Hi everyone,

i just found this forum and thought that this is (hopefully) the best way to get some useful critics on my works.

To explain it a bit more: iīve just started with polymodelling but the great works of the challengers inspired me to learn this unique technic !

So i start with the eyes and go further with nose and mouth to get finally a niceīnīsmooth looking female head. Any comments on this first picture would be great !!

See Ya

Hi Bassit,

it looks like you eyes may be a bit too far apart. (your work not you!) Generally for a life model the gap is roughly the same width as a third eye.
it may be of use to use a reference image in your scene if your not allready. Map a front projection of your character to a flat poly and a side projection to another.
if its just a modelling exercise you could use any images available to you, provided their of the same person of course !!
:)

Keep up the good work and let us see the finished model !

Thanx !

I thought that there is something wrong with the eyes, but had no clue... that thing with the third eye is a good thing to know - i will work on it and you will see an update soon !
Thanks again !

Here is a little update on the eyes and nose (& some lightning ;)
You have a good eye, Malcolm *g*

Iīll be back with a totally blocked out character next update.

Any critics are welcome !

I would say the outside corner of the eye tends to be pinched a little more. Rather than the rounded corner that you have, try a sharp angle. Often where the top and bottom eyelid meet here, the top one almost overlaps the bottom. I hope that was clear. Look in a mirror, up close at your own eyes. They look great so far, though.

I try to work on the eyes again - very constructive critic, thanks !

The whole character should look like a mixture of real and anime... i canīt draw well so i just have some ugly sketches i donīt want to show ;)

Iīm really tired now - so iīll update the mesh tomorrow...

Really good input from you guys - i begin to love this Community :D

After some more hours of creating vertices, pushing them around and tweak the whole mesh iīve got a nice female body... O.K. i know i have to spend some more time into skin-details and very soft muscles - but i think thatīs a mesh i can work with.

I just applied some low-res beta-textures, but every comment or critic is welcome !

Iīve added the ears and worked on the whole head a bit...

Now i start again on tweaking the eyes - meanwhile it would be great to get some comments, so i know what to change.

Donīt be so lazy - gimme some input ;)

looking good so far.
one comment w. the eyes- the area above the upper eyelid and below where the eyebrow should be a little more... puffy? it should come out and down a bit... look at some old people, where their muscles have started to sag and you'll see what i mean. I recently started on a head and that was something i forgot, but made it look better when i added it.

Hi everyone !

I just make small steps, but i think itīs coming along nice ;)

If i see all of those great challengers and how they make progress on their projects i feel like a fool :(

To model that mouth ist took me over 7 hours and iīm not satisfied (oooh - what spelling ?) with it...

PS: Thanks Chrislomaka for that nice hint - but i donīt know exactly what you mean :( I looked at some model-pix, but i donīt know what to change... it would be great if you could make a fast sketch or something so i could get a clue !

it might take me a bit to get a sketch to you (i'm still setting things up at home, so i have to get it done at work...) but until then, take a look at the inside lightwave 6 book by new riders. even the cover might give demonstrate what i'm talking about...
don't get too discouraged from looking at the great work you see here. we all started out somewhere, and it usually wan't pretty. and even people who have been doing this a while still make mistakes. no one expects to be a master artist the first time they pick up a pencil, but for some reason they think they can w. the computer. that is soooo very not so. typically by the time i've completed a project, i've learned so much that if i were to have to re-do it, i'd do it quite differently...
um, i guess i'll quit rambling for now. i'll see what i can do about a sketch on tuesday.

the nose seems a bit small to me, and the head looks a bit strange, but I can't really figure out whats wrong.

Thanx guys for the comments...

i am actually working on the head again and will try to finish it till tomorrow. Maybe then there is something for more to say ! Now it looks like a thin mask ;)

Thanks chrislomaka for taking the time to help me !!

The nose is definately too small. And it seems like the whole head is squished vertically. It could be because there is no chin to "finish" the visual. The ears may be too small also. I think that once you get a whole head together it will be easier to see the things that look out of place.

Good work so far. Until I tried, I never knew it could be so difficult. And I am FAR from knowing how to do it ... Much respect to anyone that attempts it!

Thanx for the comments... i was trying to tweak the head and what you can see below is the result.

Feel free to add your comments ;)

As you can see there is also some progress on the body: just removed the ugly early textures and redefinded breast, rips and stomach . . .

It might be offtopic, but i just found a great audio-stream (4 hours) !!! Every friday 20:00 cet live - and 24/7 looping ;)

I will always start that stream if i browse this HUGE forum... Havī fun listening !

Ok, here it is...Nice work but you still have a lot of tweaking to do on the head. Don't be affraid to delete some faces a rebuild them, sometimes it`s the only way. The nose, as many mentioned, is definately too small. The ears have some proportion problems, it might not be at the right place...find a book with anatomical drawings and follow the lines , there are rules when doing a head that you need to follow. The other problem I see is her jaw, it`s too strong when looking at it from a sideview. The first thing I would do would be to use a latice (or ffd if you're using max) and try to get better proportion. Once the proportions are set, don't be afraid to delete some faces to rebuild more appropriate ones and try to follow the muscle lines. Her lips are not defined enough.
These are just my impressions but overall it`s good work, you'll get there..just take time to tweak a lot and don't be afraid of using references. Put an image in your viewport and use the proportions.
Anyways, that`s it for now, keep it up :)

crude sketch, i know, but i hope it gives you an idea as to what i was talking about. the upper eyelid kinda slides in underneath this fold of skin. it gets really pronounced in old people...

Thanx to all of you !!! I will try to use all these hints and spend the next MAX-sessions just to tweak the head ;)

echo: Thatīs a whole lot of hints - thanks again !!! I think you could be right with the ears...

chrislomaka: Thank you for taking the time ! I think i got it now ...

DWIEMER: Yes, will do ;)

Well, i think of an update later today or tomorrow !

Without you guys i still wouldnīt know whatīs looking strange on this female...

BASSit
02-20-2002, 05:17 PM
Iīve just attached the head to the body...i have also done some tweaking on the head - not enough ;) The ears are bigger now - and the lips have got more volume.

I think echo is right: there are still some polys or faces that i donīt need to define the head - i will spend some more time on it.

About the nose: mmh, i like it so small and tiny.... remember itīs a kind of anime-style...

I donīt like these bald chicks :D Is there a fast way to get some hair on her... i mean without any expensive plug-in (iīve spent all my money on this 4th Max-version :(

So here is the first pic:

Hey chrislomaka,

maybe you want to take a look at this new eye. I am really proud of it ! This "crude" ;) sketch showed me exactly what you mean... And you were right - "it made it look better when i added it."

Will add the new eye later today... right now i will start on a better mouth. Any hints & tips how to model voluminous female lips ?!?

Fhameed
02-21-2002, 08:42 PM
It's probably worth doing a very low polygon face - just to get the proportions right - base it on some realistic person and getl oads of photo reference. Once you understand the basic proportions of a low poly face - you can move up to a much higher one:>

BASSit
02-22-2002, 06:13 AM
Thanks for that hint Fhameed, but i am actually have just around 150 vertices that describe the head . . . the rest come from a meshsmooth-modifier.

Iīve played around with multiple textures the first time - and i am a lil bit proud of these quick textures ;) Yeah, i know the eyelines are a bit ugly, but that was just a test !

The eyes are more believable now, but these lips donīt fit very well... if someone knows a good tutorial for creating female lips or have some useful hints on modelling them, donīt hestitate to tell me.

Any comments are welcome !

BASSit bud, buddy slooooooooooooow down man where's the fire? I took a glance thru this thread and had to reply, you're jumping all over the place and even texturing b4 you yourself are happy with the model, a good head alone can take a day or even more depending on your speed, the body is even tougher, especially a females... I don't want to sound harsh but you have to use references when modeling a human and it's obvious you didn't here, take a look at this resource

http://www.planetquake.com/shattered/shine/images/ref/anatomy/page_01.htm

and especially here http://www.erc.msstate.edu/~camen/thehumanhead/

you have too take it one step at a time, look at your model and then look at a reference pic, is it close? are you happy? keep pushing yourself, 3D is a neverending road, there's really no need to rush, unless you have a Production Manager breathing down your neck ;)

here's the proper way to model a mouth http://www.3dluvr.com/setherial/tutor/mouth/tutor01.htm and eyes http://www.3dluvr.com/content/artz/3dsmax/std/eyes1.php and here's even an iris tut http://my.en.com/~kimo/eyemap-tut.html
cheers

Thanks lildragon for taking the time and drop me a message !!! Youīre right, i made the second step before the first ;) - but i canīt wait to try everything ! And now i know how different map-channels and maps work... now i can prepare the mesh for that last step while still editing. And many thanks for the URLs !!!! That is exactly wath i was looking for !

Here is another image . . . iīll have to push some verts and tweak everything, but step by step this character becomes what i had in mind :D

Nice work so far BASSit. I'm also new to 3D character modeling, but I've been drawing for a long time, I get the feeling that you're going for an anime look in your female. The shape of the head, eyes and nose are close if that's what you're trying for. I did notice that the nostrils are probably much larger than they should be for that anime look. Also there's a small bump behind the eyes, not sure if it's meant to be the cheek bone, if so, it's probably too high. i think where that bump is should be smoothed out for the anime style or toned down and lengthened backward for realistic style. One last thing, I think that the head is a little too wide where the ears are even for anime, and maybe rotate the ears forward a little. I keep a mirror on my desk when i draw just for anatomy and proportion reference and that seems to help me a lot. Sorry for my rambling, once again that's great start and I can't wait to see the finished product!!:)

Thanks 3DZukini for the comments... and yes, as you can read in one of the first posts, i was trying to make a mix of anime/manga and real. I will try to work on the cheek-bones and ears some more !

Iīve made some teeths and worked on the iris again . . . but i couldnīt decide wich color ?!

REM: The dark skin is just because the map-coordinates were lost after attaching the new mouth and teeth !

Your work has improved a lot. Told you there was something wrong with the ear
:D
Now, the key word as it has been mentioned before is take your time, take your time and take your time. You still have some hard edges. Texturing is pretty long as well after, this is not the part where you want to go fast as it can make all the difference in the world. take a look at the texture work on www.amazonsoul.com ...I know it`s not the look you are looking for but on these models, the texture improves the (very good) mesh a lot. It can make a HUGE difference.

Anyways, great work, you're getting there :)

the eye definitely looks better now BASSit.

and my vote is for the blue eye, though maybe a darker shade of blue...

BASSit
02-23-2002, 09:06 PM
Thanks for the comments...

echo: I am actually tweaking the face a bit, but no more major changes planned !

chrislomaka: Good choice - the blue one was my second choice after a very dark brown one ;)

Any more votes for that iris-question ?!?

I think i like the look of the head now - and i also think that my very first humanoid character must not be perfect ;) I just want to go trough all stages of character-creation... so the next WIP will become much better i think (i hope).

Edit: ...Here is the 1280 x 1024 wallpaper ! (http://alshaheen.net/artists/bassit/WIP_Mia_3.bmp)

I am about to attach the head and body, but i foresee some problems: For the emotions and phonems i will use morph-targets and blend them... and for the body there is a sceleton needed ! So if i have one big mesh (head & body) and create morph-targets my memory will be full and i dont know if this will work correctly... The other way would be to leave the head as a single mesh and link it to the neck - but then there is a visible border between these parts !

Any solutions to solve this problem ?!

Here is an update...

BASSit

I worked on the cloth for about 3 hours and the picture below shows the progress so far . . .

http://the3d.ws/artists/bassit/cloth_1.jpg

The girl on the left was just added to show you what the cloth should look like - i donīt know if i go on with that transparent or make it like the reference ?! Any suggestions ?

chrislomaka
02-25-2002, 05:13 PM
personally, i like it at the transparency it's at now. just a little shear (sheer?)... just enought to give you an idea as to that's underneath, without becoming too transparent.

keep up the good work!
