View Full Version : Edge Creases/ MeshSmooth
.oO-cloak-Oo. 10-03-2002, 07:18 PM Just wondering why the edges that I crease on a poly/meshsmoothed object always get messed up if I add an edge cut or extrusion anywhere on the same object. I just end up waiting until the end to add my creases and weighted verts, but was wondering if there was another way around it. Thanks in advance.

Nope :)
Just keep doin it at the end
I'm pretty sure it's the vertex numbering that screws it up.

I never ever use edge creases, for one thing I don't like the shading discontinuity it causes, but mainly I just find it much easier to keep track of my mesh without the added layer of complexity that vert/edge weights bring to the party.

It all depends on how dense you want your viewport mesh to be I guess.
Adding edges to get explicit control is easier in someways, but you can end up with a very dense mesh that's a pain in the a*se to edit.
Where as edge and vert weighting can get really great chamfering results on otherwise "low poly" models without turning it into a dense blob.
It's a pity there isn't a spinner to combine the amount of regular smoothing combined with smoothing group subdividing.
On a totally unrelated note, Iain, do you ever get hacked off reading about the Spiderman comic you did models for and reciving no mention what so ever?
I remember a long time ago when those models were previewed on maxforums. I've read a few articles about the comics now and you've never had one mention. Quite annoying.:annoyed:

Nah, in all honesty I couldn't give a shit. It's not like they were my designs in the first place, and my models were only used for initial concept-proofing and promo spots anyway, they never made it into any comics. I did a job and got payed for it, end of story. What did ammuse me was when a mate of mine emailed me a brochure for a 3D resin-printing company that was hawking itself at Siggraph this year, they were using two of the characters I built for Scott as examples :)

Well, looks like I'll be waiting until the end as usual lol. Thanks for the info everyone. Was really hoping for an alternative, but ..oh well. :D

Could try defining creasing with smoothing groups.
