View Full Version : Animal Animation: A tiny sparrow
ivanisavich 04-21-2005, 06:28 PM Well, it being spring here and all...I thought I'd take a break from regular humanoid characters and animate something that I've never tried before.
So...I sat down yesterday and observed some little sparrows fluttering around in some trees. Then I figured that they'd do just fine for subject matter ;)
Long story short....after several hours of toying around, here's the animation I have to show:
http://www.tysonibele.com/Main/Animations/sparrow.avi (1.8mb, DivX...watch it with sound!)
***EDIT***...here's a "fixed" version, which features a more rigid branch, and some tweaking of othe things :D
http://www.tysonibele.com/Main/Animations/sparrow_fix.avi (1.8mb, DivX)
***
http://www.theonlyt.com/Main/Animations/sparrow.jpg
Everything (from modelling, to texturing, to animation, etc) was done in 1 day. It was rendered with the Scanline Max renderer, and sound effects were added (as usual) in Adobe Premiere.
Lemme know what you think!

um. Wow, that simply freakin' rocks.
Wow. Again, incredible. A few hours??? Having bred finches and watched birds a LOT, you simply have captured this one perfectly.
The ONLY crit I can come up with is that he seems to have a little too much weight when he lands, and judging by his speed, his velocity can't quite match how far the branch goes down- but that's pushing crits to the most outer limits.
Thanks for sharing that.
Edit: Oh, hey you did that peanut butter blob lego dance anim too, eh? That was hilarious to me- I wanted to see more of that!

I dont believe it. Just modeling it and getting the feathers and fur and everything textured would take at least a day, not to mention rigging and rendering an lighting and...........
If so, then you are very fast at what you do.

Surprisingly enough...tweaking the fur on the underbellow took longer than all of the animation :P
Overall it's just a really simple scene....a couple of tweaked splines for the branches (which were deformed with bones)....a low-detail edit-meshed box for the bird's body (covered in fur)....a bunch of textured planes for the wing feathers (which were rigged using 2 bones and weighted orientation constraints so that the wing would open up like a fan)....a couple of bones to deform the bird's body...a couple of spheres for the eyes....a couple of deformed planes for the beak....about a dozen lights....and finally, a little animation to tie it all together.

Pretty cool. The branches are way too rubbery especially for ones that short. I would suggest making the whole of the branch move as opposed to such great movement in the one he lands on. A bird that small weighs almost nothing. The fast snaps are great with the feathers, but I think the head moves a bit too slow. Sparrows are like lightning in every move they make. I think the bird looks to weighty on the take off also.
Super animation man. Very well done.

04-23-2005, 09:46 AM
cool dood
Very Very Close to fooling me, In the right context, entirely believable.
(It was the neck/head) Theres a bird almost exactly like this outside my window, Frequently I watch him. It has even faster movement with stronger holds. Very still holds. If you turned ONE of your poses at the end into a hold, (but keep your textured timing) you would have had me entirely convinced, the wings are impecible, the motion on the branch very very cool. This motion would help keep the scene alive with pwerful still holds.
Ps You got me skeptical: One Day ........ seriously now ..........
ivanisavich
04-23-2005, 04:35 PM
Hi c_Hotchkiss,
Thank you for your critique. I believe that in my animation, each head "twitch" happens over only 2 or 3 frames (so I could get that snap)...but I guess (as some of you have suggested), if I dropped the number of transitional frames to none, it would help to simulate the "snap" even better.
Thanks again for your comments everyone! :)

Alrighty...here's some stuff that might help to see how the animation was made...
Shaded view of sparrow model:

Shaded+wireframe:

Animation playblast (600k, right-click "save target as") (http://www.theonlyt.com/Main/Animations/Sparrow/sp_playblast.mpg)
Hope that helps!
Btw...according to the creation and modification dates on the .max files, it took almost exactly 13.5 hours to make, from start to finish. I started at 1:00pm in the afternoon, and finished at 2:30am at night.

Gotta post again: this freakin blows me away. It is such fine animation, just looks so real and full of character- like the little bird is actually *thinking!*
Guy can animate the thoughts in bird brains.... what next?
webhead
04-23-2005, 10:22 PM
I think I just wet myself! So young, so fast -- so maddening!! Great work, really. The movement was so natural and life-like. A couple questions if I may, young whipper-snapper:
What software?
How long have you been using it?
Where/who/how did you learn to animate/model?
sula_nebouxi
04-23-2005, 10:38 PM
Very impressive :)
But yeah, I was going to say that the head movements don't quite have that "snap" that you see in birds, but that's already been posted heh. It's great how you incorporated all the little movements that birds make too. That little tail shake was nicely done. Anyways, well done. :)

Tyson, great work! Judged the amount of detail needed for the scene down to a 't'. Animation seems pretty darn good to me, can't see any flaws - did you rotoscope this? Its very real...

Howdy, howdy, howdy
Dearmad: Hey man...thanks for all your comments! Very encouraging to say the least. I'm thinking of doing a squirrel next. Possibly some other garden creatures too...like a spider....maybe a chipmunk....I probably won't get any of those done in 1 day...but they'll all be pretty good practice.
webhead: Hey man. The software was 3d Studio Max 7 (scanline renderer)...I've been using it for about 4 years now, and I'm completely self-taught. Because I've recieved no formal training whatsoever (there's really not a whole lot offered in my area), I have been able to get where I am by playing around and making good use of the user manual :D
mattmos: Hey buddy...thanks for habitually replying to all of the animations I post here at cgtalk  ...I respect you a lot and admire your work! As for the anim...no...no rotoskoping or video referencing at all. As mentioned, I did about 20 minutes of outdoor visual observation (and a little bit of notetaking), before heading inside and modelling/animating for the rest of the day.
Thanks for all your support!

Tips?
Well....number 1 is always to remember to observe the world around you. How can a painter paint the world around him when he is wearing a blindfold? The same is true for animation...look at how things work and move in real life, before trying to animate them.

Hey Varsha...sorry man...I've never used Maya before. But if you can link an object's orientation to several other object's orientations (and use weights to determine how much influence each parent object has on the child's rotation)...then you're set ;)

WORLD, you better watch out, a new Directing Animator is born !!! Seriously if you animate like this at 18, I'd venture to say that if you keep this up for the rest of your life, you'll certenly reach a level of mastery, only a handful of people ever accomplished in the world of animation.
Good luck and keep us inspired.
Any chance of seeing a screen of the rig? I'm really interested in how you rigged the wings in particular. Nice work

Thats amazing.
Do u work at this level of intensity everyday.
I rarely comment on front page work, but this is really nice. Very simple and very well executed. Compares nicely to all these "sketch of the weeks" we see on the front. Goes to show how much a simple real life animation can be successful.
For the longest time I wanted to do a bird pecking around at food on the ground and flying away, but never got around to it. You really nailed it quite nicely.
I am not a fan of the blurred background. It doesn't really fit in terms of colors and is VERY blurred.

THANK YOU FOR THE PLUG! That just made my day :)
Hey Optimus: Well I'm not in highschool anymore ;)...just finished my first year of college...but still young I guess!
Hey AJ: Well....not a huge amount of money yet....haven't gotten enough work yet to be able to say that I'm an experience freelancer and be able to charge what I want...(future employers: please don't read this next sentence)...The day will come though...boy will it come! :D Haha...jokes.
Hi YoYoYohan: Been doing 3d for about 4 years...but in the early years it was very on/off...so I'd say (taking into consideration some long breaks I took) about 3.
As for the branch: Thank you for your critiques! I agree that it does look very rubbery...and I'll probably go back and fix that some day...not yet though...13.5 hours in a row was enough for me to work on that scene for the next LONG while...haha...
Anyways...once again, I'm honoured that I've been plugged, and really appreciate everyone taking the time to comment!
*edit*: as for the blurry background...well.....I did that mainly to save me the hassle of having to model a background....the focus was animation so I wasn't too worried about what was happening behind the bird :)

I guess that, no matter what they all say, you just can't buy talent.... Keep up the hard work....
I agree entirely.
Major, major respect.
Also you web site is a must see as well. The animations actually had me laughing ( something that I rarely do for an animation. )

hehe yeah i agree with franklyn not to let all of this praise get to your head. But man you've got talent. I've visited your site and i love all the animation you got there. What i've noticed is that most of the stuff you do is physical animation. Thought of doing more acting stuff? That freedom clip had some nice acting...would love to see more man!
Did you use character studio or did you rig the chars on your own?

Dude,
Im sure there are bunch of us who want to know exactly HOW you did all of that in one day.
Perhaps, if you had the time, you could put togethor a tutorial in how to make this project, as im sure there are dozens of us who are curious to know what your workflow is like.
Maybe even CGTALK could feature it, but i guess you'd have to talk to one of the admins about that.
The fact that you did this all in one day makes it even more unbelievable.
ivanisavich
05-03-2005, 01:55 AM
Hi adren@line,
That's definitely an idea...as I've noticed that a lot of people have wanted to know how I did it.
But I think a tutorial (even if it were in-depth) would be a bit disappointing. There was no magical technique put into practice...and the scene was actually really easy to setup.
As you can see from my previous posts, the model was ridiculously simple, and the rig was simple as well (even the wing rig, which only took about 20 minutes to set up from scratch...starting from trial-and-error, having never tried anything like that before).
The animation was also really simple. I didn't block it out or do thumbnails or storyboards or pre-planning. I just sat down, and animated it from start to finish, adding secondary motion as I went along.
Also, the lighting setup was super easy too. Just a few omnis and Max's standard Scanline renderer.
Finally, the scene setup was about as basic as it gets too. Just a couple of splines (turned into editable meshes and tweaked for roughness, then rigged with a few bones), and a blurred map in the background. No DOF was used, I simply applied a "blur" render effect to the twigs in the foreground to give the illusion of depth and scale.
All in all, the animation consists only of some very fundamental principles put into practice, and is something that anyone with a basic sense of weight and timing could do.
:)

Truely amazing man. Not only the quality of everything but also the fact you made it in one day. My only crit would be that the branch he takes off from seems a bit too rubbery, but that's just me being pedantic. Great work! :applause:

Holy crap I think I just shat myself. One freakin day!! Is this for real an 18 yr. old did this.........NO FREAKIN WAY! And that's coming from someone who works in the business. So you say you are in college.....how can they teach you anything? If you keep this pace up by the time you graduate you should not just be an animator, (even if it is Pixar), you should go for the gold baby........director (or start your own animation company)! The scary thing is your website has animations that actually made me laugh!........that almost never happens. I hope you stay humble, however, but geesh your website is sick........at 18!

Let me start off by saying, excellent work. Very very nice. I am thoroughly impressed. Ok then... the branch. Looks like it's made of rubber. The branch should bend a little but mostly from that angle it will bounce from the bottom to the top of the frame without so much play in the shorter branches. When the bird takes off, he has a little hang before he leave the branch. I've noticed that those type of birds, and small birds in general (with the exception of maybe humming birds) tend to pitch themselves forward off of the branch and leap, opening the wings shortly after take off. I am sure there is more, but these are the ones that stood out immediately. Great work. You have a promising future. =)

Haha...well...funny thing is, I'm not actually going to school for animation! I just finished a year of Bible college, and am waiting for Ryerson University to send out their admissions for their film course.
Turns out that my 2d portfolio (which basically consists of nothing) isn't strong enough to get me into any traditional animation courses around here (Sheridan's, for example), and I can't afford to ship myself off to another country for expensive 3d animation courses (there aren't really any around here)....so it looks like I'm either going to be studying film and doing 3d as a hobby (don't get me wrong...I still LOVE 3d and animation), or will be working for a year and continuing my 3d hobby (if I don't get accepted).
Anyways...that's my life story ;) Haha...wish me luck with my acceptances!

Hey Tyson,
Going to an animation school will definitely be great, you'll learn the foundations and fundamentals and i have no doubt you'll be one of the top students in your course. But if for some weird x-files reason you don't get accepted (God forbid) I think you'll still have no problems getting a job in this industry. A lot of ppl have the education and yrs of experience and still wouldn't be able to do what you do. Trust yourself man, you can even start sending your cv and portfolio to big studios, you'll get their attention.

Dont get me wrong Sheridan is a fine school.....buttttttt.....you could teach all the courses there in 3D. In fact, I showed your work to the head animation director here and he nearly flipped his lid. If they dont accept you they should be condemned for stupidity. hahahahahaha As well, with your eyes of focus you could learn the 2D skills pretty quickly I would think. Why dont you take a few figure, sculpture or painting courses at the local college and build up your 2D portfolio. You might look around for scholarship oppurtunities. I think what's so phenomenal about your work is your quality in all areas of 3D is strong. Many times we see great modelers and texture artists that have no animation skills and vice versa. You have both......rare indeed. In fact, I would be willing to gamble that it's the first 3D piece that could merit front page as a still or animation.

YOU see almost everything...
Very well trained eyes you have. It's almost perfect which NEVER happens with CG.... Even the high-dollar stuff! The only thing wrong with it is the branches do look too "rubbery" when they are effected by the bird's weight release. Also the bird's last little neck movments before he flies off... For some reason that ques my eye as duplicated... Maybe just one direction/one twitch but his head does kinda a "double-take" with one direction. Its like the birds checking something out before he flies off but it does'nt translate well. Maybe more of a little pause before he flights off?
Dude I'm really impressed and I'm gonna add some more layers to my animation tonight. Thanks for the "inspiration."

But there is something, I am a very anoying person in animation... the bird head should move a lil bit faster I think so, there is something slow on the timming there and I can't really see it, just feel, I keep watching birds all the time, altough you made the movement perfect, did u use a reference?

Your stuff made me severly depressed all of yesterday.
But now ... i'm back . This time with questions :
I notice every animation that you have done has music that is perfect for the piece.
Where do you get your sound clips from ?
( It would have taken me a full 14 hours just to find music.)
Where do you get your humour from ?
( Do you brainstorm with other people, or do you just have a 'gift' of comedy as well ? )
Are you exceptionally smart ? ( Photographic memory, ... that sort of thing )
( C'mon ...I need an excuse )
You say you just learned the program on your own without schooling. Did you team up with friends to learn the program or did you just 'absorb' it on your own ?
You had a lot of encouragement as a kid didn't you ( wait a minute ... you still are a kid :scream: )

Hi Vegan,
Where do you get your sound clips from ?
My music, I mostly take from a Royalty Free Music cd I have. It's really handy for times like this (when I have a short animation that needs music) because it's got hundreds of different songs for every occasion :)
Where do you get your humour from ?
Humour? ;)
Are you exceptionally smart ?
Hahaha! Far from it! I just love 3d, so I work at it with a passion. But...my room is always messy, I don't wear a pocket protector, and I don't know all 57 (? ;)) states...so I'm definitely not "exceptionally smart"!
Did you team up with friends to learn the program or did you just 'absorb' it on your own

Ok...here's a bit of a re-worked version.
As you can see, the branch is much more rigid now, the highlight on the eye is a bit sharper, and a couple of the head twitches have been compressed by a few frames.

on second look i found somthing to crit (from your updated version) right before the bird takes off it moves its head down and to its left. i think to much of the body moves with it, i might be wrong but birds make a similar motion which isnt quite what you have. i think if the head rotated rather than moved it would seem more natural. when they look at something below they crank there neck rather than resituating the body to compensate. just a thought.

Hi NicNac,
The branches are splines which were then converted to editable meshes.
Once they were meshes, I tweaked their shape and added a noise modifier to them, to give them a bit of roughness.
Finally, I applied a texture to them which included bump and displacement. I had to give the branches a few extra smooth iterations with Meshsmooth, so that the detail from the displacement map would be (somewhat) visible (since I wasn't using any fancy micro-triangle displacement system).
FINALLY, I also scattered some green objects (small spheres, with only a few primitive segments, which were then given a noise modifier) over the branches, to give the illusion of fungus/tiny-leaves (using the "Scatter" compound object).
That's about it ;)
amazing work nice texturing

Wonderful theme! :bounce: You really captured the motion. Not meaning that I think you used MOCAP:D The bit where the bird lands and folds it's feathers is so realistic. They do it so quickly that you can't really see it happening, I don't know how you did it! My only criticism is that the last head movements before he takes off are a bit slow, not quite as snappy as I'd expect a real bird to be. The take off is amazing. The oily appearance of the feathers is perfect. And all done in one day with scanline rendering? Unbelievable!!!

Its just amazing how exactly you got the details in movement and timing! Congrats, really impressive!
Really, really impressive!
I'm a bit of a bird nut, and you really nailed the behavior and motion. The only crit I have, and it's a minor one, is that the takeoff is a bit too slow - we have a bird feeder in our livingroom window, and I'm always amazed how instantaneous the takeoff is. They are there, and then they're gone - literally "blink and you miss it" stuff.
Overall though, a really fine piece of work, and the fact that you did it in a day tells me everything I need to know about why I gave up animation about 18 months ago :)

Very nice work.
As I was running it a couple of times to watch it, the family cat jumped up on the chair to take a look. Seems like maybe you fooled him too. :)

Amazing animation man. It really blows me away that you're 18 and you did all that in one day. On the other hand there's me who's 17 and not even close to your talent. I gotta get cracking.
ok, show the bird with mocap suit :P

man when it first saw this i thought 1 day yeah right! this guy has to be joking. but now that i see how you did it! I definatly beleave ya. i think the thing i like the best is the fact that you have come up with something really simple but its executed so well that its concincing. man that a good skill to have. the animation looks fine. makes me want to get back into doing more winged creatures.
i wish i could say some of my work was done in a day!
any more birds on the way? bird are somthing i reall want ot get to do more as they are a nice challanging rigging exersize. i used the same oriention constarints method on one of my projects.
well done:thumbsup:
cheers

It takes a veteran to complete this short in a day with high quality modeling and texturing plus a realistic animation so it is no surprise that this is a masterpiece. Excellent work!
I went to your website and I am surprised that you are just 18 years old with no formal education or training in 3D animation/visual effects, a self-starter. Good enough to produce a remarkable work like this and especially the short film The Beast Within, (though the directing needs some improvement but high score for its 3D/effects)! Salutations! I highly recommend that you pursue this passion in a school like Vancouver Film School, Academy of Arts University, San Franscisco, etc. for example. I see you having no problem getting even a 3D intern/job between classes then. I also welcome more 3D learning resources at your site. You are certainly on your way to become another Carlos Baena and other greats to work even in ILM or Pixar!

You are using very well reference videos.
I see a combination between rotoscoping and keying. Very good action/reaction on landiing, and wing movement. Some issues with head movement.
In overall very good work.

Hi herbert,
No rotoscoping or video references were used. All of the animation came right out of my head ;)

I somehow could'nt tell if its a CG Animation or normal video recording. Could you please mention few pointers for wings/feather setup. It looks very natural and also how you did the rig which works pretty well.

Well, it being spring here and all...I thought I'd take a break from regular humanoid characters and animate something that I've never tried before.
So...I sat down yesterday and observed some little sparrows fluttering around in some trees. Then I figured that they'd do just fine for subject matter ;)
Long story short....after several hours of toying around, here's the animation I have to show:
http://www.theonlyt.com/Main/Animations/sparrow.avi (1.8mb, DivX...watch it with sound!)
***EDIT***...here's a "fixed" version, which features a more rigid branch, and some tweaking of othe things :D
http://www.theonlyt.com/Main/Animations/sparrow_fix.avi (1.8mb, DivX)
***

Everything (from modelling, to texturing, to animation, etc) was done in 1 day. It was rendered with the Scanline Max renderer, and sound effects were added (as usual) in Adobe Premiere.
Lemme know what you think!
:applause:
Your truely gifted. Awsome realism. Can't wait to see what is next.

fantastic motion! So realisitc it looks as if you had a sparrow cooperate and wear little avian mo-cap suit for you. Very Impressive!

Very very good work indeed.
Are you applying to Ryerson in Toronto? They do have a very good film program.

Hi israelyang,
Although I applied to both York and Ryerson this year (got accepted to York for film, but was declined by Ryerson), I took a job here in Minneapolis (before I recieved my York acceptance) instead ;)

All I can say is well done.
every thread you post just makes it more amazing to me...(one day,no planning, rig in 20 minutes and straight ahead?!)
the only question I have left is do you have any tips for improving the sharpness of someone's observational skills?
ivanisavich
09-09-2005, 07:05 PM
Hi norman....here's a good thing to do when observing things (particularly animals).....watch each part of it (or whatever it is) separately as it moves, and note how/why the part moves the way it does.
So for example, for my bird animation...I went outside and checked out some sparrows and watched how their tail feathers moved, then how their heads moved, then how their wings moved etc etc....concentrating on each part separately and individually. My sparrow animation is far from being totally realistic.....but doing that type of observation made it that much better than it probably would have been otherwise.
Hope that helps :)

Cool! Thanks :)
This sparrow clip should be your only demo reel needed to apply to major top-notch studios. Work for a while to save up and gain experience as well as improve on your drawings to go to any great CG school you want. All the best! :)
This is on my PSP now
Thanks for the animation!

so your saying its not rotoscop? am find this hard to belive, either way its brilliant.

No it's not rotoscoped. No video refs either. Just a bit of observation and my memory :)

(sorry to revive an oldie, but I just stumbled on this awesome piece)
Animation, texturing and lighting is all perfect and amazing.
A crit though, is the rendering of the textures - I see a lot of flickering, propably due to sampling problems, which makes the bird and the branches look CG. I'm no Maya user, but In Max I would solve the problem by turning on supersampling.
Cheers,
- Jonas

Hey Jonas, thanks for dropping by!
Yeah....supersampling and turning up the shadow map size would definitely have helped with that....good point :)

i must tell u man, blown away! i was not expecting that kind of beauty because i don't look at animations much, but great motion, detail and atmosphere (love that tune) only crit: the eye of the bird doesn't look as detailed as the rest of it's body, more shiny and a tad metallic, but other than that nit-pick, great piece of work!
