View Full Version : 2D Cartoons Only!
rharpe 10-03-2002, 06:28 PM Is there a place here or anywhere on the web where people only design 2D/cartoon images? I like 3D art but tend to lean toward vector or limited colored cartoons.
Web urls, threads, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
I love these various styles:
1. Don Bluth's: Dragon's Lair, Space Ace :buttrock:
2. Lucas Arts games: Day of the Tentacle, Sam n Max, and Full Throttle
3. Walt Disney
4. Christopher Hart
5. Caricatures :bounce:
Thanks in advance.

flashkit.com is where alot of people who use 2d and flash go.
Tell them Exiled Archangel sent you :airguitar
Yeah, you can post that type of work here. Our own forum moderator jeroentje has been showing off his illustrator stuff here for a while now. I'd love to see more 2D cell shaded cartoons and the like here. Detailed and textured paintings are great, but you have to admire the ability to display form and action using simple lines and solid colors.
Welcome to the forum, and post some work!

animationnation.com and shaneglines site (posted above) are great.
Can't believe yougive lucas Arts credit for Sam n Max. Al they did was make a game based on a catoon.
Great Goooggly Moooggly ... the pop-ups on ShaneGlines won't stop. Make them go away please!!!
Looked like a good forum for artists, but the pop-up ads really ruined it for me. CGTalk and EatPoo are still my favorites. :D

Thank you all for directing me to these very informative links. EatPoo.com reminds me of an airbrush style, detailed yet very cool. ShaneGlines really likes the designy-look. This is almost exactly what I'm looking to mimic. If any of you remember those old magazine ads back in the 40's and 50's... that is a style I have loved ever since I was a kid growing up in the 80's.
Keep the links coming! I'm sure I'm not the only one that loves 2D art.
Thanks again and take care.

Thats what we love aobut shane glines, Yes Kirt is right waaaaay to many pop ups, but thats only because shane refuses to to start chargng, or move to another forums. His persistent in an almost annoying way but very talented smart guy who can really draw. Not that people here can't, thats why I come here too, and more often just because there aren't pop up adds.

What does everyone think of the Disney's "Hercules" style? At first I didn't like the sharp corners and twisty chins, and joints... but now that I look at it over and over again, I think I like it alot!
This style to me is very designy! And it does grow on you after a very short while. (Easier to animate too.)
Day of the Tentacle and Sam n Max have that style as well... in my opinion, this is truly some great work.
I got a glimpse of the new "Kim Impossible", very promising indeed. I just wish I had cable to tape all the episodes. Another great style would be Johnny Bravo.
Any others you all like or would advise to see?

YEah I didn't like hercules at first, but when I started learning effects animation and colour theory at school, I watched this film and saw it in a new light. Outside of some of the God scenes The color in this movie is astounding and the way they stylised the effects incredible. Same with Mulan, two best movies for classical effects animation. Shows how you can really stylise effects and still have them believable. Intersting graphic style, wasn't too fond of it at first either but it does grow on you, and they did a great job when you look at what they were aiming for which was a style similar to the old greek urns and architecture and such.
Haven't seen a single piece of animation of Kim yet, don't find time to watch TV much anymore and have no clue when its on in canada. WOuld love tosee it, a lot of classical animators are really into it in Vancouver here. Al my teachers keep asking if I've seen it yet (we trade aniated shorts and such a lot) and unfortunately none of them will tape it for me :(
