View Full Version : Gradually Blurring reflections!?
igor popovic 10-03-2002, 10:16 PM ok, so i'm trying to make a material thats like a hardwood floor, which has enough reflection but not too much, i'm trying to create the effect where the reflection begins sharp, but slowly tapers off to a blur...i hope you understand what i want...thanks in advance!
i'm using max5

EDit: I also have a small problem, in max 5 you can make an object glow, or give off radiance through the selection of advance lighting override material, well i tried everything i can think of but nothing works, my object just glows by itself, not giving off any energy...anyone know how to solve this? ps. i did read the max refrence and that didn't help!
thanks

You mean blur the reflection based on distance to the surface? That would be like Glossy Reflections (see Brazil or VRay). There are controls for bluring reflections globally both in FlatMirror and Reflect/Refract Map. I don't think Raytrace Map or Material has this though. A workaround would be to split the reflections into a separate pass with Render Elements and just blur that element.

Try a mixmap in your reflectionslot, map1 as a blurry reflection, map 2 as a sharp reflection and the mixmap as a fresnell faloffmap. Haven't tried it yet doh.

I could be done in max 4 basic with the raytracer.. but everything has changed in max 5 raytracer... :/

I thought the question was the bluring of the reflection due to distance. Meaning the further away the reflection is, less clear it becomes?
IF the question above is the right one...
1) The easy way : Render it into an element and post it.
2) The longer and hard way : Create volume density for atmos on the element. (please correct me if i'm wrong)
