast, and 2, when the big nasty sticks his head out of the rockpile.

On the other hand, I can't bring myself to like the story, since I can't think what particularly redeeming qualities it has. We never come to understand the setting or the characters (and don't tell me "it's a short film", you still have to establish plot in a short), since it seems to me that you focused on the animation to the exclusion of working out the kinks in the storyline. I mean, the beast which attacks the young creature is apparently a different one than the beast which attacks his mom, but they look identical? That's unnecessary and confusing. Same goes for the spiders. Part of the problem may be that you felt the need to have every moment have some sort of action, which meant no time to explain what was going on.

Great job on this guys! I thought everything was really top notch considering time limitations etc...! The only thing I wanted to see was an even bigger and badder monster come to avenge te death of her little 'bug' baby. I mean the thousands of little critters were cool but when the one got stomped I thought oh crap, whats coming next and the bugs (although lots of them) were not as cool as what I expexted. Great job over all though!

Err,
yeah the beast that attacks his mom, and attacks the baby are the same one,
they look the same, and are the same, why would you think they aren't?
I guess if you thought that, then that is a slight flaw,
and obviously the short payed more attention to the visuals than the story,
it was an action piece, as opposed to the funny, or clever pieces you might find from
the likes of pixar, or the wonderful mr.landreth

But I found the story still quite entertaining in this one.
I liked how it focused on the parent hunting for revenge for it's childs demise,
and it used that throughout the short, switching the player of the parent/child around (big mommy, little mommy, insect).

"looked so human that it made me cringe"

I agree with that. Animation needs some work, but i know that it depends on the time span. But it's good for what it is. Not many people are able to stick with one project and finish it to the end.

First off, I want to congratulate you and your team on an amazing movie, I really enjoyed watching it and the trailer even more so. As I watch through the movie a second time, I came up with a couple things that annoyed me, that I wish could be changed because that would make this movie industry-standard.

- I like how in the end the littlest guys (the spiders) get their revenge and win.
- Dust particles and splattering of blood would be nice, expecially when the mother gets thrown by the big dinosaur.
- Perhaps a little more texturing on the wounds would be awesome.
- The little guy's face animation is superb.
- The speed/weight ratio of the charaters felt a little off. They move too fast, considering their weight. Or at least, if they did move that fast, momentum would have a larger effect.
- The continously changng camera angles are also great, panning and zooming could be used a little more.
- The demonstration of the power of the big dinosaur is a little disappointing, especially at the part where he slams his claws down on the ground. A louder sounds effect combined with a bigger particle explosion would work absolute wonders here.
- The effects of the tumbling and smashing rocks is great, but they just don't feel heavy or strong enough for the animation. For example, when one of the rocks tumbles down in front of the little guy, it bounces lightly a couple times and then smashes into a million pieces like it was made of glass. Two pieces would have been better.
- Some of the effects could have been slowed down to build tension, while quieting the music to double the effect. Two examples here: after all the huge rocks have fallen on the big guy, the focus changes from far-away to focusing on the little guy, who then turns and runs away. Tension is completely lost in the speed of that situation. Second example: When the little guy is thrown, it moves too fast. Of course, it would move fast, but a slow-motion effect here could make this incredible, with of course, dimming of the music for just that part so that the impact (which should be louder) can be heard, perhaps with a clash as the music comes back strongly. Just a thought there.
- When the large dinosaur opens his eyes, that should be in time with the music just as it was in the trailer.
- The ending was very good, though it could have used a little more tension building - a close up of the main character's eye widening would help, as well as making the scene a little longer.

Overall, great, great movie, I look forwar to the day that I will be able to create such great animations.

Okay good, just so I know I'm not hallucinating... I was getting worried when noone else mentioned it.

Again, it's just a detail in something VERY impressive, so I'm not putting the work as a whole down in ANY way.... it's a common enough mistake to do.... once I wrote a tutorial on how to "think" proper DOF levels (little things like, the "size" of blur closer than the focus point is never larger than the lens (well, iris, actually) of your camera would be) but it may have been lost.....

that was so AWESOME!

I felt for the little one, I didn't want him to die...but that ending...sniff sniff
but I liked how you made the spiders attack him, that was so non-cliched.

There is few errors of camera and the light are a little bit flat on the background.
Dommage.
But a true talent for the animation and the design, the textures of the character and the particule effect!

Great job guys!!
Ouais ça déchire quand même bien messieurs!

That was awesome. Great job! The music was a great choice and the camera angles were very well done.
My only critique is that all of the spiders that came out of the cave at the end was a little too random for my liking. There didn't seem to be any real connection to it other than in the very beginning. And to me, that little intro to the spider creature wasn't enough.
Nonetheless, excellent job. I highly enjoyed watching it.
Take care.

Superb work. I was really thrilled at some scenes!!

One thing tho:
DOF!
Too much of it! Too much DOF makes the sizes seem like miniature models. I was instantly let down by that miniature feeling. Please, if the DOF is put in Post, try to reduce it and see for yourselves :) This is a very important issue, but I guess its too late to say now :) Next time, go easy on DOF, please!!

I totally disagree. The whole piece had a theme of big vs. small, strong vs. weak. The spiders coming back at the end and persevering with their numbers and working together to overcome the giant beast, despite it's size, continues this theme.

Again, well done.

Thumbs up NOX team,

Great animation, superb editing, excellent job all round!

Well done... This proves that you don't need Hollywood budget to produce Hollywood quality animation. Of course the story line, promotion, talents, film transfer etc is another matter. But animation is animation.

Cheers and best regards.

Visually this work is stunning. The bug scene was very impressive as well.

However as with all animated work, the visuals are minor compared to the story. It's just the frosting. I know in this CG community we concentrate on looks, but I always have to emphasize that afterall, the whole purpose of animating in the first place to to tell a story.

With that regard I think this piece has no story. It is a simple chase/thriller. Zero story, which leaves something to be desired when the short was finished. I see the big/small hunter/hunted theme, but a simple theme alone just doesn't cut it. But I have to give you credit for the excellent camera work that gives this thing such an excellent sense of suspense.

And last but not least, the animation is top notch overall, however there are some sequences which does not look very convincing.

Oh yea, don't forget that I think that you did an excellent job, really. I'm just used to critiqing like this from class. heh. I know this kind of finalized stuff usually doesn't get edited, but hopefully it was helpful nonetheless.

Latest divx should also be able to decode the movie. And it is not that hard to find a xvid compile, what is google for anyway? You should be able to find it in less then 4 seconds.

edit: removed url as I don't know the rest of the contents of the site.

But here are the ingenous search keys:

Awesome Job Guys! :) So many people set out to create short animations.. it's nice when people succeed at it!

Too bad about the first scenes of the story though. I'm sure there are people on this board that could help you guys de-bug the scene if you ever want to finish it!

thank you for an entertaining film

Your short is great! Its a wonderful student film. It looks professional, but to make one critique, I would say I agree about the number of spiders. If you want to keep that, and I would, I think you may want to put more spiders crawling throughout the cave. This would help foreshadow the ending with so many spiders. Again, Amazing work!!

This was an awesome job. I really liked the baby character and I thought the animation was A PLUS. My suggestions go along with everyone else, maybe more dust type effects and dirt or a wet look on the skin.
I thought your music was htting the emotional beats very well, but a few of the secondary sfx could be pumped up a little
I wish I could do something like this, but feel good in knowing you've definitely inspired me and I bet a few others as well

Excellent work! Hard to crit when so many things about it are awsome. I loved the focal blur and camera work. Character animation was great as well. My biggest crit would be that the spider guys don't swarm over the Main monster. As it is now I found myself not completely beleiving that the Main monster would be driven to fall off the edge. If they were all over him it would come off more natural. I know for obvious technical reasons this may have been to time comsuming to consider doing but thought I would mention it.

Inspiring work guys! Great music/sound FX editing as well!

actually the spiders had to crawl over him, and the way to make it had been found and done. The only issue was that for some script issues the scene would take 45minutes to open and we only had 2days to finish the movie. So we didn't do it that way. But it was our goal. There are so many things we would have loved to do. But since the movie as been done for almost a year now, we past on some other projects. A new movie should be out by september if everything is going alright. No monsters this time, but still a bit of action though. We'll keep you posted when some stuf we'llbe completed.

cheers

This needs front page attention. I mean, come on. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the majority of animation on CGtalk is sub par at best. This blows it out of the water.

I agree with Matt, I lucked out when I stumbled upon this animation months ago. It really is a jem that had to have been overlooked. It has definitly inspired me with my own short animation projects.

I agree, technically it's excellent, but entertainment wise it's also a big zero for me.

To be fair, I'd say the same thing if it was a live action film, with humans instead of monsters, in that case it would be a pointless violence / revenge piece, i.e. the kind of movie that if I knew the storyline ahead of time I'd never watch.
